A Game like Advance Wars that is entirely ruled by Multiplayer should have gotten the Online Treatment.
Don't get me wrong, Advance Wars is amazing, bought it a day ago and I absolutely LOVE it, but this is probably one of those games where Nintendo should have took the time to add in Online Multiplayer.
You know if this was any other Company they would have done exactly that, why didn't Nintendo?
I think there was an example of a popular old game on XBLA (I wanna say it was Golden Axe) where people constantly complained that it should have online and then when it came out no one played it online.
doesn't mean there should have been any. You'd see it many times on Xbox or PS3.
Street Fighter, Xmen, Marvel Vs Capcom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ^ Golden Axe, and the like have all seen re-releases with Online mode attached to it.
Advance Wars should have had some sort of Online implemented to it.

VC games aren't re-releases though, they're just ports.

They may have something in the works. I mean, they could easily patch the game, and let you do online. The gameboy advance games are just coming to Wii U's virtual console. Nintendo know's many of them have a multiplayer component so lets just wait and see what's up.

You know what these ports didn't have when they originally released?
Save States and In game Manuals.
Guess what the Virtual console versions have.
Nintendo's made it clear that these games are mostly single player. Also, even if they did have online, would it have really been worth it? Or would one just play online for like a month and move on? Nintendo doesn't gain much from adding online and no, you don't see it on "many" other games.

You can definitely have online multiplayer even though it's in a EMU. But they would have ad code to the game to ad online features. Which wouldn't make it a port anymore. Unlike the manuals etc. which can just be put straight in to the EMU without changing the games code (since it's a separate feature).

Again, what does Nintendo gain from this? Most of these arguments only look at how the consumer alone benefits from such decisions, but that alone does NOT give a business a good incentive to do it

In any case.
What would Nintendo gain from this? Uh...Consumer faith perhaps? I'm certain plenty of users would be happy to know that a Classic game like Advance Wars would have Online, Also with Nintendo Wifi Connection going away that Days of Ruin Game would not be up for long so Fans would naturally be glad to know that there is another Advance Wars (although dated) that has Online.
It would also strengthen relations with 3rd parties and consumers to know that Nintendo isn't afraid of taking the Online route which they have seemed to opt out in many times before (with games like Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land, Star Fox 64 3D, and New Super Mario Bros. WiiU being major let downs for people with a lack of Online Multiplayer).
The difference between putting this game Online and the Megadrive version of Street Fighter II on Wii is that the WiiU has a stable Online Community (Miiverse) and matches can be easily set up this time around rather than taking it to chance to see if anyone is actually online, this was true for most Online games for Wii that WASN'T Mario Kart.
Sometimes consumers ask for too much, and online in many games is one such thing. It's not necessary and consumers will buy this game if they really want to.

They wouldn't. But it's not like that has stopped them before. They could do it just for the sake of fan-service. We got a new Sin & Punishment on Wii, which sold very poorly.
