Now if this article is anything to go by, I believe we will finally get to see all those Japanese games we've been missing localized (plus brand new games that haven't come out yet). Now I'm not to certain if it means for both the Wii U and 3DS but seeing as NIntendo is merging their handheld and home console departments it will probably mean Japanese games for both will be coming. What does anyone else think? Are you happy at the prospect of more Japanese games being localized?

I think this Bravely Default has a very good chance of coming over now, Square-Enix is probably just waiting to get the green light from Nintendo. (That sounds weird when I say it out loud)

Lol. SE doesn't need Nintendo's permission to localise games.
I dunno about whether Nintendo's statements include SE specifically. Not when SE might well release the games Nintenedo provided money to localise on the iPad later on.
I have no proof or anything, but my guess is the relationship between SE and Nintendo would be frosty ATM.

Their relationship has been frosty since the mid 90's. That quote of mine didn't really convey what I was trying to say (it still sounds weird when I say it aloud) but I believe you got the gist of it.

It sounds weird because 'greenlight' is a synonym for 'obtain permission,' and it doesn't apply when talking about the relationship between two very large corporations.
Nintendo had made some good ground with the partnership with SE. The two had partnered on a couple of games (Mario Sports Mix, Fortune Street, Dragon Quest Wars) - I can't think of many other times Nintendo has allowed a rival publisher use its characters.
But the basic reality is that SE is building up a mobile business, and that's going to directly affect Nintendo's handheld business. How seriously Nintendo takes that depends on how seriously Nintendo is worried about mobile gaming (as in, in board room discussions. We all know the official marketing line is to pretend it's not a problem).
If Nintendo is legitimately unconcerned with mobile gaming I would expect Nintendo will help fund SE localisation projects.
@Bankai For what it's worth, the localizations of some of Square Enix's games on the 3DS would help raise the value of the 3DS itself in regards to its game library. There'd be a pretty good short-term profit if Nintendo helped bring Bravely Default over if Square Enix didn't feel like it. Additionally, although SE is definitely supporting the mobile space more so than nearly any large publisher out there, they're still putting stuff out on 3DS, so I doubt SE would simply use all the money off of the profits towards mobile game making and just stop making games for Nintendo's systems. It just doesn't make much sense for them to let go of anything else that would make them lots of money, and their investments in Nintendo's portable systems have proved profitable in the past and present, particularly when Japan is concerned.

Increased effort in localisation generally would seem to be a good idea to ensure a steady supply of software - especially if Western publishers like Activision and EA don't favour Wii U with their big titles. Frankly I know which games I'd rather see...
@Bankai
hey, waltz: i re-activated my account to ask you something, lol. do you think there's a decent chance that Level 5 will bring Fantasy LIfe to the west? can't seem to find much info about the company, their relationship to ninty etc.

thanks much.
Almost every Level-5 game has been localised to the West at some point. Thing is though they tend to do it through third party publishers. Sony localised White Knight Chronicles, Namco Bandai localised Ni No Kuni.
Level-5 doesn't have much of a relationship with Nintendo though.
So the long and short answer is if Level-5 can find a publisher, it'll happen. Or perhaps Level-5 will localise through its own American office now. Who knows?
Hey guys, I really want to try to get Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland and Dragon Quest Monsters: Iru and Luca's Wonderful Mysterious Keys to be released in the West so I made a petition on change.org and I'm hoping that some of you will sign it. Thank you!
