I bought my little brother a Wii U for Christmas, and I don't know what to do about extra controllers. Do I need to buy more, or do the ones for the Wii work? I play Nintendo, but mostly handhelds and I'm not really updated on the Wii U right now.
I'm sure someone will lock this thread as soon as I post, because that's always what seems to happen no matter what forum I go to, but maybe someone will answer before that happens. lol

Yes, regular Wii controllers work on your brother's new Wii U. It varies from game to game but, as long as you have Wii Remotes, you'll be fine.

Depending on the games you're going to play, you might need some Wii Motion Plus add-ons for your current controllers or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The Zelda and Metroid mingames in Nintendoland require Wii Motion Plus, for instance. There should be symbols on the top-right back of the game box that tells you what controllers you need.

Alright, I got him the Zelda bundle, so he won't be playing Nintendoland any time soon. They have the Wii Motion Plus and so do I.

You can do just about everything with just the stuff in the box. Most of the stuff that can't be done requires a WiiMote + Nunchuck. Some bits require two WiiMotes, some require Motion Plus, Wii Fit U requires a balance board. The only new not-in-box controller is the Pro Controller and personally I haven't encountered anything that really uses it much let alone demands it.

Right now you'll be more than fine with just WiiMotes + Motion Plus. However you might possibly want one or two Pro Controllers for Smash Bros/Mario Kart when they come out. Which may be anywhere upto 6 months from now.
