@Blast: I think the reason Splatoon was mentioned was that it reached 1 million sales in its barebones form. There's no way that the launch multiplayer content could be considered enough, people bought the game with the trust that the new content would arrive.

That's just physical. Include digital and it's probably around 1 mil. I don't know the exact portion that are digital. Might change from game to game. But they announced Hyrule Warriors had sold 1 mil when it was around 0.8 in physical.
That is from January though. I think probably Pikmin and Lego City Undercover will have passed 1 mil at this point too. VG Chartz lists them at 0.93 each (just physical).
Bayonetta's probably a bit under though. I imagine it'll hit 1 mil over it's lifetime. I wonder if that'll be considered a success or not.
So yesterday it was announced that Bayonetta was the winner of the Smash Ballot and comes with a stage "Umbra Clock Tower" based on the first game (the 2nd video starts the Bayonetta section at 18:20).
I wonder if this will boost the franchise's popularity such that maybe there's a Bayonetta 3 on the next Nintendo home console?
Smash Bros is the entire reason Fire Emblem was localized and likely why Earthbound is still talked about so much. So yes, that is an entirely reasonable idea.
I don't think it will be immediate but I also would not be entirely surprised if Bayonetta 2 is Platinum's best selling game someday.
I'm know I'm going to go out and buy Bayonetta now just because of the Smash reveal alone. Loved the first game and I really love the character, only reason I haven't gotten Bayonetta 2 is money and laziness. I'd just feel bad ignoring the game at this point though. I got a real urge to play through the first one again.

It's also what lead to Kid Icarus getting a new game 20 years after the last one.
And I will gladly support any initiative to get Bayonetta 3 made.
@Grumblevolcano: both games have already entered the current best seller list on the North American eshop. They haven't been there since a month after their release.
Bloody hell, I've started playing this again with a gap of at least 6 months and the game is just killing me so now I''m thinking of just starting it from the beginning.
