Now I know how Sega Saturn users felt back in the day.

I picked up my Wii U during launch in November of 2012, and initially I was pretty happy with the console, despite some reservations (playing Arkham City or Assassins Creed III for the first time and watching the frame rate stutter was not reassuring)……..

But still, I was fulfilled with the Wii U at first, New Super Mario Bros. U was an enjoyable romp that I played through two or three times, and others like Tekken TT2 and Arkham City were awesome. But as February rolled around, and Pikmin 3 and Rayman Legends were pushed to the right, I kinda started regretting shoving out the 400 dollars for system.

Next came the great drought, from February to August of 2013, my Wii U gathered dust, packed away in a pelican case inside my work out room. I broke the system out twice during that timeframe for the newest Need For Speed: Most Wanted and Lego City Undercover (which rocked BTW).............but thats it. To add insult to injury, as I started to hear that EA and other developers / publishes were either scalling back their support for the system or axing it all together, I was kinda like, WTF Nintendo?

The second half of the year was better, starting in August with the releases of Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, and the Wind Waker: HD. However, now that I’ve completed Super Mario 3D World………..my Wii U is in hibernation again, gathering dust…………..it’s a pretty shitty deal when a console goes a month or three without anything exciting to speak of or looking to.

It's just like c’mon, I want to play Bioshock Infinite, the last Tomb Raider,……….Nintendo, give me some racing games, some third person action and FPS games,……be willing to take some chances like you did back in the SNES and N64 days.

Closing comments, I recently bought a Playstation 4, and I already feel like it was worth my money (more so than the Wii U)……you can tell the hardware has some actual “oomph” and power behind it, and most importantly, I can look to the release schedule in the next 4 or 5 months and I know I’ll be happy............right now Resogun, Flower, Need for Speed: Rivals, and Killzone SF, in January I’ll have Tomb Raider (which is amazing and will be again) and in March I have Metal Gear Solid V and Infamous: Second Son………………………………….seriously, you can’t even blame the third pary developers, they are trying to survive fiscally like everybody else, and if developers are focusing their games on the standards set by the PS4, Xbox One, and current PC gaming specs, why are they going to shoot over crappy ports or drastically strip down their games so it can run on the Wii U at 20 frames per a second?, and not have it sell well?

Nintendo, I’ll always love you for your games, both past and present, nobody does it like you, but I feel let down with the Wii U.

should've bought Monster Hunter 3U, would have done a perfect job filling in months waiting for another big game.

I actually downloaded the demo of Monster Hunter 3U early last year, nothing against it, but it’s just not my kind of game, it didn’t draw my interest, but I hear you, everybody says it’s a bit time sink.

Bottom line, Nintendo makes some incredible experiences, but they need some third party support badly, and a wider variety of games (sports, FPS, racing games)…...

I only fear third party support will get worse as more developers gear there games for the PS4, Xbox One, and current PC standards. I know graphics aren’t everything, and Nintendo can do hell of a lot with a little, but I kinda feel like they shot themselves in the foot by making the Wii U have more in common with the last gen (PS3 and X360) from a hardware perspective then the new consoles and current PC standards.

I buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games...every fan of Nintendo usually says the same thing. 3rd Party like Monster Hunter is just icing. But yeah MH's demo was crap, lol

You are long overdue for a gaming PC. Treat yourself to one and never look back.

Otherwise, no. Actually... I'm not even sure what I just read. BioShock Infinite? Really? As in, for real? Yuck. Couldn't have chosen worse examples for me. As for PS4, I don't know what I'd even play. The launch lineup is gross (Killzone... what can you even say) outside of some solid multiplatform releases. To each their own, right?

The Wii U is exactly the gaming console I need in my life, at this point. I don't need to play all day, every day and I sure as hell don't need to choke down some half-assed gameplay to be told a story.

I'm not really disappointed by the Wii U, but (nowadays, at least) I can see why others would.

Although you'd be crazy to think this is it and Nintendo's gonna stop supporting/give up on the Wii U after it's built up a user base (no matter how small it is). That's exactly what Sega did with the 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast... Say, what happened after Sega did that?

Just for a little history, as a little one I grew up on the SNES and N64 (that’s where my nostalgia factor lies)………and after that it was the Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox 360, and the Wii (and now the Wii U and PS4).

As far as buying Nintendo system just for Nintendo games, back in the 1990’s, Nintendo did a better job of covering their bases IMO, as far as making sure different genres were supplied and that “all” types of gamers would be satisfied. I also think they did a better job of appealing to the late teen – adult crowd with their own developed and published titles.

The SNES rocked, and the N64, although it missed a lot of the PS1 titles, it still had strong third party support outside of RPG's......guys like Midway and Acclaim made a lot of exclusives for the N64, and the N64 had a decent library of cutting edge (for the time) action, racing, and sports titles. Even the Gamecube had some solid third party support, for the time, many of the non-exclusive, multi-platform titles had a Gamecube version.

The Wii has it’s wealth of games, but that was mostly because it was a phenomenon when it launched, by 2011 when the PS3 and X360 were still going strong, the Wii was in pretty dismal state (in comparison).

Now with the Wii U, again, it’s like the Sega Saturn, low install base, hardware that is a bit out of standards, and a consumer market which has plenty of other options.

Only thing I regret is buying the thing at launch, should have waited till Ultimate, but whatever. I'm fine with the system.

Yeah, I totally agree with you Mickey.

