Topic: Accessories the Wii U needs

I love the Wii U controller and how we now have use of a controller besides the use of the Wiimote/Nunchuk, its all great. I was thinking though it would be great if Nintendo also made some other accessories to make an awesome experience even greater. One thing that I was thinking about is a Wii U Controller connection extender, it would be neat if I could buy some sort of add on that made it so that I could go further away from the system, with my controller I when I cross through my bedroom door it cuts out because of distance, so I can't play it in bed like I would like to. I'd also love other inventive products to make the experience even better.

What sort of accessories would you have Nintendo create if you could have a wishlist? (I would hope that this topic can remain positive and fun rather then some of the negative ones that I've seen lately about Nintendo's failings.)

The wireless repeater idea is decent but the problem with it is the same as the problem you're having already. Bandwidth. If you set it up as a repeater it could be done and it's basically just using 5Ghz WiFi so it would be fairly cheap. Problem is when you use a repeater you halve the bandwidth available. This is the same reason why I don't think we'll see the dual-gamepad idea anytime soon. I'm sure they have the headroom for it but it would definitely perform worse with it.

The other way you could do it would be if you used your actual network and then just put a second "Wii U Access Point" in a second room. That would work and if you set it up correctly would work very well indeed. The problem though is that the 2.4Ghz WiFi most people are going to use to connect to their network is likely not enough. You'd need to make sure people were using the LAN adapter. After you'd done that you'd also need to make sure that the connection between the Wii U and that access point was reasonable, something above around 30Mbps. I don't think they would release a product with that many variables. Other companies would, Nintendo wouldn't.

As for what I want to see... well they gave me what I wanted on the Wii when they released the Pro Controller. I always wanted a Classic Controller with Rumble that was properly wireless. They delivered. Now? I wouldn't mind a series of Retro Controllers. SNES, NES, Gamecube, N64 etc, etc. When the Virtual Console picks up a bit maybe....

I want a accessorie that would let the Wii U(not the gamepad charger) charge the gamepad while I'm playing. That would solve a lot of peoples problems with battery life. Also maybe a keyboard and mouse that would connect to the Wii U like how the Wii Fit Meter does but only can be used on the internet browser. It would help some people who are more used to PC controls.

Now that I have the bigger Gamepad battery an external battery charger would be great so I could have one in reserve for extended play sessions. Seems a shame to just put the stock battery in a box...

Actually bluetooth and USB keyboard support in general would be nice... unless it does already. Either way it's less of a big deal than it was with previous consoles given that the Wii U has an on-screen keyboard built in. Everyone's used to touch-screen keyboards and navigating with touch controls these days, maybe even more than KB + Mouse.

I also thought about how cool it'd be to have a GamePad repeater yesterday. Now i'm scared.

they could just make a Nintendo Wireless repeater and along with making the gamepad range better include wifi connections and 3DS local play on this repeater deal. it'd be the best videogame accessory since the N64 tranfer pack(in my opinion it was one of the best accessories ever)

I'd like it if nintendo did something like Xbox (please don't flame me lol) where they could add an accessory where a headset could be used on the Wii U pro controllers and also add cross game chat....

I'd actually rather see nintendo work on the Wii U's online capabilities first before they start on the accessories. I'd love to see the ability to join in on a game when a friend gets on, Wii Chat U needs to be better at connecting to the other party, there needs to be a better indicator to tell you when friends and messages show up rather then a blinking blue light that is most of the time out of sight. I'd also like to see a party system implemented. Once that is working properly then the accessories can cone rolling out.

Would a repeater really be necessary or could they just produce something to amplify the signal? I'm not very good with computer hardware, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about and this wouldn't work. Either way, I'd like to be able to play my Wii U games in my bedroom upstairs. @skywake , you sound like you know what you're talking about. How hard do you think it would be for someone to come up with a simple hardware mod for this? I'd be willing to put in the work as long as it wouldn't require modifying my Wii U.

Yeah the ability to communicate online (both via text and voice) definitely needs to be improved upon on the Wii U. The messaging system in Miiverse is nice, but it's kind of a hassle to go to.

You know I really don't think nintendo needs any more accessories for its consoles to be honest, in fact it might even benefit from having one less on wii u; yes I do mean the screen controller.

Actually all you need is an accessory like a wireless router to plug into it that will broadcast a wider signal. Or even a jumper would work. You'd need the software to be compatible with the Wii and gamepad. This jumper would have to trick the Wii U into thinking it was the gamepad and the jumper could then be able to send and receive communications between the two. Its simple hardware and software and being a separate device it can actually be placed anywhere the signal becomes weak to boost the signal further. It can work.

Yup. My cousins have a range extension for Wi-Fi signals. You plug it into your outlet, and your router can reach there, then reach a bit further. That could work. You would just plug it in halfway down your hallway, and the signal would pick up where it left off. A small fraction of a second would be lost, but not enough to hinder anything.

@skywake
USB keyboards are already supported. I have a Logitech Wii keyboard, and it works with anything. I've tested it on the internet browser, and I think it works on Monster Hunter(haven't tested).

EDIT: You're better off using the GamePad for internet, though, unless they creat an optional setup that's reminiscent of how the Wii browser worked.

Seriously. As soon as I get the improved battery, I'll have everything. I think Nintendo needs to have less accessories this time around. Maybe have a headset that can plug right into the pro controller (like on the Xbox) or have a wireless headset (like you can get on PS). I don't play online very often, so it doesn't matter to me, but I know some people would like to see this.

Nice that it's supported but I think the fact that I hadn't bothered to test it says something. The GamePad has a good enough keyboard, no replacement for a proper keyboard but good enough for simple browsing.

As far as mods go it's probably one of the most doable ones you could do. That doesn't mean it's trivial and it would certainly require pulling the Wii U apart and potentially even making holes in the chassis. Though if you're into that, and I would strongly suggest against it if you don't know what you're doing, then it would be just a matter of plugging it in. Same is true on the GamePad side although there's a lot less room to play with as you might expect.

In theory Nintendo could release a USB dongle with an external antennae that significantly boosted the WiFi range. They could also allow you to use a third party 5Ghz WiFi adapter with a simple firmware update. Whether it would actually be worth the expense and effort is another story.....

Ok so i've been thinking and i remember mentioning on another post about an add on that I think the Wii U could really benefit from. I remember the Gamecube having an add on that played GB/GBA games and i got to thinking how awesome it would be if Nintendo had an attachment that attached to the back of the gamepad or hell even to a USB connection that would let us play GB/GBA/DS/3DS games. Imagine the instant library the Wii U would get! The Wii U would not only be backwards compatible but it would also be able to play all those games as well. I honestly think this alone would move units and increase sales dramatically. One can only wish...
