It's important but it's not a deal breaker. I still keep my old consoles if I ever feel like playing an older game.
A new console not being backwards compatible is at most, an inconvenience as I have to plug my old one back into my television.
Store purchases not carrying over though, that's BS. Once the servers are taken down for the PS3/360, there's no way of getting to the downloadable games you own. It's a duck move from both Sony and Microsoft.
I think it's not a dealbreaker but it's kind of something you expect, especially when you come from a company who has been doing it with their consoles for quite some time. It's mainly great because of the fact it saves you the hassle of having to reconnect a system and it helps save space wherever you keep your game systems.

I'm not buying a console without Backwards compatibility on some level. I can't have a million consoles set up all the time, and I play games from all generations all the time.
People will say it's not important and then Microsoft/Sony will do a Pokemon on you. Launch day will come and the must-have title will launch on PS3/360 but not PS4/XB1. So I think it matters but maybe not enough to sway the average person's purchase.
That said, if you were tossing up between getting a current or last gen console the lack of backwards compatibility could easily sway you not to get the current one. If you're entering into a console without any back catalogue of games the "old" console looks very appealing if the new one lacks backwards compatibility. It's miles cheaper, the games you haven't played are cheaper still and it has a massive library of games you haven't played. It's probably the most important to these people.

I'm not sure what I want to think of the PS4 thus far. I seriously wish every console had the social interactivity the console's going to have because that's just sweet. But the lack of backwards capability and the lack of transferring downloaded PSN games is a total drag.
I love BC, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I'll be getting the PS4 regardless. I know I could drive 20 minutes and pick up a PS2 for 50 bucks right now if I wanted/needed, so it's not the end of the world.
But BC would make it backwards compatible with the PS3, not the PS2 (unless they went past the normal amount of generations) and a PS3 would run you $200.
You're right, but I'm thinking in terms of the here and now. PS3 will still be relevant sales wise for a few more years, and I can worry about those games and a cheaper used system further down the road.
As someone who doesn't currently own an Xbox360, it's a dealbreaker. Other than the dozen other things I abhor about the XboxOne, I would much rather purchase a 360 for less than half the price and have access to the huge backlog of dozens of great games (even though 4/5 of those great games are multiplats that I can get on PC or PS3, both of which have much better exclusives, and therefore I have zero incentive to even ever purchase a 360.)
Basically, you're alienating potential buyers who are new to your company, and who don't want to wait over a year for a library of decent exclusive experiences to build up.
I like how you think! For me, if it ain't Nintendo, its Steam/Valve. Don't want to support Microscam or Sony.

Wait... They are going to do THAT?! Ha... ha... ha... hahaha... Bye Microsoft. And Sony better fix that quick lest they fall into the despicable category.

lol, good times.
Aside from the Wii, I've never taken advantage of backwards capability. When it comes to the PS4, I want to be able to complete my unplayed PlayStation 3 games in a somewhat convenient way.
It's not like you would have known that, but I forgive you for your superb arrogance. (-:

I did not entirely contradict myself. Maybe I should have clarified, but there aren't very many reasons to buy a PS4, and to see backwards capability unannounced (as of now), is not only a deal breaker to some but is another missed opportunity to get excited for it.
Also, sometimes asking questions first can help oneself from looking like a donkey.
However here's what you need to remember: This matter cant be measured by simply checking whether more people agree or disagree with the importance of backward compatibility. Those people who say it is important are the ones who may not buy the console, or choose to buy another console instead. Those people who say it isn't important haven't had their mind changed one way or another.
If for every 30 gamers, 15 say it's important to them - then that's a big risk when selling a console. 50% of the people who possibly might not buy it simply because of that fact, or who might turn to another console? Of course these statistics aren't real - but the point stands. Backwards compatibility is important because so many people believe it to be so. People not finding it important is irrelevant.
Honestly not having a console being backwards compatible seems like a real mistake to me. I guess we'll just have to see how it affects Microsoft/Sony (Assuming either/both will indeed do this).

So...it's not useless to you, right?
lol, Contrarians are amusing.
A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.
I'm in the "BC is a convenient bonus" camp. Although I have an entire fleet of video game consoles now between I'll the ones I've kept and all the ones I bought later on. So the more games any one unit can play, the more useful it is to me. I'm actually thinking of getting the new Retro Duo when it comes out and replacing my NES with it. Haven't had my SNES hooked up in years since I just don't have space for it and most of the games I want to play on it ended up hitting the VC for Wii.
I wouldn't make the decision of whether or not to buy a new console to be based on whether it was BC, though I might be willing to pay more for a BC-enabled variant.
Where's the KABOOM?! There was supposed to be an earth-shattering KABOOM! sigh delays...delays...
Backwards compatibility is one my favorite features of the Wii U. All of the Wii controllers can be used for the Wii U and the games are in HD. I really like playing Other M and Prime 3 even to this day and so on, so forth. I really despise the lacking of backwards compatibility that the Xbox One has, because there is a number of great 360 games on there. I personally think that backwards compatibility is amazing.
