So i finally got my beloved copy of Smash bros and my AMIIBO in the post. I hurriedly opened them and set about building my AMIIBO. After an hour or so of leveling up i now was ready to pit 'LINK' into the arena of battle...........then................then i discovered that you cannot actually control the AMIIBO "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA FUUUUUUUUU##############" seriously what the hell is the point of them, They even led you to believe this was the case in the TV adverts. To me this makes the whole thing absolutely pointless especially when Activisions Skylanders has had this down for a couple of years now. Nintendo 100% dropped the ball here. In their own words they state that they wish for you to bond and become friends with your AMIIBO, well if i could actually use him rather than just watch him i would and i would also buy more of them but now i wont.
No you cannot, they can accompany you as a team member or you can watch them fight the computer whilst being computer controlled but you cannot directly control them as a character yourself.

Why would you? You can already play as about every Nintendo character there is. It's not that difficult to look up some info on the amiibo. It's been known for a long time that amiibo do not function the same as Skylanders/Disney Infinity figurines. They are not DLC; you buy a neat Nintendo figurine, and it happens to be to interact with your game.
Yeah, I don't understand why everyone wants that. Storing custom builds is the only practical use I can think of, and if that were all amiibo did, they'd be pretty useless for people who don't play the game at other houses. I honestly like their current use in Smash way better than just "controlling" them, which would add nothing.
You control the amiibo FP in Smash by training it by learning it, and by tweaking it.
This. You are basically training and customizing a CPU. We already knew this before Smash Bros. even came out. I think they're going to be usable in Mario Party 10, too. Otherwise they are just unlocking costumes in Mario Kart 8, stuff in Hyrule Warriors, and a Namco airplane game for New 3DS. They are supposed to be used for a handful of other software in the future. This is all the info I have.

I get your frustration of spending money on something you thought would be there but wasn't.
However, playing as the Amiibo, as some have already stated, is pointless since you can already play as every character. They're all available in the game.
Amiibos can be used in multiple games though. So if you own Hyrule Warriors or Mario Kart 8 you can unlock some fun stuff in those games as well.
Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

Another person who wants to play as their amiibo for some reason. I really don't get why so many people fail to see how this makes absolutely no sense. Either they're all under 12, or they are just beyond help. Those are the only reasons I can think of that it would make sense in someone's mind to spend $13 to do something you can already do in the game by simply picking the character.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Do Nintendo really say they want you to make friends with your Amiibo?

People have all kinds of friends, if you know what I mean
Well to answer many of you who seem to think it odd that myself and pretty much everybody else i have asked about this apart from you guys of course wants to control their AMIIBO is because i assumed wrongly that you could train them into a super leveled fighter, Even if you could only fight them against other AMIIBO it would certainly be very cool for online and it would give credibility to the point of bothering to actual bother to level them up. I find it odd that you seem to think its cool to train something you cannot essentially do anything with, To me that is ridiculous, yes you can control these fighters in the game obviously but i thought you would be able to control powered up versions and like i said there are tons of annoyed people everywhere that thought the same. Im gonna be honest i didnt do any pre-reading into the uses of AMIIBO like somebody stated they had as it seemed pretty obvious that they would be controllable.

But if you had a levelled up Amiibo which you fight as and then fight someone elses levelled up Amiibo then wouldn't it be exactly the same as normal Smash?
Look at it this way: You train your amiibo as your companion. It starts out as your student, so to speak, and learns after you, taking after some of your playstyles and moves. Then, it will eventually get better than you, where you should then try and learn to beat it. And then that cycle will repeat, ultimately letting you become a better and better smash player.
It says it right there, on the back of the box. They even link to their site: nintendo.com/amiibo where they are explained in-depth. I also don't understand what playing as a level 50 amiibo would do that a regular character cannot do. Playing as a level 50 character against another level 50 character would be essentially the same as playing as a two regular characters against each other.
The whole "powered up" versions thing is ALSO covered in-game. It's called custom options.
Let me explain to you what the point of amiibo is in this game. The point is to have a CPU with more advanced AI that actually LEARNS the way you play and eventually be able to copy your fighting style, and learn how to counter you. A high level amiibo will be a much harder opponent than a level 9 CPU. This I think is pretty freakin cool.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Never, EVER, consider something as obvious until you've actually confirmed it.
Now, about your idea of using amiibo: that would be seriously unfair. Smash is a fighter, which means good balancing is a core aspect, and making characters stronger doesn't belong there. The only way for you to "level up" would be to get better with your character, like everybody else in the world is required to.
