I feel like there might be a rule against just making a thread about someone's video, but whatever. OH NO THIS MIGHT OVERSHADOW ALL THESE OTHER WII U THREADS POPPING UP LATELY

If it is, lock it or whatever, but otherwise, I feel like this sums up the Wii U pretty dang well. The only console that wanted to still be a fun, video game console first by filling it with consistently high quality gameplay focused games that are fun but was poorly marketed and confused and underutilized its fascinating control gimmicks because the gaming world was deeply into automatic hatred for any and all control gimmicks and even Nintendo was clearly scared of that. Despite making the console focusing on control gimmicks. Nintendo Land is underappreciated.

THERE I SAID WORDS ABOUT THE CONSOLE THIS PART OF THE FORUM IS ABOUT, OK?! IT'S A DISCUSSION!

Also this a reminder that I did not play Smash 4 nearly as much as I should have.

THE WII U IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE WII U (by that I mean the Wii U is entirely replaced by the Switch more or less but I will still be playing it for quite some time as I have plenty I haven't gotten to yet)

In my mind, the 'no starting a new thread just to post a video' is primarily aimed at new sign-ups who it seems have only signed up to spam us with their youtube channels. Established members of the community can have a bit more slack.

I haven't watched the video yet.

I still love my Wii U, and it gets quite a bit of use. I agree that it was underappreciated and poorly marketed, but in my eyes, quality supersedes quantity in this case; most of the retail releases that I've played are very high quality. The only issue with that is, third party support pretty much died early on.

I believe the Wii U is a sorely underrated console that is made fun of too often. It's typically the target of hate simply because it didn't sell well, but I absolutely adore the system. That argument doesn't even make sense, the Game Cube used to be one of Nintendo's worst selling consoles but everybody loves the darn thing. I also hear people claim they regret buying a Wii U but I got mine in 2012 and I was incredibly happy that I did, it had an incredible library of games. Those claiming that there are "no games" on the Wii U are severely wrong. I could go on and on about stellar titles like Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and many others. Even underrated games like Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Paper Mario: Color Splash, Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, Wii Fit U and Game & Wario were all incredibly fun games. I actually wish that the gamepad functionality was utilized more often because the games that did use it were extremely clever and innovative; it saddens me we never got to see more. When I do finally get around to purchasing a Switch I'll very honestly miss the dual screen features of the Wii U, Miiverse, stylus controls, and Wii Remote compatibility. I hope that in the future the Wii U is seen as the Dreamcast of Nintendo, a great console with a library of excellent games that was never truly appreciated in its time.

Ive only had my Wii U for almost two years now. I held off on buying the system mainly because I never saw it in stores until Black Friday 2015. I rarely played my Wii but the Wii U pulled me back into all things Nintendo. I ended up buying all exclusives and have only completed about 7 games out of my 30 game u backlog. I love the u in fact I loved it so much that I purchased a 3ds a year ago and practically every exclusive on it is in my back log. The og psp was a letdown and I thought handheld gaming wasn't for me but I was wrong again. Now I have a switch and I'm almost exclusively playing Nintendo games on the Wii, yeah I ended up buying most exclusives for the og Wii as well over the past two year because I kind of ignored it last gen. My backlog is huge and consists of most of nintendos modern library that spans the day/3ds/Wii/Wii U and now the switch. Ive been gaming on playstation since the psone and skipped everything from the n64 onward but as Ive gotten older Ive become sick of modern gaming but since Ive avoided Nintendo for so long everything I've missed feels fresh and innovative. The u may be the system that has saved gaming for me and the switch seems to be just as great. I still love Sony exclusives but from here on out Nintendo consoles will always sit right next to my PlayStation although Nintendo has definitely been taking up most of time since I purchased my u 2 years ago.

The Wii U was mainly ignored because the market and 3rd parties knew it would flop, and Nintendo screwed up real bad with the marketing and message. While the Gamepad was useful in a few games, even Nintendo didn't really use it in a majority of games.

@TheLZdragon It almost to me seemed like it was a prototype for the Switch. It had the idea there with the gamepad just the marketing is what killed it.

I disagree with this. It's more accurate to say Switch focused on a single feature of the Wii U and improved it dramatically, leaving most of the stranger gameplay ideas to the side in favor of some focus on, ironically, Wii-like motion controls.

It is entirely bizarre that Super Mario Odyssey is a Switch game and Super Mario 3D World — a game that is actually perfect for pick up and play tabletop splitscreen — was on the Wii U, a system where the multiplayer options were confusing to say the least. I would enjoy a 3D World port even though I've already watched a bunch of let's plays of that game.

I think 3D World being a Wii U game — as well as the super confusing naming scheme with that and 3D Land — just speaks to the generally poor productivity of the Wii U era. 'Cause c'mon: Odyssey looks like a much better singleplayer game.

