Topic: Brand New Wii U Keeps Freezing Upon Initial Setup

My boyfriend and I got the Nintendo Wii U 32GB Console Premium Bundle + Splatoon yesterday. We were really excited to set everything up and get playing--but the system wouldn't let us go past the "Set Time" screen. We rebooted everything, went through the same settings until we reached the "Set Time" screen before it froze again. After several tries, we gave up.

I've seen a lot of people having problems with their Wii U freezing, but I've never come across stories about it freezing during the first set-up. Are we the only one here? I've tried again today, but no luck. It keeps freezing at the same point.

I really don't know what to do. We were really looking forward to it, it cost a lot of money, and now this. There's also no way of telling whether it's the Wii U console itself that causes the problem, or the gamepad. We're probably going to return it to the shop and ask for a new Wii U, but it really really sucks.

Yeah, this really sucks but the shop will give you a new WiiU without any problems.

But what is the problem exactly? You aren't able to set the time? Does the Touchscreen still works in that step?

I feel your frustration.I had a few problems with mine too when I first got it.I had to do the set up 4 or 5 times as it wouldn't complete.I can't remember now why or what I done to resolve it but it was frustrating the life out of me ,then just as everything was finally set up my Gamepad screen went black and stopped working altogether.Lay there for a few days. After some research I found out others had the same problem, turned out many of the 8gb models Gamepad's batteries were not placed right and needed to be re-seated.A simple procedure but one that shouldn't happen. For me it would have been a big problem returning it as I had it sent to Thailand from the UK,luckily I got it working in the end and has worked great ever since. This doesn't really help you but thought I'd share my experience.

This is just the sad reality of the Wii U unfortunately. It's about as stable as a two-legged stool.

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

The touch screen completely freezes whenever I set the current time. I've tried it again twice today, but it doesn't allow me to get past it.
We've called Nintendo about the problem, and they said they're happy to repair it with no extra costs; it's a problem we can't solve ourselves without their help. So I'll bring the Wii U to the post office today, and hope for the best!

Okay, not sure if you've done this already but it's the fix all for most of these issues. Unplug everything from the Wii U so no cables are attached. Unplug the power brick from the wall. Wait 10 minutes. Plug everything back in, I swear your chances of it working will be high. This clears everything out gets it to a factory state. A user speculated that it's actually trying to find a network to update but is displaying the time screen so it's combating between two screens.

Others report the same issue and it went away.

Especially for a fresh out of the box Wii U. Best of luck.

That solution seems wrong on a technical level. It shouldn't be a difference between unplugging it for 10 secs or 10 minutes. If it of course isn't a fabled "factory state" but overheating. And the Wii U is definitively worse in this regard than the Wii. I have noted that the Wii U has a tendency to overheat if it is in an enclosed space. Especially in the summer, when the surrounding air is hotter than usual.

@OP: it seems like you had some bad luck. Just exchange it and it should be fine.

@Therad something is clearly messed up with the setup process and I believe power cycling will put it through a "safe mode" boot and it restarts and initializes the setup. I'm no Nintendo engineer but this is my only guess since the same process helped others with lockups. Even if you power off your console it's never really "off" less you pull the power. Doing this is like doing a hard reset instead of a soft reset.
