Topic: Buying a Wii U... CoD: Black Ops II or Ghosts?

After having both a PS4 and Xbox One, I decided that, while the former was a great console, neither were my cup of tea. Most of my friends in the area don't have either and have a WiiU instead and after playing some at my friends house and some new E3 trailers (Splatoon looks amazingly fun), I decided to go buy one within the next week. (Along with the obvious Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and Smash.)
One thing I will miss however are first person shooters. I love call of duty. Its fast paced and fits my play style more than other shooters, but without Advanced Warfare on WiiU (Which was definitely a fun time) I'm not sure which one to buy. Here's how I compare them.

Black Ops II: Favorite CoD of all time. Older so probably lower player count online.
Ghosts: I liked ghosts almost as much as Black Ops II. Newer so possibly higher player count.

Do any Call of Duty players on WiiU have any (Non-biased to ghosts being your least favorite game ever made... seem to get that a lot) information about this? I'm fine with either game but I much prefer the one with higher player count for obvious reasons.

I think there's still a small online community for Black Ops 2 on Wii U. Don't think I could say the same for Ghosts though. BO2 seems to be the go-to game for FPS fans on Wii U. It sold more, it was a better game, and it has a good reputation among Wii U owners.

Also, Nintendo is releasing Wii games on the Wii U eShop now (one new game per week), and next Thursday happens to be Metroid Prime Trilogy, and at a half price promotional of just $9.99 ( that's like $3 per game!). I know it's not competitive FPS, heck it's not even FPS at all... It's FPA with some shooting, combat and puzzle exploration. But if you haven't played it I can personally assure you it's one of the greatest video games of all time. And being in first person I'm sure you would slide right into it no problem.

What I meant by the post was an online competitive shooter (though I play for fun, not for competition). Though I did play Metroid Prime on Gamecube and it was alright. Thanks for the response, good to know Blacks Ops 2's "Definitive Version" is still going a bit, though others are welcome to provide more input on how the communities are faring.

Black Ops II and Ghosts actually have around the same player count(1800-2200) the last time I played, which was 4-5 months ago or so. Ghosts has more custom options and extinction mode, while Black Ops II has zombie mode and generally more popular online for hardcore matches. The hardcore players on Ghosts is pretty low; like 32 players online low, while Black Ops II always has hardcore matches. Then, there are obviously different maps.

I prefer Ghosts, with zombie mode being the thing I like the most about that Black Ops II game.

I think you should go for ghosts, which I am currently playing and lots of players online no matter what time it is no problem finding matches.

I tried yesterday to play Black Ops 2 and am having difficulty getting into a game, maybe cause I'm in Europe but the player count was just under 2K, before yesterday I wasn't having any issues getting a game. Nobody plays kill confirmed on it but all other modes seem to be fairly active (from the player count atleast). And if you hated the target finder in the other versions you'll be just as annoyed here

@Solomore A few warnings:

  • Unlike every other version of Black Ops 2 and Ghosts, you can only get the Wii U version physically (no digital download on the eshop).
  • The only DLC available is the preorder map in each (Nuketown 2025 and Free Fall)

From my experience, both games are very hard to find on Wii U so you may end up having your choice decided by what you can find.

Im aware of these issues, as I always kept tabs on the WiiU versions for comparison. The rarity of the games may make things difficult. I may go ahead and buy ghosts though, since even if i cant find decent online matches i can still play squads for XP. I liked ghosts default maps and free fall was an excuse for me to get out my shotty.

Thanks again all

I have Black Ops 2 but I don't do online multiplayer.

The game's fairly good although I think Call of Duty has lost a bit of its quality in the last decade. I'd probably say it's the best FPS on the Wii U though.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.
