@Maelstrom

uh......you did watch the trailer right. If I'm not mistaken there was a gameplay footage of a three on three battle which is clearly turned based. you see a flash of it at the 25 second mark, than at 38 seconds we something that looks similar, than we see a final showing at one minute and 1 second mark

edit:

The 3D platformer is agame called Oliver and SPike and it seems Amazon either bought the IP or the studio.

So the controller was real, after all

Well, it seems the "Amazon game console" was real after all, everyone was just wrong about what it was.

I might purchase one but wait a bit and make sure it's not Ouya 2.0

As far as games, I have a Galaxy Tab that I bought nearly two years ago. It collects dust for the most part-haven't used it since Nov. I use my Wii U 60-80 hours per month. And my 3ds about that much. Tablet games only hold my interest for maybe a few minutes- and I have next to zero desire to come back to them.

but i can't really see this as a gaming alternative for anyone who already has a console

I see it more as competition for people who dont own a Wi U, not saying people who already own a Wi U will trade it in for a FireTV. And last time I checked there were a lot more people who DIDN'T own a Wii U than did.

I probably should have said originally I'm only viewing this from a US perspective, I'm not sure if Amazon even exists in Japan or how big Kindle is in the UK + EU. In the US Amazon and Kindle are both big, maybe not McDonalds, Coke or Walmart name recognition big, but I bet similar between Amazon and Nintendo. I've already complained that Amazon not carrying Wii U is hurting Wii U sales, this just can't help.

And clearly FireTV isn't a Wii U competitor like PS4 or X1, but a tablet or smartphone isn't a 3DS or Vita competitor either from a hardware perspective, yet Nintendo has said smartphones hurt 3DS games sales. If $139 tv console hardware becomes ubiquitous it does become competition for tv gaming money.

Look at all the indie games on Wii U, it's practically all Nintendo has been promoting for Wii U the past month. I don't know if FireTV can play them, but I bet it can play similar games. Not MK8 or SSB, but PS4 and X1 don't have them either, but I think we can all agree those consoles are still competitors w/o them. So why not FireTV?

1 reason it isn't, yet - to keep things balanced and in perspective - and I don't know why or how long it will last, but it is being promoted as a tv streaming app, the game controller is hard to find on the FireTV Amazon page and gaming is listed last. I suppose Amazon wants its millions of Kindle owners to buy this as "apps" for tv before scaring them off as a gaming console. That and a $139 bundle isn't as nice as a $99 box w/ remote. I think I agree w/ that marketing decision. Gamers will find it, soccer moms just want Amazon Prime and a simple to use remote.

If by Christmas it's a $99 gaming machine w/ controller, then its game on. Hopefully by then Wi U will be selling well and nobody will care, but if SSB gets delayed to 2015, along w/ X and Zelda HD, well it could get ugly.

This thing in competition with the Wii U dont make me laugh. That's like saying tablets and phones are in direct competition with the 3DS and Vita, which they aren't

If anything this Fire thing would be in competition with the Roku or maybe even cable companies.

I bought my Tab 2 7" about 2 years ago also. I played Puzzle and Dragons about a month, and a few other games about a month as well. When they're free you dont have to play them much to get your money's worth, as long as it enjoyable. Currently playing "Need a Hero". None of them are real games, all time wasters. I'm always on my tablet though for email and internet. If my Wii U Gamepad worked over my entire homes Wi-Fi, my Wii U is in the basement and the Gamepad won't work thru the floor, I might have traded my Tab 2 in. But it doesn't.

But they are indirectly. I don't like it but I know quite a few people who don't have handhelds due to phones and tablets just being good enough.

Nintendo said they were 5 FIVE years ago. If you aren't going take their word for it you surely aren't going to listen to anything I have to say on the matter.

Did I mention this was FIVE years ago that Nintendo already thought of the iPhone as competition?

Nobody claimed they were in direct competition. It is competing though.
You also gave a REALLY BAD example by the way. Are you claiming that ppl dont play games on their phones? I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here.Go look up Nintendo's 3DS sales numbers and see how smartphones have affected their handheld sales this gen.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

My last thought for the night -

FireTV < Wii U < PS4/X1 < PC

Everybody who games on a platform w/ superior "specs" always says the lower spec system isn't competition. Of course the FireTV isn't a Wi U competitor. Until it proves it is. And yes, I think smartphones and tablets are 3DS and Vita competitors. They compete for handheld playing time and money.
If and when Amazon decides to promote this as a "home gaming console" competitor, rather than a streaming box w/ game controller sold separately, then I think they have the muscle, money and clout to make it be one. And they've spent WAY too much money on game personnel to not make it a gaming console at some point. Thanks to @shingi_70

Remember when Xbox joined the fray? It didn't do too well. Xbox360 did better. Ask Sony.

Simple fact is that if it plays games then it is competition to some degree. All these companies want our money and they will all compete to get it. All that's left to do is see if it becomes a true contender.

Amazon game studios? Lol. Rather have Nintendos "rehashes" than amazons quick buck rehashing of existing genres.

It actually looks pretty good, IMO. Ouya probably could have been a good little console, too, but it just doesn't haven't the support that Amazon can bring. I guess we'll see how it goes. This totally beats the hell out of Roku and Apple, though.

It technically is competing for people's money, but that goes for any device.

I love my Kindle, but I have the Paperwhite, not the Fire tablet. My Kindle is for reading books and nothing else. Their tablet offerings and this don't really interest me at the current time.

Just an idea here, what if Amazon made this a subscription based service and for one monthly rate you could play all of Amazon's in house developed games? Then would anyone have bit more peaked interest?
