Though if you're like me, and keep most of the shows and movies you want to watch on your PC, then you can just stream them to the Wii U with Plex or something similar.
I don't see why everyone is against a Nintendo console being able to play movies. That would just be another thing to attract people to the consoles, and if you haven't noticed, if just gamers buy a console, you're not going to make much of a profit.
Nope. No idea why either. It's not like it costs much to put in.
Nintendo don't want to pay royalties to the dvd and blu ray consortiums.
It wasn't so much that but the fact that it's another anti piracy tactic by Nintendo. Also another reason they did that was to keep the cost of the Wii U down.

As gamers, we have no interest in encouraging people to buy a game console to watch movies. It doesn't benefit anyone.
Again, alternative standalone players are so cheap (and energy efficient--watching BluRays on PS3/4 uses 4x as much electricity). Honestly, you're better wearing out the disc drive in one of those than your console. And any increase in install base is hardly worthwhile because most people who base their decision on the multimedia abilities of a game platform aren't going to be amassing a large library of games.
We love our consoles and hate the idea of pimping them out.

Because we got like...hold on. counts about 5 or 6 DVD players in this house already, including the PCs...so, yeah....Wii U playing movies is...kinda pointless.

The more pointless crap that's added on to the Wii U, the more expensive...it may not be much...but the Wii U were to have a DVD/Blu-Ray player, streaming service, 200 TB internal storage, toaster oven, soda machine dispenser, and stuff I can't think about, imagine the price.

let's add a vacuum cleaner, a car mode, an inbuilt screen, an escalator and wings to make it more attractive at mere $9,999,999.00 still cheaper than a bike(get the reference?)

Yeah, OK. I have a cheap BluRay player in every room. I guess it would be better to burn out my Wii U disc drive while watching movies, huh? And Netflix is a waste of life. (Despite it being pretty awesome on the GamePad.)
I've never watched movies on any console and my launch PS2 and PS3 still purr like kittens. I have numerous friends who do otherwise and all have burned through numerous PS2s and PS3s. It is not advisable if you intend to take care of your systems and keep them running for many fruitful years.
I'm a game collector and I never, ever trade in games or hardware. I want this stuff to last.
Wiiu should have played dvd discs because some people prefer to watch films only.
Youtube is free and is the best source for video streaming and has everything from English,Jap movies, religious programs,education/study videos you won't get all of that material in love film and netflix also there aren't many good films for my liking and they charging for them programs, don't bother with netflix or lovefilm,go for youtube is the best source for any kind of videos.
Youtube plays really well in wiiu, can be used as app or through browser which video gets displayed on tv and still can browse on gamepad.
We don't need DVD or blu-ray movies!!, we don't need third party games!!, we don't want a fast and multi-tasking OS!!, and we don't want to dish out a few bucks for a vastly superior online setup / infrastructure!!
Actually, if your able to afford a Wii U, you should already have a DVD player if not blue ray player. I don't understand people's need fie having more then one media device to play videos hooked to the same TV in order to satisfy them. You can pick a blue ray player for well under 100 bucks nowadays and if your TV is that old, people are practically giving dvd players away now. You should not have any excuse to not be able to enjoy your dvd.
I don't get this - it's 2014 and DVD players have been out for +15 years. Chances are every average family in the first world already has a DVD player at home or a machine such as a PC that can play DVDs. What's the bloody point in putting a DVD player inside a WiiU?!
When it comes to these kind of bonus features, you have to give people something they probably don't have yet and can become a good selling point for your console (like PS2 had dvd in 2000 and PS3 had blue ray in 2006), otherwise you just keep the costs up for something people already have in much better quality.
Anyway, if WiiU had some kind of DVD/BR player, there would be 1.000 threads on these boards saying that Nintendo is so stupid because they could have sold the machine for a lower price and had a better launch if they didn't put a bloody media player everybody already has.
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

I don't really understand this mentality. "Thank God the Wii U has doesn't have features that consoles have had for years"?
Yeah DVDs are stupid and obsolete and I don't want it to play them. I don't want it to play VHS or betamax either. I don't want to have devices that play useless stuff.
