Topic: Best looking game on the Wii U?

I'm on the Bayonetta and Mario Kart 8 bandwagon here. Bayonetta 2 is a gorgeous game, especially the first level, when looking at the mountain. The fact that it runs so smoothly is a huge plus.

Mario Kart 8, however, I think takes the cake. That game is so detailed, beautifully rendered, and suffers little to no framerate drops.

Pikmin 3 or Mario Kart 8 for me

Bayonetta 2 and MK8, I agree. Pikmin 3 has some ugly textures that showcase it is one of Nintendo's first HD efforts, same goes with NSMB U.

MK8 looks bad. (No anti aliasing). Jaggies are the one thing I cannot tolerate (Other than sub 60fps framerates).

I guess if you're nitpicking. I've seen the difference between AA and no AA. There's a small difference. It does look better with, than without, but not enough to say much of anything looks bad.

Games being under 60 FPS is much more of a difference. When I played Second Son for PS4, I was literally unable to see a lot of what was happening on screen, because half of what the game should have been running wasn't even showing up on screen(at 30 FPS).

So ya, having the actual frames being there is a lot more important than AA. If a game runs AA at 30 FPS, you're still missing out on that AA being applied to 60 FPS, instead of 30 FPS.

Then someone make a Kickstarter for Scar to get a different TV so that he can see the other half of the game. And presumably every other PS4 game, since Infamous doesn't drop frames any more than the rest.

I have to say though, half the game being visually unavailable is a knock I haven't heard before, so I give credit for creativity.

Keeping this Wii U-focused, MK8 is not a fun game in local 4-player mode, running on 30 fps. The smooth flow of the vehicles disappears. I try to stay away from that mode.

I'd also say that the occasional drops (down to 40 fps according to Digital Foundry) in Bayonetta 2 is disturbing.

This site illustrates the issue quite well:

Scar is probably referring to frame doubling, which occurs on an HDTV when it's feed 30fps....it's all sorts of nasty when panning the camera around. LCD/LED's usually do a better job at hiding since they're already plagued with motion blur/low motion resolution.
I'd take 60fps + 720p Vs 30fps + 1080p any day of the week

Exactly. The graphics are good in that game, no doubt, though.

@AlexSays
It's not about the HDTV I was playing on; at least not entirely. The frame multiplying can add to the annoyance, but it is ultimatey based on the fact that it is running at 30FPS. I think the HDTV I was playing on was 240Hz, which means the screen was displaying each frame 8 times. If someone can see those frames multiplying, it makes it look like you are only seeing a fraction of what is going on in the game. That's why I brought up that I would trade anti-aliasing for frames, because then you physically seeing more frames, instead of more a slightly more detailed 30FPS.

EDIT: Also, alot of games run at 60FPS. It just makes alot less sense when a 30FPS game is being run on a high refresh rate HDTV. They went for visuals over frame rate. The frame multiplying is actually less noticeable on a 60FPS HDTV, which is why I made the decision a long time ago that I shouldn't really bother spending the extra $200+ for a high refresh rate HDTV, when console games never go over 60FPS, while alot are 30FPS.

Personally I think DK:TF is one of the best looking games on the Wii U. Not necessarily because it's technically impressive but more because of the quality of the art involved. Going back now and looking at some videos of it, there's stuff going on in that game that I didn't even notice when I was playing it.

.... also I completely agree on the whole 30fps vs 60fps. That makes a huge impact, Mario Kart 8 four player? Well I wouldn't go as far as it's "not fun" but it's pretty jarring.

I think it's only THAT much of an issue for me when you directly compare them. I think I would stop tolerating Blighttown in Dark Souls if I played it directly after Bayonetta 2.

I'm less annoyed at 30 FPS and more annoyed at people's awful excuses for 30 FPS tbh.

Yeah, I really think you're nitpicking there. I wouldn't have even picked up on that if I hadn't read it elsewhere. I think they do such a good job of covering it up with the lighting. It's harder to see jagged edges when the sky is glowing around them.

For me, I play Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, and MC Collection on a pretty regular basis, which are all 60FPS. I'm like, "Where da frames at?" You know what I'm sayin'?

Given how crazily people are praising and picking up PS4s, you'd figure the 1st party software is amazing and blows everything out of the water, which isn't really the case. That how I feel about it, anyway.

Like I said 30FPS is actually tolerable, for the most part. The HDTVs with 120+Hz just make it way more apparent that you aren't seeing enough frames. It's a shame, too, because I would say that some of the more expensive HDTVs make the picture really stand out, but high refresh rate not being relevant for basically any content, along with a laggy response time(which is usually accommodating said good image quality), is why I don't bother.

OK... I think we can all agree that Nintendo's first party and several third parties look great on the Wii U. However, for those who love Off TV play, which games look best on the GamePad? Probably still MK8.

In my opinion, the two best graphics games on Wii U are:

Mass Effect 3
Assasins Creed IV: Black Flag

Also, Need for Speed Most Wanted is very pretty, even if you crash your car and look backwards (the shattered windshield shows the reflection in evey piece of glass)

I played on a 120 Hz HDTV. There was never a point in which half of the game was visually absent because of fps. Nor have I ever seen this in any video of someone else playing. Nor have I heard of anyone else having that problem in any professional or user review.

Like I said though, points for creativity.

Just because you or others are unable to see it, doesn't mean that I'm making it up. It's fact that there is literally half the visual data in 30FPS, compared to 60FPS. There is no debate.

AlexSays wrote:

Points for creativity are unnecessary, because I didn't make it up. I'm not saying PS4 is horrible, either, just that their games look very unimpressive on a high Hz rate HDTV, largely because it is 30FPS. Sony made graphic fidelity a priority, and that's about it, but you are missing 30FPS all the while.
