More often they have less quality stuff and the occasional very good price on an item with very low stock. Plus from memory I think some of the gems are normally JB or EB exclusives... like Punchout on Wii which was a JB exclusive.

Although I think Tatsunoku vs Capcom was a Kmart exclusive....

They're a grocery store first, right? I can't see this being too big of a deal, outside of small country areas where they may be the only store for tens of miles...and I don't know how likely that is in the UK...

Very true. I don't visit those shops a lot so I forget about them.

JB HI FI is the best place to go. They really support the Wii U. They display the stock nicely, they have posters, and review the games.

I would not be surprised if eventually the only real place to find video games would be in places like JB HI FI and EB games.

Places like Target, K-Mart, Big W and Dick Smith have never supported games much. You'll be lucky to find a couple of games in a Dick Smith. And Target, K Mart and Big W have always had really small pathetic entertainment sections for CDS, PC, DVDs, everything. They'll probably go the way of Myer eventually and stop selling much entertainment products.

It's not the end of Nintendo it just means the games will end up in more speciality stores.

I don't like how thay've stopped selling the games also, because when buying new games ASDA are cheap. Thay also drop the price on games for a week or two, roll backs, i don't want to use Game so i use amazon now.

Can anyone take a look at these sales figures and still think Sony or Microsoft paid Asda to drop Wii U?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-31-nintendo-records...

So in April, May and June, in Australia and Europe combined it sold 10,000 units. This is so far below any other console. The PS3 and 3DS struggles don't even come close. 10k for 2 regions. Can you imagine how low the UK sales are by itself? Then imagine ASDA are just getting a piece of that number and you can see why they want to wash their hands of it for now.

... wonder why it has gone so quiet in here!

: )

The 3DS is doing rather superb though.

True they do stock a lot of junk that I wouldn't usually bother with, and often their games aren't priced at a reasonable level for the games age, but I did manage to get Rune Factory 1 & 2 for $20 each from Kmart (bargain). Not sure if Punchout was exclusive on it's release, however it isn't so now, Kmart have them and I picked up a copy.

I do believe I explained with some blow back that the Wii U is in a drought. And just because some people are playing a bunch of games on it doesn't mean it's still not in a drought. Pikmin 3 may get it out of the drought, MAYBE. Wonderful 101, a good game, comes out the same week as GTA5. Zelda, a great game, wonderfully remastered in HD is still the same game & at a $50USD price point, could struggle to massively move consoles. All of these games are great games but shouldn't be relied on to move huge console numbers. If the do, that would be great, but shouldn't be relied upon.

@uptownsoul

You're only getting "blow back" because your actual statement is hypocritical. You just listed three very promising and diverse games coming out for the Wii U over the next three months, and then continue to state that the system is still in a "drought." Your expectations are unrealistic. A heavy-hitting first-party release every month is not a "drought," no matter what system you are playing. As of Pikmin 3's launch, the Wii U can no longer considered to be in a drought. Some may even go as far back as NSMBU Luigi DLC and Game and Wario. The fact is that your statement is just incorrect. There are not just "some people ... playing a bunch of games." There are LOTS of people, hundreds of thousands more than you will find on this forum, who are happily playing lots of games for their Wii U, even before the release of Pikmin 3 and the end of the "drought."

lol Where I live in the U.S., the closest store that sells games is Walmart at about 25 miles away. I only go there to buy recent-ish games, such as when I bought Fire Emblem last night.

Yes, but that's America. The U.S. is a large country that still has plenty of relatively remote areas, and lots of things are more spread out compared to several European countries. I'm not sure, but I don't think there are anywhere near as many remote areas where people who might be interested in games may be living.

I can totally understand, the Wii U has been selling horrendously in the UK, its potentially the worst major region for sales in the world. People still have more than enough options to buy a Wii U though, and I expect ASDA will start selling it again once the first party games come along and give the console the boost it needed when it first came out with 3D World and Wind Waker.

We can have this conversation again if you will. If you mean drought as in lack of software, it is no longer the truth.
And I think I'm not the only one who just said that.

Please provide data for the PS3 and the 3DS at around the same time after launch.

But tell me: it's been the case since at least February, if ASDA really had issues with Wii U stocks back then — which they did — why wait for the launch of Pikmin 3? Why not stop selling the Wii U 3 months ago when even Nintendo knew the console wasn't going to sell?

Why make this current announcement public? Why make it JUST IN TIME with the release of Pikmin 3, the game that Nintendo said was meant to start the Wii U's momentum regain?

Why stopping from selling the 3DS, which is currently the hottest console on the market?

P.S.: @Peach64 How is your Pikmin 3?

Well, @DePapier I think your right. The store publicizing the wiiU drop is telling. But I can't blame them for a business decision. Unfortunately, wiiU is in a drought.

Folk, these times are over, Pikmin 3 just launched in Europe and in the UK!! In less than a month it's Wonderful 101!! And that's not counting the odd third-party games, nor all the eShop and Wii U VC releases.

That used to make sense before and even then, with direct backwards compatibility and the Wii's neglected yet considerable catalogue, from where I stood as a day-one owner it was a joke — save for February-March when we were all expecting Rayman Legends to save the day like a first-party release...

While people write off the Wii U for being in a drought, the games actually come, gamers buzz it off on Miiverse and no one cares, and then in a few months people will be surprised to see the Wii U on its feet and they'll call it magic.

@DePapier I was trying to agree but until pikmin3 starts selling, wiiU is in a drought. I mean pikmin3 isn't really setting records. It came in second to Minecraft and narrowly beat out a 6 week old Last of Us. So let's not act like wiiU is out of a drought. It can still go either way

You have to remember the game released in Friday, with a digital promotion here in Europe.

The Wii U might not be out of a drought, but it is NOT in a drought: how else would people like me play the console EVERYDAY and STILL have games on hand???

Are you telling me I'm not playing Pikmin 3?
Are you telling me I'm not playing Earthbound?
Are you telling me I'm not enjoying Bit Trip Runner 2, Super Metroid, Nano Assault Neo, F-Zero?
Are you telling none of the retail games I actually own came out?
Please!!!

@DePapier you may be playing all those games. But other than pikmin3 (& that remains to be seen) NONE of those games are console movers. Nintendo needs to move consoles. I think they will, but none of the games you mentioned move wiiU's. So it's in a console moving drought

This mentality is starting to really piss me off. If you wait for a "console mover" to buy the console, fine. But don't neglect the fact that millions are actually enjoying it.

Software sells hardware. But if you're uninterested in the console in the first place, don't blame it on the console, do so on your own refuse to play.

"Console movers..." "Nintendo needs to sell..." Are we actually Nintendo executives?! Do we have any ideas how they actually run this company when they've been in the biz for more than 30 years?!

I'm sick of all those people claiming they have power because they're not buying: that's your problem, STOP making it seem as if the machine itself is creating such issues. I'll await the likes of you on Smash U when all of a sudden you'll have found your "console mover" and when all of a sudden you start understanding why so many people enjoying the Wii U do not regret their purchase one bite.

(That Pikmin 3 puzzle is giving me a bad mood.)
