And the low end Steam Machine models (Which cost as much as the Xone minimum, and more than the PS4), are not near as powerful as either of them. Not to mention, they're going to be running Linux, so the library will be exceedingly poor (Unless you want to shell out more money for Windows) for a while. Not to forget, the parts will quickly become outdated and will require more money for upgrades.
If you want a standard controller for PC gaming, just use an Xbox controller. Heck, I use a DualShock 3 and it's worked with every game I have, Steam and otherwise. The steam controller is shaping up to be fairly spotty, and you'll probably want an Xbox controller anyways (Yet more to the $500).
That's not even including a disc drive if you want to watch blu-rays, DVD's, etc.

I really am not sure if you know what you're getting into, honestly.

.

Already have a 360 controller, so not yet more to the $500. And it's more than that. Why does everyone assume that just because someone is interested in buying a Steam Machine they don't know what they're getting into? Like I said in my very first post. Poor library doesn't matter to me. There are 3 games I care about. I said it then, I'll say it again. If those 3 games are confirmed to be available I'm all in. There's no reason not to. Wii U can output some amazing graphics. Steam Machine is much better than Wii U. I'm sold. It's that easy. I don't care if PS4 is a little better. Makes no difference to me. I just want to play the games. And considering games like Call of Duty Ghosts on Wii U and Project Cars, heck even Super Mario 3D World and Monolith Soft's X look pretty close to what I've seen on my PS4, I seriously doubt the graphics of the Steam Machine, which is far superior, is going to be an issue. It could be on par with Wii U and I'd STILL want one, because again, I save $400 in free online.

It's simple. I'm not a fan of the controller, but it's interesting and I want to try it. I want the Steam OS, not Windows. I hate Windows. I like the look of them> a Steam Machine will fit in nicely next to the Wii U. A PC tower will not. I also like that these will be standardized, and hopefully with that, in the future, standardized settings for games on various Steam Machines. Upgrades are optional, not required. You don't upgrade a PS4, so why would you need to upgrade a Steam Machine? Sure, you COULD, to continue pushing ULTRA, but that's optional. If I can game on Playstation with certain specs all gen, I can do it on a Steam Machine. I'm JUST NOT INTERESTED IN NORMAL PC. Don't like look of the tower. Don't like Windows. Don't like that it's NOT built specifically for gaming. And before you start, Windows is a multi-use OS, not a gaming OS. And again, I'm curious to try that controller, even if it turns out only good for certain games.

In a year, the budget Steam Machines would be lucky to run new games (That Linux gets) at bare minimum settings (Dreamcast-esque visuals). In three? Forget about it.

And you do need to upgrade PC's, Steam Machines included. As @FutureAlphaMale , you simply cannot run Battlefield 4 feasibly on a 2006 PC. That's just a fact of PC gaming. The games are developed for the current hardware, whereas consoles carry the same hardware for 5-7 years. Upgrades are 100% required, it's that simple.

If you want Steam OS, you can run it on any PC you want.

These systems couldn't be any less standardized, with dozens of models. The only different between Steam Machines and and any other pre-built PC is that they're bare-bones and say Vavle on them. They most certainly do not have any magical "Gaming" power in them.

If you go the Steam Machine way, it's your choice, but I guarantee you that you are going to end up sorely disappointed.

I've already said it's his choice several times. And yes they can be upgraded as they are pretty much just PCs, and it costs the same as it would on any other pc.

OK OK OK guys, your just making him mad now and when it gets to that point any type of relevant and factual discussion goes right out the door and it then starts to sound like nothing but attacks. Leave him alone, he stated what he wants, its his choice so let him be. We don't have any say whatsoever with what he buys. I know from what I've been reading it does sound like your trying to help and save him time and money. It is though starting to sound like your telling him his decision is a stupid one. He told you what system he was going to be getting to go along side his Wii U and by doing so he did in fact answer the very topic of this thread.

