When they were asked after the presentation if the Wii U could handle Battlefield 3, the question was completely avoided. Yes, this could be a quick diversion to keep from leaking information, but the fact that the either it, or Modern Warfare 3 weren't announced for Wii U as equal titles to PS3/360 during the conference makes me think that the system isn't on par with what these two consoles are starting to currently produce.

it's just too early to judge IMO — in fact, they didn't look like they were really ready to be presenting it at all. they showed a lot of ideas regarding what the hardware itself was capable of, they ran through a reel of developer reactions and then showed some of the 3rd party games being developed for it, but note that nothing was playable on the floor but a few demos that Reggie stressed repeatedly were just demos, not actual games in production. What they showed was interesting (the HD graphics were very nice!), but that's about it for me at the moment tbqh.

you're absolutely right. on top of that, one of Nintendo's major obstacles has always been their online service, and they showed absolutely nothing regarding U's online features/capabilities aside from the video chat thing — it's another thing that's got me thinking it's way too early to expect anything solid, because they're probably still hashing all that stuff out. with them not even deigning to show off anything but the tablet controller, i wouldn't be surprised to see some major revisions announced before U finally winds up with a release date, lol.

I don't see what the big deal is. Or what you're complaining about (TL;DR). As long as there's a good line-up of games, I couldn't care less about the hardware. The controller looks fine to me, doesn't seem to be anything to complain about. Is it not "hardcore" enough for you? Is it "gimmicky"? You really won't know until you see it in action or find out more about the available games. And as for the name, they can call it whatever the hell they want if they give me some good games to play, IMO.

I, for one, am ecstatic that they didn't make the Wii U all about let's recapture the hardcore blah blah blah. I'm much more interested in its possibilities for new kinds of local, social play, and I could care less if major 3rd party franchises show up or not.

They could have named it the WiiWii right?
@Mac Idk it's the first time I have played a game like it. How it was a platformer but there was different places to go bout and over. How everything was all circular and use of gravity and all that jazz.
It was innovative for me, Inb4 someone says it's been done before and says Megaman.

@warioswoods: the presenters (i forget if it was Iwata at that point or what) were all about 'recapturing the hardcore', lol... they just didn't really show all that much that would IMO. i think its just too early to say anything for sure. :3

I'm more excited for the 3DS news more than anything shown this E3, but seriously people the new Nintendo console's name is just a name. Does it really matter? Besides not only does the console itself have more than a years time for it to enhance/change but remember when the Wii's name was the Revolution ? Then it just suddenly changed to the Wii? That may be the case here as well. Maybe not. But all in all dismissing the system so quickly (when we were only shown a 3 minute video and some images), is as ignorant and as paranoid as you can get. What can Nintendo do in a years time? Let me answer that: A colossal amount.

Just for you.

I can think of a few games that used it briefly ("briefly" meaning "one level"), but even if it wasn't innovative, at the very least it was creative. By the way, what Megaman game are you talking about?

@TBD: If they do make revisions, I hope they revise the name.

The game will have been available for all other platforms for over a year by the time the Wii U is released though.

They were never going to pull gamers away from Xbox and PS3. This E3 is about showcasing more hardcore third party games so they can hold onto the gamers they already have. Wii U should attract the more casual crowd thanks to that tablet controller, and getting more hardcore third party games will help balance things out.

Highwinter wrote:

seems the rumours of it merely being onpar with the Xbox 360 were true, which is unfortunate, as it's likely Microsoft and Sony will reveal new systems next year that are even more powerful, leaving the Wii out of the third party ports again.

I'm not sure how likely that is. Technology plateaus from time to time. Sony and Microsoft could try and launch a new console as powerful as a high end desktop PC, but what would it cost? I doubt Sony would be eager to start marketing another overpowered and overpriced console anytime soon--not if they've learned anything from the past.

Let's step into the way way-back machine.

@blackdragon

Well, that's true, but: while they did talk about the core audience, it wasn't presented as a pivot in emphasis (away from Wii's "new audiences," motion controls, social play, etc). Everything stayed within the rhetoric and aims of the original Wii, just expanded. That, combined with the social demos, shows that they aren't thinking of this primarily as a "back to hardcore" device... so I'm happy.

@shingi_70 I may have missed an announcement today. I've been very busy on top of trying to watch this, write E3 articles, eShop on 3DS and working on the Blazblue II 3DS reveiw. I hope that it can, and I do think that it likely will.

@TBD I'm loving the fact that the Nintendo only fans will now have beautiful HD graphics on their system and will likely stop getting gimped versions of current gen games. This isn't a next generation system like it was thought it might be, and I just don't see anything that is going to make Xbox/PS3 fan run out and buy this to play many of the same games they can play on the other consoles - which are quickly offering unique controls schemes themselves.

There is really some unique and innovative technology here at work, but the competition is dead-on with iPad and other tablets, and even with Vita as well. I think that Wii U will definitely find it's niche though, and I'm sure that the games will be incredible.

I've been running some presentation video against trailers of the same games on the PS3/360 (Dirt, Ninja Gaiden 3) and the graphics do seem to be lower quality from the others.

I'm at least intrigued by the concept, but I can't really see it being used for much. I don't have a problems sharing a TV and the fact you can only have one of these controllers connected at a time seriously hampers multiplayer aspects. Also seems the rumours of it merely being onpar with the Xbox 360 were true, which is unfortunate, as it's likely Microsoft and Sony will reveal new systems next year that are even more powerful, leaving the Wii out of the third party ports again.

Hardly true. It's been confirmed that the footage shown is not footage of games working on the console- but rather 360 and PS3.

Then we have Darksiders II developers confirming that the console is "obviously more powerful than both 360 and PS3".

Put together the fact that it's been confirmed that the footage of that "garden" demo came from early dev kits, we basically have yet to see what games will actually look like.

But I'm more intrigued by the concept, just as you.

I agree. Let us forget about "hardcore" and "casual" and hope for some great, innovative games.

The controller looks horrible. Just horrible. I cannot imagine playing console games with a flat controller that feels like a tablet. I hope they have some grips or something to make AT LEAST playable. Also, the touch screen is a stylus-operated resistive touchscreen. It's basically a giant DS touch screen screen. So, yes I am disappointed.

There are grips on the bottom, and there is a large lip running across the entire length of the back. It looks like it nestles over your fingers. Scroll about half way through this story to see the back. ...

This all sounds like when the Wii was first named and everyone ranted. Do you see where it's at now? Certainly not at the bottom of the barrel. They could've called it the Stream, the Super Wii, or the Willie and it would still have awesome games coming for it. This is all jumping the gun, and it supports my view that "hardcore" fans will bash Nintendo no matter what they do. If you really hate this console, then don't buy it. But don't come crying to us reasonable fans when you find out how awesome Wii U will really become. Rant now, and you might regret it.

I think they'll rant about anything anyway I agree the name is stupid but I've been surprised before. Here's to hoping for more surprises

How can you be mad about the system itself? I am dissapointed by the name, but the technology so freaking amazing that I don't care about the name at all.

so basically, unless one is totally enamored with everything nintendo ever offers, one should just STFU?? also: why on earth would they regret a rant? what is nintendo going to do: not let them purchase a console because they posted a rant somewhere in the past? or are you going to be looking for the opportunity to go 'neener, neener, neener'?

i think the OP just let things get to him a wee bit and cut loose. but it wasn't obscene, it wasn't particularly insulting to anyone (unlike comments referring to his being 12 yrs old or having bad taste in video games). it happens. we'll all survive.
