@Artwark
If the power goes out while the console is writing save data? For that second or so? Then yeah, it might corrupt that particular save. But we're talking astronomically bad luck for that to happen. Unlikely. Plus the cost of it is fairly small, I don't know about you but the only save I'd really panic about would be the save on Pokemon Y. Mostly because there are some 'mons on there that I've had since Pokemon Pearl in 2007!

As for firmware updates, well the only time your console is vulnerable is while it's actually updating. Through most of the update process there's no risk because it's just downloading the update. We're talking about 20 or so updates over the last two years where there's maybe around a minute or so of a window for a power outage to brick the system. So what, a 30min window? So do the maths, what is that, a 30 in a million chance that a random, single power outage would brick your Wii U. At which point you could probably get Nintendo to fix it for you anyways.

So yeah, a UPS is more safe.... but we're talking astronomical odds of something bad happen especially if you have it behind a surge protector and make a point of turning it off during storms when most power failures tend to occur. Do yourself a favour, save your money.

It's not too late at all, even if it's next year. There are many great games right now and many more coming in 2015. Also, it's a given that the online-heavy games like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros will be alive and kicking for years. You won't miss out.

Now is just as good of time as ever. There's plenty of great games out, to choose from. Anyone buying one now would have alot harder of a time actually affording all the good games, rather than finding any good games. I've had mine since launch, and I've always thought it was worth buying.

Why you should be late?

The problem is when you get a console too early.... now instead you can choose only the best games....

I can kinda see there's a legitimate question hidden in your original comment somewhere, but the way you asked it just appears to be incoherent. You've "missed out on a lot of games"?? You do realise those are still available right? It's never too late to buy a console. Unless maybe if it's been replaced by a new one that's backwards compatible.
As for console lifecycle, my feeling is that this one will last quite a while. I'm skeptical of how much longer the cost of developing AAA games will remain feasible. Combine that with the fact that more and more people are going handheld and mobile, I struggle to see the same demand for a playstation 5. I think we'll have the ps4 and xbox1 for about a decade. If Nintendo do anything more in the console market in the next 5 years, I bet it'll be more of an upgrade than a new console. Like with the New 3DS.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

I probably missed out on a lot of games and I've been wondering if I'm too late to get the Wii U..... cause I can only get it around next year seeing that I just started job training and all......I only hope that it doesn't end up like the Wii where I bought the system and by next year, the next gen system happened.

I mean, it's not too late to get the system, but you'll have to go through some pretty rigorous hazing rituals.

Yes, it is too late to buy a Wii U. You will be kicked out of life if you even try to purchase one. Shame on you.

Seriously.... right now is probably the best time to buy one. The games are here and you have a fair selection now. I bought mine in August 2013, and I wish I had waited another year.

IMO, here are some recent eShop titles that beat just about all on that list, except Shovel Knight:

  • Stealh Inc. 2 (probably the best Wii U game implementation on the eShop)
  • SteamWorld Dig
  • Art of Balance
  • Teslagrad
  • The Swapper
  • Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails
  • Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
  • Child of Light
  • Stick it to the Man!

I just picked up a new 3DS, and i'm planning on picking up a Wii U early next year. Honestly, I think now's an ideal time to pick up a Wii U, it's just kicking in to gear now imo. You'll have a backlog of games like Smash, Kart, Pikmin, DK, Mario 3D World, Wind Waker (HD), Wonderful 101, etc...to get through, then another 12 1st party titles next year including Zelda, Star Fox, Splatoon, Yoshi, Captain Toad and Xenoblade...and as an educated guess, I reckon 2016 will be just as strong as 2015 is looking...with Metroid, 3D Mario, and Animal Crossing plus others on the horizon.

I still believe we won't see a successor home console until 2018. Nintendo isn't Microsoft or Sony...they're a dedicated gaming company...it's all they do, and they can't afford to ditch their home console after only 3 years (particularly considering how slow they've been to release new software this cycle)..

DuckTales Remastered is rubbish totally misses the point removes the best parts and totally messes up the physics meaning it is necessary to stop all the time.

(Similar to Ubisoft and Flashback but not quite as bad).

I was having the same thoughts as yourself, wondering if I should just wait until the next console arrives and buy the must have WiiU games then if I still want them. As it is there's still plenty of games on the Wii and older systems that I'm still playing. Anyhow, I'll have a WiiiU by Xmas. Mario Kart 8 just looks so good, I want to be playing that ASAP. I wonder if the WiiU might be quite collectible in 20 years time like the Dreamcast etc is?

FWIW, the Wii U has now sold approximately number of units in the US that the Dreamcast sold in the US during its whole lifetime.

About the eShop stuffs from a few posts back. I can only talk about what I've played, so I'll start by saying that Ducktales is pretty forgettable. It's not a great remaster, I got it a quite a while after launch and even then there were bugs and the game crashed a couple of times. Worse still it just kinda bland and lifeless, needless to say I wouldn't recommend it. Little Inferno is a nice little arty thing, was nice when the Wii U was new and there wasn't much else but I'm not sure I'd push people in that direction now. Child of Light? Well it's great and I reckon I got most of the way through it but it got a bit stale so I gave up on it. It's solid and I'm sure if I was into it I would have a different opinion but I wouldn't rate it highly because... eh...

On the other end of the spectrum Shovel Knight is fantastic and everyone should download it. SteamWorld Dig is at about the same level. For both of them if you have a 3DS, Wii U or PC get a copy and enjoy them because they're great. I'd say the same for Bit Trip Runner 2. I'm sure there's more great stuff but that's the only stuff I'd recommend to anyone which I've actually played.

Yup I was thinking about getting a Dreamcast a while back but it's waaaaaay too expensive here - I'm in Australia. I've still got my Gamecube and all my games tho so can't complain.
