Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World are 60 FPS....
Oh really? That's awesome. I know they may not be the most "graphically intensive" of titles, but they certainly seem to more than make up for it in aesthetics and such. Couple the good art with silky smooth 60FPS and I'm a happy camper.
Agreed. I'm long past the point of even remotely caring about the technical quality of graphics (heck. I'm long past the point of caring of even discussing that point). Just give me a nice framerate and a good art style, that's all I could want for how a game looks.
DK also ran at 60fps. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the first party games have pushed it that far because I haven't really noticed it. Well I think I do notice it drop to what I assume is 30fps sometimes in Wii Sports Club Golf if you hit the ball into the trees. Other than that the whole first party Wii U experience has been silk.

I don't think companies say, well we could run at 60 fps but lets not. With bigger game more technology is used which means sacrifices elsewhere (normally fps as 30 is considered good enough)
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Well no, in a way your right in that It's more of the reverse. However in the end the reverse is the same because they're still choosing not to aim for it. Usually when a game is 60fps the devs have deliberately said "we're going for 60fps with this game". Whenever they add an effect or bump up the resolution they look at what it does to the framerate. Then they choose whether they don't do that new thing, improve the engine more or pull back on something else.
Basically you don't get 60fps by accident especially with a big AAA game. So effectively when a game isn't 60fps somewhere along the line someone didn't decide to aim for 60fps. Instead putting the target at 30fps or just bumbling along in the hopes that the end product isn't too bad.

The suits at the top of some of these publishers dictate a lot of how their AAA games look. They want a look that's always very leading edge and marketable for TV ads where they spend good money to promote the game to sell millions. so a certain certain optimum graphical presentation is likely to take priority over frame rate optimization among other things (online bugs), and then game directors have to just do what they can to get the best playability. This is particularly true for new/non-franchise IP that doesn't yet have brand power.

Especially when almost all of the footage people are likely to see of the game before they buy it will be at 30fps.

All 1st Party Wii U games have been 60FPS so far, I expect this trend to continue. That said as a PC gamer Fps doesn't bother me in the slightest as long as its consistant.
