I think you just have to play the board game twice before you unlock the ability to earn tickets and unlock the mini games. But then you still have to buy the mini games with tickets you earn. You can earn them in the mini games, but the board game is by far the fastest way to earn them, especially if you use 4 amiibo at once.
And yes, it is far from the worst thing ever. I play with my four-year-old son and he loves it. Even my one-year-old gets a kick out of tapping the amiibo for us. It is really good family game.
