Topic: Best LAN adapter for WiiU?

Posts 1 to 20 of 30

I just want to play Smash online with less lag... Apparently, if you use a USB lan adapter it's much better. Unfortunately, Nintendo no longer sells their official ones, I could get a used one but I'm not really a fan of preowned products. I found these two:

eForCity USB 2.0 Lan Adapter
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/eforcity-usb-10-100mbps-ethernet-...

Monochrome USB Lan Adapter
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/monoprice-usb-2-0-ethernet-adapte...

The eForCity one is recommended in a gaming site but there's a Youtube video that shows the functionality of the Monochrome adapter. Personally, I prefer the Monochrome one in terms of looks, but I want to hear opinions/experiences.

AFAIK, both NoE and NoA still sells the official LAN adapter.

Lan = ethernet cable correct?

Yes, that information can be found on google in about ten seconds.

Not necessarily. Type in LAN adapter, and you get a bunch of LAN adapter listings that don't mention Ethernet. Type in "What is a LAN Adapter," and it may take you a while, as whenever it says Ethernet, it does not necessarily imply that they are the same thing, until maybe you do a little more reading. It's much more direct just to ask questions. You don't have to give people a hard time about not knowing tech stuff, you know.

I would hardly consider knowing what an ethernet cable does on a basic level 'tech stuff,' but that's subjective. What I do know is that WiiUseeker here has the reasoning ability of a ten-year-old, believing Boo to be a prominent character in the Mario series that could easily be added to Smash a reskin of Kirby. He's a perfect example of the simple-mindedness of this forum that's kept me from being an active member for a long time. Of course, I can't educate a whole forum on using logic and reasoning, but I can call individual people out whenever they do something really... non thought-out.

I really don't know why there are two threads.

You don't like my ideas or agree with me, and as a result you think I'm stupid. Seems like I'm not the only one with a logic problem... people who expect others to think the way they do and get surprised when people don't go with the flow of their arrogance and pride often find disappointment and are kept away from interaction especially in places where many different people like to go and share complex and diverse ideas. Like an internet forum. You may be one of those perfect examples of the type of people who enjoy to ignorantly warn someone of the feather on their hat when they themselves have a pelican sitting on their heads. I like to call out people who don't realize how wrong they are... Of course, I can't educate everyone.

I can say I had any idea what either one was until my roommate started using one last year, and when Sakurai mentioned the adapter in that Smash direct. It's not exactly common knowledge. Why would it be for people who have never set up an internet connection for a home before? Throughout my later childhood, all I've had to do is learn how wi-fi works, so that I could hook up my DS (and eventually phone) to it.

I'm speaking out of context for that whole "Boo in SSB" argument, but it doesn't sound like a very good reason to be short with someone. I only have respect for people who are open and welcoming to other's ideas. Whatever, it's a free internet. I'm not your mom (or TingLz). I can't force you to be nice.

To get back on topic: the Nintendo adapter is very good and can still be found in stores etc. Not cheap but 100% certain to work. Or you can get a no-brand and take your chances.

I typed in LAN Adapter just out of curiosity, this was the third result:
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/games-consoles/platforms/cables-cha...

The Wii LAN Adapter (Ethernet) allows players to connect theirWii U™ or Wii™ console to a wired high-speed localarea network (LAN). The Wii LAN Adapter is compatible with ADSL, CATVinternet, and FTTH (optical) connections and conforms to 10BASE-T and100BASE-TX standards. When using Wii software (disc software, WiiWare,Wii Channels) with 100BASE-TX network devices, the connection will bethe same speed as with 10BASE-T devices.

And no, it's not quicker to ask on a thread. By the time I searched, found and posted this in all likelyhood even if I edit nobody would have had a change to read and reply to my post. Some questions are better to just google or look up on Wiki.

oh, and to be very, very pedantic "Ethernet" doesn't necessarily mean literally those standard network cables we all know and love. It can be a whole range of media for data transmission. To make things even more complex "LAN" doesn't at all imply that the connection is wired either, wireless dongles are technically also LAN adapters. It's just usually when people are talking about wired they say LAN and when they're talking about wireless they say WLAN. Although in the context of the Wii U? Obviously a "LAN Adapter" is wired and with standard copper cables not something like an optical link. Because the thing has wireless out of the box and consumers won't have (or need) and optical link. But you know, common sense and google rather than asking questions that people should be able to work out for themselves. Give people at least a little bit of credit for their ability to work stuff out on their own.

