So if there's any series (barring maybe Phoenix Wright and Mass Effect) that I got into specifically this generation (last generation, whatever), it would certainly be Assassin's Creed. And as a fan of this series I have 2 main things to say about this game at this point (combined with what I've read other people say about certain aspects). 1. This is the best AC game since 2/Brotherhood. 2. They need to stop making Assassin's Creed games. So far I'm in the middle of Sequence 4, and I have quite a bit to say so far.

As a fun pirate game, I'd highly recommend this game to everyone. The ship parts are amazing, worth getting the game just for them. It really feels like you're controlling this large ship on the ocean and how it controls is wonderful if you're into that sort of thing. It has very natural and fun and video gamey combat with other ships, and it turns into this game of trying to go in the circle in the best way to avoid enemy attacks or to lineup your ship with whether you want to shoot cannons or ram the ship etc. The AI might be a little cheap sometimes, or it might just have enemy attack patterns you have to learn how to avoid, it's hard to tell. The ships have levels, which is pretty funny, but also useful to avoid combat with level 20+ ships so you don't die early on. But it is so much fun, and the game opens up fairly quickly (though every other mission seems to introduce gameplay elements, even if you've already done similar things on your own, which is annoying). So you can just do whatever, go attack a fortress, take it over, watch the guns on it destroy local enemy ships, then go an island to find buried treasure with the map and then head into a small island town to beat up some people at a bar, get some collectibles, upgrade your ship's weapons and then head out on an assassination mission to tail some guy only to blow him up, board them, kill half their men and add their ship to your crew for a trading game I won't even go into. And then you harpoon a shark to death. And that's the whole game, just doing whatever you want. And it's filled with sea shanties your crew sing, which is amazing. It's so good and addicting and my OCD ARGH.

On land it is like Assassin's Creed, you climb stuff and then hide and kill people stealthily or in combat. If you've played any game, you have a general idea but one thing they started in the last game I like is that they've started to separate and improve action and stealth parts. Some missions have you (required or optional objective) to sneak around and you have tons of areas with grass and like similar stealth games it's a fun puzzle trying to figure out the best way to take guards out (though sometimes the game is just unfair or stupid about it). I like taking out as many as possible this way, probably because the combat on land is the weakest part of the game. Fairly recently I got the ability to shoot blowdarts that either make enemies temporarily bezerk or asleep, which is pretty amusing and interesting. I'll also say, the AI for human enemies is often really stupid. They'll do a decent job at looking for where you are after they've spot you but otherwise they tend to lose you easily and it can become a game of taking out guards stealthily until they find you again, then running away, then killing them again. Occasionally you can lose them by running into them and hiding in front of them. It'd be really bad, but it's so funny that I kinda enjoy it and it isn't always stupid easy. The ship parts especially have become shockingly difficult in even certain medium difficulty parts of the overworld.

Story is fine for what it is, but what it is is still doing too much for the sake of having tons of gameplay variety. Just like the last game, the story goes in a million direction and utterly fails to have a real focus most of the time. But unlike the last game, it seems to almost be aware of that and it fits much better, while AC3 was supposed to be a sort of climax for a part of the series and utterly failed at doing that. Regardless, what it does do is still fairly well written and enjoyable and with decent characters and it all is usually for the sake of the gameplay, so it's cool. But after 3 and considering 4 (according to what I've heard) does nothing to get me back into the main story of the series, I'm really starting to not care. It's a shame, as the future story thing has so much potential but they really do way too much in this series.

This game is way too much, which is my problem with open world games. Partially my fault for trying too hard to get some of this stuff, but I hate this idea that every game needs to be 40+ hours long. But at the same time, this is one of the best examples of an open world game doing everything it can to make you want to explore an open world. But I feel like playing so many AC games that have so much to do is making them worse, even if they actually get better. So even if Wii U gets the next game, I'm probably done with the series, at least for now.

One last thing, the multiplayer has been pretty cool. It's purely based on stealth and tracking your target and it is a really clever and interesting part of the game that I'm glad I finally get to experience. It has a solid tutorial too and it seems to have a lot of depth if you can master the abilities you can use.

So tl;dr: Awesome pirate game, don't get if you are sick of Assassin's Creed.

