I don't think it will compete with the Wii U, but the Wii U's successor could easily be competing with the Amazon Fire TV 2. As it is, Nintendo is somewhere between the more dedicated gaming machines like the PS4 and XBox, but not as casual as something like the Ouya. If Amazon really tries they might be able to enter the same league as the Wii U but I don't see that happening.

Technology moves pretty fast. They might be able to offer a Wii U like system in terms of power at a low price at the end of the Wii U's life cycle- but then Nintendo will have it's next gen system in the works, which will probably be about 2x as powerful as the current gen Sony/MSFT type systems (in roughly 2018).

Don't know anything about this other than it has Netflix which Sony managed ot screw up on PS TV yesterday (only 3 streaming apps for a "TV" device, not even Youtube, really?) but since I brought this thread back to life - still would like to change the title but oh well - might as well add this in there. And PS TV which only seems to be competition for Vita at the moment, and that's not aiming very high. If Wii U ever starts losing customers to PS TV it really is game over.

I don't see Nexus Player beng a big seller, I'm not even sure what it is exactly, but I still see Fire TV Gamer Ed. as Wii U competition only b/c Amazon has it front and center on their website, lots and lots of people shop on Amazon, and Amazon still doesn't sell Wii U directly. I wonder if Amazon will ever release Fire TV #s?

That is interesting - looks like it is based on the long delayed good Intel Atom. (Pretty good 4 core x86 processor in that sort of form factor is very interesting). Presuming you can be rid of Android on it without too much fuss.

Thank you. Had I gone in and edited the 1st post like I had planned too I probably should have figured that out.

I don't see these Streaming devices over taking as people's main source of gaming. Consoles will be preferred for gaming, I don't think that many gamers are interested in Streaming their games either. So even if the Streaming devices sell better than Wii U, the real test would be if these devices gaming sides start selling more games at premium prices, which is different than making more money. Making more money will probably be from Free-to-Pay stuff while selling more games at premium prices would show an actual shift in the industry.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

You know microconsoles like OUYA, and Amazon Fire I have never seen as competitors to a Wii U or PS4 or even Xbox One. I see them as their own kind of thing. They seemed to me be more aimed at more of the gamers that only play Angry Birds or Candy Crush for example or people who just like Indie games, or as a companion for their Wii U/PS4/Xbox One like I did with the OUYA.

I really can't see someone saying "You know what I was going to get a PS4 for games like Destiny, GTA V etc but hot damn I went with the Amazon Fire instead." To me it makes about sense as a truck guy passing over a Dodge Ram to buy a Geo Metro.

These types of boxes will get the person that wants a media box that plays some games. However they mean very little to the person that is looking for a machine that is dedicated to gaming and a media center... which would be the majority of gaming enthusiasts. For the families the WiiU is still viable once they accept that the Wii is dead.

So 3 1/2 years later, Wii U is dead, Amazon Fire TV is still a thing. Maybe there will be a $150 SwitchTV in another 3 1/2 years that I can come back here and post about how Ntineod copied Amazon.