.... also the questioner in question is making a habbit of creating lots of threads for similar such easily researchable questions. Maybe they should start reconsidering their approach so the forums aren't full of the same questions from the same person over and over again.

Don't take the "you should just google it" thing as an insult. Stop playing the victim and pretending that people who do know more than you are being arrogant. They're not. What I'm saying is that you have the tools, the ability and the knowledge to be able to find this information out for yourself. You asked for confirmation of something you already knew the answer to. OP even handed it on a silver platter for you with two links to similar such products which both included reasonably detailed product descriptions.

Stop selling yourself short. Think more highly of your ability to work things out for yourself.

Well, I didn't (and still don't) see that on the search engine I'm using (Bing happens to be default on my computer).

Maybe not, but it certainly is easier, and doesn't waste any of your time. You don't see people in real life conversation asking a question, with the reply "Go look it up on your phone! It takes two seconds!" Why make people search for it when you can speak for yourself much more easily, and actually be helpful? It's like, instead of holding doors open for people, yelling at them "you have arms, do it yourself!"

What about any of that is common sense? Isn't it much easier to make sure that everyone in the conversation is on the same page, instead of pulling from different sources before formulating your own, secluded-ly composed answer, at the risk of mixing up information and misinterpretation?

I am sure as heck not asking any questions on this forum after seeing this reaction.

I'm looking in eBay and I found one (not a very reasonable price) from Germany. Will it work with an American console?

As some advice, which is apparently forbidden now, Bing is crap. Also searches are generally geared to give you more relevant results. I happen to live in an area where there are about 4 or so JBHiFis within 20mins or so of a drive away. They're an Australian retailer, obviously you're not going to get the same results. I'm sure however that whoever searches that will be able to find their answer in the first few links. Hell, OP put two such links on the top of this page!

It's different and you know it. When you're asking someone face to face the person is literally right there. If anyone involved knows the answer then clearly that's the most efficient way. Online however it's easier for all involved if you just search for your answer or at least read the thread. It's a lot quicker and often the people who answer on forums are wrong anyway. Rather than posting a question they know the answer to, derailing the thread, going back to the thread at a latter time and then getting snarky when they realised that someone asked them to look it up.

Well sorry if I decided to go all pedantic. All I was showing was that even if it was a waste of everyone's time involved and derailed the thread the question was actually kinda interesting. Because in actual fact "LAN Adapter" doesn't necessarily imply that it's "Ethernet". The only reason it should be obvious for all involved is that in the context of the Wii U it could only be one thing.

Nicolai wrote:

If the question is so easily answerable by google and you are just asking for confirmation of something you know? Or if you're creating another thread for a topic that has surely been done before? Or if you know you're going to get snarky when people don't respond in exactly the way you want them to? Then sure, please don't bother

@skywake, well, in all fairness, OP's links for LAN Adapters do have the word "ethernet" in the url, and one could assume that shop listings would include a description of what they are. But I still believe that it's rude to tell someone to look up something when they themselves know the answer, regardless of context or time barrier.

The thread wouldn't have been derailed had I not took offense at the rudeness, so that's on me, not WiiUseeker2.

I don't think it's rude to give your answer the question and then follow it up with "that information can be found on google". Not even in the slightest. To use your face to face comparison it would be like if someone asked when the train was arriving and you gave them the answer and followed up by showing them where the timetable was. Or to spell it out, "10mins, the times are up on the board there". If anything that's more polite than just giving the answer.

If they had replied without the answer and just how to find it then that would be borderline. For the train analogy that would be like saying "timetable's over there". But even then, this isn't IRL, you are on the internet and the question has already been answered only a few posts before.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. Perhaps worded in a more polite way, but by itself it is essentially discouraging.

It's one and the same for all consoles. I saw that play-asia also sells the European packaging of the LAN adapter, according to their web site.