I agree with ya. I have been looking for a pirate game like this for years (I was a huge fan of Sid Meier's Pirates when I was a kid and even now. I have tried many pirate games both console and PC and I have yet to find one that really captures the true spirit of being a pirate, until this game. I can say I was not a fan of Assassin's Creed 1, 2 or any of the others till AC III so I can really compare this to other AC games. I will be honest though with this game I have been doing alot more of the pirate stuff then the actual storyline. I have been attacking ships, harpooning sharks and all the other pirate stuff and have not even wanted really to do the main story, which is sad now that I think of it, IMO this game should have either been a spinoff from the AC line or its own IP and honestly if it was its own IP I think it would have done really well.

But yeah in conclusion I am enjoying this game alot more as a Pirate game more then an Assassin's Creed game.

I demand a Spin-off based solely on the pirate part. Seriously, why did they even bother making it Assassin's Creed?

Nice write-up, btw, I really want to play it now.

Cause the wanted to use a name that is recognized and pretty much guarantee sales. At least that's my guess.

But they could've had a better game + a new, fresh franchise to milk to death, especially with the next generation coming around. I mean, they could've still used the Assassin's Creed engine and just tweaked the mechanics more to suite a game that's not Assassin's Creed. I mean, you're probably right, but that's really short-sighted on their part...

@CanisWolfred: I totally agree with you. I know so many AC fans that are not even touching this one cause of how far off this game goes off on the AC story and yet I know others who are loving this game but aren't AC fans (like myself). Its odd that Ubi creates a new franchise with Watchdogs yet this AC IV is part of the AC franchise. Heck just should have just named Watchdogs AC V.

The fact that they also delayed Watch Dogs is another reason why they wanted to use the AC name for this game.

Companies it seems are afraid to step out of the comfort zones nowadays, so instead the mess up good franchise.

In some ways, I actually think it's a good idea to be an AC game. Like I said, this fits what AC3 was trying to do, much better than it did in AC3 and the different parts of history being highlighted makes it make sense to try something different if the past storyline has a different perspective like this.

And I prefer this to what AC4 would have been otherwise.

Seriously, I can't believe I put AC3 as my 2nd favorite game of last year, I don't know what I was thinking. It was like when I put Skyrim above Arkham City and Radiant Historia, dumb decision.

Watch_Dogs is the fresh, new franchise that will be milked to death. There's also The Division and The Crew. There's enough in the way of new series for the now current gen that Ubi can start going crazy with. All three of those have potential to be big.

I'd also say, eventhough I'm not too far in yet, from what I've played I like AC IV for what it is, but from the pirate perspective and as an AC game. It's the first game in the series to really get my attention since II and it a vast improvement over last year's very disappointing game.

I keep hearing good things about the game overall, but I'm done with the series after AC3. I finished Revelations, but didn't enjoy any of it and wasn't even going to play AC3 because of how bad Revelations was, but I got it on sale, made it to sequence 5 or 6 if I remember right, and just couldn't take it anymore. I feel like the series peaked with Brotherhood and then the developers didn't have anything else to really change/add to the formula to make it feel fresh again and the modern storyline was interesting at first, but became ridiculous as the series went along.

I might be able to get behind a stand alone pirate game with a story seperate from the AC series. I've seen some articles on other sites about Ubisoft sending out questionnaires asking about interest in a non-AC pirate game.

Yeah...naval battle are pretty awesome. Never played any of the last ACs so this is my first. I pretty much enjoy the pirate stuff as well as just exploring islands and finding treasures and all that. Screw the story, lol.
(just captured my first Man-O-War today too...it was a low level hip, but still, awesome)

That reminds me, I also like Kenway's Fleet, a nice little minigame. If only you could play it without bootting the game up itself sometimes...they should do something there, lol

That seems like one of those things where you could play that part on a mobile device or something.

So what? I still think it would've been a better idea on both a critical and possibly financial standpoint to have just made a full-on Pirate IP. It's not like the market is flooded with Pirate themed open world games or anything...

I actually just finished AC IV today, man what a heck of a game. 96% BTW so I need to go back and clean up some stuff. It's a great pirate game that just happens to have a lot of Assassins Creed put in.

I had only played the first AC previously but 4 has prompted me to go back and just punch through them to fill in the story lines. I really enjoyed the story from Black Flag, they did a good job taking historical characters and tying it all together in the game world. I highly recommend it to anyone even if they didn't like other AC games because it is a solidly fun open world game.

You're implying a new IP would sell better.

And what is the framerate? Ie. compared to AC3 - is it the same/better/worse? In AC3 there were some slowdowns but it was still playable.

Well your in luck as Ubisoft has been gauging interest in making a pure pirate game devoid of any AC.