I am disappointed with the Wii U for the most part, but the worst thing Nintendo could do would be to cut support of the system after 2 ½ or 3 years and bring something else on the market. That kind of shit doomed Sega fast (as you stated). They (Nintendo) just need to do more in general (more games, more consumer awareness, more of an install base, etc).

I still loved my Dreamcast for that year and a half though!!!, nobody made easy to pick up action/arcade titles like Sega..

I'm happy with mine, I play it almost everyday. But while it's still has it's issues in terms of games and sales, Nintendo definitely won't give up on it. You give up, you admit to all those who mock you that they're right. And that's definitely not Nintendo's style! They'll continue to make great games for it no matter what critics or gamers or analysts say, and that's definitely better than giving up in my opinion.

I am really happy with my Wii U, love the backwards compatibility feature. I still have a huge back catalog of Wii games including Xenoblade. Also I will need to get a external hard drive soon because of all the downloadable games I have.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks... I have a PS3 and a Wii U and don't feel let down by either of them. Even the thin offerings of the Wii U VC help make the system worthwhile for me. But it does seem that especially nowadays, Nintendo is carving out a completely different market than the PS4 or XBox One, which is great, as both can then coexist legitimately. They don't have to "compete" persay. And the ports are only getting better... look at Deus Ex, with its great use of the gamepad. But for certain types of cinematic experiences in games, PS4 and Xbox One will be the better option sometimes. But we can have both! Everything's gonna be ok!

The one thing that I do love about the Wii U (where Sony and Microsoft are behind IMO) is in regards to external hard drive support. I know Microsoft / Xbox One is promising limited support and with the PS4 you CAN open the system up and replace it the HD if it meets size reqs, but I still like Nintendo's method the best.......

Buy a 2 TB or more HD and you’ll never have to own a physical copy again (or feel like an donkey at Gamestop). Plus it's just nice loading your system up and having everything on display at once.

I can kinda see why, but that's what the indies are for I assume. I literally have 2 unfinished games and everything else I could put more into easily right now, and I STILL have somehow not touched Trine 2.

Though at the same time, I'm not gonna pretend having other gaming systems doesn't help, but I think most hardcore gamers should have more than one still relevant gaming system (unless they buy an older one just to catch up on a bunch of games or something) if they want to enjoy a large variety of gaming, and while next year will likely change that, Nintendo's not done an ideal job with that so far with Wii U. But at the same time, I hate the mentaility of "well that was a game everyone (including myself) agrees is a GOTY Contender, OH WELL I BEAT IT TIME TO STOP PLAYING IT!1!!"

My biggest regret is buying the Wii U at launch. I should have waited till now to get one for the obvious reasons the price drop, the library. Its not bad but honestly I only play it to play Nintendo games. Other third party games I have a PS4 and an XBox 360 to play them on. I have thought of selling my Wii U cause honestly its been collecting dust ever since I completed Ducktales: Remastered. Thing is though I know that it will get alot of use once MK8 comes out and once I do sell it if I did some great game will come along and I will be mad at myself for selling it.

Tasuki, I have the same thoughts exactly, I shouldn’t have bought it at launch (and no, I don’t think I’ll have the same feelings about the PS4)……..

I have also thought about selling it, but like you, I know that when the next Mario Kart or Legend of Zelda game hits (or even more so, if they make a new Star Fox or F-Zero), I would be regretting my choice………….still, I’m not sure if three or four exclusives a year justified the entry price,…….it’s more to do with the fact that I already have it (the Wii U).

Another "I'm dissatisfied with Wii U" thread...... Whoopee! Go buy a PS4 or an Xbone if you need a bigger library of games.... Oh wait yea. The Wii U is completely backwards compatible. The other next gens ain't and the Wii U is completely free to play multiplayer online, the others ain't. If your not happy saving money and being able to play a huge library readily available to you then move on. Buy a new system. Have fun.

As someone who bought my Wii U back in September.. I'm really happy with it. Games like Pikmin keep me coming back with the great DLC and I'm happy with the 5 other titles I have as well. Then again.. I loved my Sega Saturn and was happy as could be with it's games. I loved that system.

Of course, it really comes down to where you are in your life and what you want out of gaming. After I had kids, I reached a crisis because my PS3 became impractical due to the lack of truly solid family oriented titles and not enough attention to the kind of classic gameplay you want to raise young gamers on. The Wii is a great all-purpose console, but still didn't allow me to get around to playing the games that are inappropriate for kids. Despite the DS,3DS, and 2DS being some of the best kid-friendly systems ever made, are too isolating to really be appropriate for family use.

The Wii U came around at the perfect time for me. Through new releases and backwards compatibility, it offers a treasure trove of classic games for the whole family. Then there's the ability to scratch the serious gaming itch far more conveniently and efficiently than I previously imagined. With the Gamepad, an opportunity to keep even the youngest occupied and involved rather than ignored. Dual screen multiplayer solving the long-standing dilemma with playing together on the same couch without splitting the screen. (Now even my wife wants to play stuff like CoD when the opportunity arises.). Inventory and map management becoming drastically more tolerable. The Wii U has enhanced my gaming hobby.

I know the Wii U could use some more games, but I'm pretty confident in the lineup Nintendo has released and/or announced holding up to just about any of their previous consoles, all said. Either way, gaming as a hobby is less of priority in my life (out of necessity, of course) and will only be properly maintained if a platform offers the convenience and flexibility I need. Thankfully Wii U does.