I personally have thought about getting a Steam Machine. I did however state that I couldn't justify spending money on something like that if I couldn't pick and choose what I wanted in it so I have chosen to build a gaming computer and its going to take some time saving up the money. I build computers and know my fair share amount about computers so I know what I want and its probably going to cost in the ball park of 2000 so I got a bit of saving lol.... I'm thinking about selling my liver if anyone is in the market.

It's up to you whether you want Steam Box or not. It's the same way I feel about people who like PS4. Go ahead and enjoy if you want.

Like you said, you'd want to have a Steam Box, regardless of its capabilities, so there's no reason to compare it to anything else, which is why commenting on people's PC comparison and saying you KNOW it's better than anything isn't exactly warranted.

EDIT: I think a PC is better, and I think home consoles are even better than that, but no one should care.

I'll wait until summer 2014 to see where the Wii U stands then. If it's delivering enough content by then then I'll be content with it being my sole console. If not I'll get a PS4.

It still blows my mind that neither the Mario bundle nor the Skylanders bundle have caused increased sales.

No one has the right to say this, right here. You do realize you're contradicting yourself by saying specs don't matter, but then citing specs on a particular machine, superior, right?

I couldn't really care less about PC or Steam Box. Hell, I'd rather have a PS4 than either of those, but that gives me no right to say that Wii U or Xbox One are superior(my consoles of choice).

Get the games, give up the specs.

i thought this was funny, because i actually do only own a WiiU. despite the obvious trolling in the video (from a ps fanboy's channel, go and see), i'm having a great time. i've only got pikmin 3, wwhd, and sm3dw. these games are great, and if nintendo has something for me to be playing, i'm up for it.

I am just trying to figure out why people are so hung up on a steam machine when they can practically get one right now that's all. I honestly hope it works out for people like you but in all honestly I think it will just become like the Ouya and it will be a niche market. But hey we will see.

You just made my point for me. I said I'm not a graphics craze, I just wna pay the games. And I didn't mean it is superior, I meant its power is superior (which it is, that's a proven fact not an opinion). By no means do I think its a superior gaming machine tho. In my personal opinion, Wii U is my favorite console I've ever owned. That statement was in response to someone telling me I shouldn't buy one because it'll be no where near the PS4.

Graphics actually DO matter to me, but only to the extent that they are not so primitive they take away from the experience. And in my opinion, Wii U is past the threshold of graphics mattering anymore. So my point was, that the Steam Machine is more powerful than Wii U, and if I'm happy with Wii U, then I'll DEFINITELY be ok with Steam Machine. I even said, "I don't care if it's only on par with Wii U, I just want to play the games".

It also depends on what you define as power. I would consider Steam Box a "weak" machine, but not based on numbers.

Graphics do matter to me, too, but I don't believe that can always be determined by a number, especially if numbers mean different things in comparison to one another.

Sometimes specs can't be compared, so you're better off not doing so. If you look at the hardware resource use for each console on a game like Project Cars, all of them are using different numbers for the same result.

Understood. But I do know what graphics card the iBuyPower Steam Machine is using, and I did my homework and also chatted with some PC gamers to get an idea of where that machine will stand. All of them said pretty much the same thing. It'll be right at or under the Xbox One, but if you upgraded to the next card up it would put it over the PS4. That's all I needed to know was a ballpark estimate.

If that's what you think, then fine. It depends on what "over the PS4" specifically means, if you ask me. People can hardly figure out what to do with what they already have, so I'm not worried about it.

Im sticking whit only the wii U this gen, and the 3ds for handhelds (might get a vita if things improve), you see i not a fan of the road the gaming industry is embracing at the moment, micro transactios, releasing buggy games then parching them several times, excesive unjustified DLC, i feel nintendo its the only way to go this gen because they dont do those things (at least not a lot). and of course the first party titles.

migth get a ps4 way in the future like three or more years for KH3 and Uncharted 4 (love this series)
