Looking for recomendations on Wii U hard drives and where to buy them.

Seems when I look all I find are portable drives that are not powered.

I want a 2TB powered HDD fully compatible with Wii U and need help finding one.

Have you tried looking for "Desktop" hard drives as opposed to "portable" hard drives? Might explain why you are finding the non-powered type.

2T is a bit much isn't it. I've got a 500G portable hardive running off a y cable, which has been working fine for the past 4 years. So far I've filled up just over 300G with 28 WiiU games, 3 Wii games, and roughly 40 eShop and VC games.

I have a 500GB hard drive that is powered in an enclosure. It sometimes has issues booting though.....sometimes it just doesn't show up and sometimes it just rearranges all the icons. Anyway its is completely full so I was thinking of getting more space.

I have tried searching for desktop but it never seems like a reliable way to filter results. Its also difficult to find ones small enough for the Wii U that only supports 2TB. It just seems like these hard drives are kind of out dated and hard to find. If you have any links to ones you would recommend please post....I don't know good place to buy from.

Can you use a bigger than 2 TB drive on the Wii U? Only 2 TB are usable right?

I got a seagate 1tb portable hard drive and found it a little hard to get a usb y cable eventually sourced one from the local computer store which was a female USB to 2xUSB I've only just got it literally yesterday and will update you when I can. Fingers crossed it works.

I use a 500 gb western digital hd that I got off of eBay for $30. Works great.

@sentiententity is that a powered one?

I would wager that any HDD will work, with a quality y-cable.

The one I use is just an old internal laptop HDD connected directly to my Wii U via a SATA-to-usbY. No caddy, just a bare internal drive, hidden from view.

I tried using an old hard drive from a computer with a USB connecting kit. It didn't work properly for long.

I had tried using a portable 80 GB HDD in the past and it barely worked at all even with a Y cable. Seems to work fine with PC.

I have been using a 500 GB externally powered HDD in an enclosure and it has worked for the most part. Sometimes it doesn't come online and I can't rearrange my icons on my menu because sometimes it boots in a strange sequence and all the icons go in to some default order.

Anyway I orderred the 3TB seagate drive off Amazon https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TKFEEJ4/ref=od_aui_det...

It formatted 2TB which shows as well over 2000GB free. I got the 3 TB because it was acutally cheaper than the 2TB. It seems to be working perfectly in a little bit of usage so far after copying everything over.

I use a Samsung Evo 840 120GB SSD in a Star tech enclosure, USB y cable - works PERFECT no need for power adapters or extra cables. 👌
