Topic: Battling the anti-Nintendo tide.

So, I just had a debate on my Facebook with someone who was talking about how doomed Nintendo is. Keep in mind that this person was simply parroting the laziest and weakest anti-Nintendo arguments that bounce around the net. No matter how much I would provide facts and figures that were directly contradictory to his points, he would continue hammering away. It all ended up being "Nintendo sucks and is doomed to fail." I did find it particularly humorous when he called Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon all "niche" titles.

Now, normally I would write off this kind of idiocy as just something you see on the internet, however, I see it amongst even Nintendo fans and I certainly see it all over the gaming press. No matter how the 360 and the PS3 did in their first year, and even though the Wii U is in very similar shape, the narrative is that Wii U is doomed while those other 2 consoles were given time to develop by the consumer and the gaming press.

For reference, here are the sales for Wii U, PS3, and XBox 360 after 1 year on the market:

PS3: 5.5 million
XBox 360: 5.6 million
Wii U: 3.9 million

Now, obviously, Wii U still has the majority and peak period of holiday shopping ahead of it. I see no reason whatsoever for the narrative being so different between these 3 consoles. So, how does Nintendo get out of this illogically negative narrative?

Nothing to see here, just a fan boy ranting, move along people.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Nobody cuts Nintendo any slack. They always have to put up with a tidal wave of criticism, because they dare to be different, to go against the establishment. Most 3rd parties want to produce games just like sausages in a factory, all the same. They can do just that with Xbox and Playstation, but Nintendo deviates from the standard and that means more effort to them trying to figure out the system.

MS and Sony are two HUGE corporations and they've decided it's time for the all-gaming Nintendo to go the way of Sega. This year's E3 and the aftermath was a joke: more like a political election than gaming with all the mudslinging, undercutting, and mindless propaganda (look up the OUYA parking lot incident for a GREAT example).

The only way Nintendo can even come close to responding to this torrent of corporately indoctrinated fanboys is to fix as many of the problems as they can and keep promoting in a positive manner. Nintendo has dedicated fans, but even many of them are waiting for Mario Kart, a new Zelda, a strong promotional push to push them out of misinformation, etc.

I also think Nintendo needs to try and solidify themselves as a gaming middle class. I predict there will only be 4-5 major game devs by the end of this gen because of IMMENSE rises in dev costs. Nintendo games can't compete with games like GTA, but they shouldn't have to. They need to set up their own development and sales brackets and just keep trucking along instead of trying to throw money into a furnace like Sony, MS, and all the major devs to inflate the market and push others out. Xenoblade is a perfect example. It didn't cost anywhere near as much as FFXIII but it was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better. Nintendo needs to embrace this ideology and promote it like crazy.

And Pokemon niche? LOL, silly indoctrinated fanboys...Pokemon alone could probably keep Nintendo afloat for a while.

You know, I wonder if some of the hate is because Nintendo is a "video game only" company. With Sony and Microsoft, they do a bunch of other stuff, and some people may like what they do outside of video games, so it makes them as a whole look better.

@Samurai_Goroh: EXACTLY! I tried to explain that Nintendo is a company that operates from top to bottom with game DEVELOPMENT in mind. Iwata was a developer! No one will listen, though. It's simply maddening. If it is at a point where people simply won't listen to facts, do you simply give up?

Advertising, lots of advertising, particularly to disprove the belief that the Gamepad is just an accessory to the original Wii by the general public. Give more focus on 'hardcore' exclusives like Bayonetta 2 and Monolith Soft's X.

Also, kill of the original Wii as soon as possible in all regions. The Wii U does everything the Wii does and much more. Almost anyone who ever wanted an original Wii either already has it or can easily find one pre-owned. For the very small number of people who don't fall into either category, the Wii Mini exists.

This reminds me: there seems to be many people who don't "get" Nintendo... there's one kid I know who saw me playing 3DS, and I was playing Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. He says "I have that on GameCube, but I don't remember that level". I told him it was the sequel. He then says "why are all the good Nintendo games mobile? Why aren't there any console games?" I said, "well, there's the Wii U, you know..." He then says "well, that's mobile too, you can play it on the toilet and stuff". ...I had nothing o say after that. Later I overhear him say "Nintendo is addicted to mobile". I do not understand this kid.

What bothers me is the sheer misinformation that floats around. If you don't like Nintendo, fine. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. But when you say things like Mario & Zelda & Pokemon are niche, then you're being ignorant. You aren't making an argument based in reality.

Nintendo needs to be more aggressive about dispelling misconceptions about Wii U. That's a major component of what is holding it back. Tell people it is NOT dead and it is NOT an add on for the Wii.

more informed than the people I know... one of my friends thought handhelds were still like in the GBA era(image and sound wise) he even said earlier this year 3DS games sound all the same(didn't even notice it was bacause I was always playing the same game) of course I can't expect much from a strictly PC gamer, especially about handhelds...

Well if he's a pc-only gamer... He probably does see and hear 3DS games the same as he sees and hears GB games.

PC gaming does things to your head.

In this particular case, I guess it's more like Brazil's tax policies on imported "luxury" items. Consoles are a luxury, computers are not. Am I right?
Brazil is not what I would call a regular, healthy videogame market. I don't mean to be rude. My own country, Portugal, though we don't have those insane taxes on imported stuff, is strongly pro- Playstation and anti-Nintendo since the 90's. And before that, it was pro-SEGA and anti-Nintendo still. So, I don't hold it as a relevant example either.

Samurai_Goroh

GuSolarFlare

@Samurai_Goroh actually even gaming computers are really expensive here. other than the taxes, things are pretty like you said about portugal(about the anti-Nintendo) luckily since the 3DS started getting popular people aren't so much anti-Nintendo as in the DS times.

@Samurai_Goth I do get the same feeling about my country (being pro-sony and anti-nintendo), actually, i have a feeling its the same for most of mainland Europe. Wii U sold terrible here in the PAL region.

IGOR!

You aren't taking into account that NO third-party developers abandoned the PS3 or 360 in their first year. Nintendo has DOZENS of companies that refuse to do business with them or release games on their consoles. The situation for the Wii-U is far more dire.