I don't regret skipping the Wii U at all — this even when I bought TPHD and both versions of Smash Bros. for their sound CDs. They're literally still sitting in my cabinet. It was cool that the system had Monster Hunter in the launch window, less cool that it was a version of the game from 3 years ago on Wii. I would have bought a Wii U if Nintendo had released a worthy new Metroid Prime game (not FF, which was on 3DS at that), a worthy new Paper Mario game (not CS), or a new Monster Hunter game like 4 Ultimate (Cross probably wouldn't have done it 'cause it was just a port, but I bought a second, new 3DS for 4U).

But I didn't, and by the time Zelda was finally out I could just buy (well, pre-order two months in advance) a Switch and future proof myself instead of replaying 3U, playing Bayonetta 1 & 2, and rummaging for scraps besides.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Great console with so many memories and great experiences. The only thing I wanted was even just a few more third party titles.

So sad that it lived such a short life. RIP asynchronous multiplayer.

I love my Switch and being able to take it anywhere with me. I love how much Nintendo is getting it right with their marketing this time. But certain features of the Wii U will definitely be missed.

In some ways, I feel like Nintendo is being forced to "grow up" just to survive. Miiverse had so much potential (like all my friends on Facebook actually want to see my posts on gaming...) and as much as I love the simple, slick UI of the Switch, I feel like it is missing a bit of that goofiness that is the Nintendo charm.

Anyway, good video. It was a great summary of where Nintendo went wrong and yet what made the Wii U so wonderfully unique.

(This is a copy/paste of a previous post of mine of a sort of eulogy I wrote late last year. Please forgive the length)

A hooded, black-robed figure walks into an old, dark warehouse. The warehouse is filled with what seem to be wooden crates of different sizes. They're carrying a wrapped bundle in their arms, but there is no hint as to what it is other than the power cord trailing on the ground from the bundle.

The figure reaches the center of the warehouse. Here, a dim light bulb provides the only illumination in the building, causing the nearby crates to cast ominous, black shadows that reach into the unlit depths of the warehouse.

Joining those shadows are the lengthened shadows of other black-robed figures of all shapes and sizes. One large, bulky figure sneezes, temporarily illuminating that part of the building in fiery sparks. All the figures are standing in a circle around an open wooden crate as the new arrival stops in front of it. The crate is empty.

"Must this be done?" whispers the figure, cradling the bundle in their arms.

One of the shorter figures steps forward, breaking the circle. He lowers his hood, revealing his mustachioed face. Mario.

"Yes. It is the only way to move forward," Mario says softly, laying his hand gently onto the new arrival's arm. "For every new beginning, there must be an end."

The other robed figures lower their hoods, revealing their faces: Luigi, Bowser (the one who sneezed), Peach, Donkey Kong, Link, Zelda, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Pikachu...and many more. All have sad, somber expressions on their faces.

Finally, the new figure with the bundle nods and carefully unwraps the bundle. A Wii U system is revealed, complete with a GamePad, Pro Controller, a couple of Wii Remotes, connecting cables, and other add-ons and accessories. One by one, these are carefully packed into the crate until nothing is left in the newcomer's arms.

The Wii U Bearer then puts the lid onto the crate; the resulting thunk reverberates through the warehouse. On the lid is a plaque that reads "Nintendo Wii U: 2012-2017". A Hammer Bro. comes forward and nails the crate shut.

The crate is then taken in a procession by all present to a corner of the warehouse. The light in the center was extinguished, the only sources of light now provided by torches carried by some of the party. The torches illuminate some labels of other crates as the procession walks past them: the Sega Genesis, Atari 2600, N64, SNES, Playstation 2, Magnavox Odyssey...the list goes on and on.

Finally, the procession reaches their destination and, after a moment of silence, slide the crate in beside the Nintendo Wii. The robed figures slowly begin departing the warehouse, but the Wii U Bearer is the last to leave.

Before the Bearer turns to go, they rest their hand on the crate for the last time. They inhale, smelling the scent of new wood that they know, with time, will age and become covered in layers of dust. Memories dash through the Bearer's head as they recall all the fun times they had with the Wii U, though its time was short-lived compared to its father's success a generation before. Such a system full of potential, and yet it was slowly abandoned until now, with even its creator giving it a slow, painful death.

The Bearer turns away and, as they walk out, whispers to the beloved system for the final time.

"Rest in peace."

The Wii U was a good console that was poorly marketed and supported (even by Nintendo). I think they could have made it work had they dropped the price (allowing it to become a cheap second console for first party titles) or made more effort to support the system with regular releases. But much like the N64, there were too many times where you were given a single game to last a few months (or more). While that somewhat worked back in the N64 era, there are too many other choices and a lot more noise to inform people to stay away.

I know they kept insisting that the gamepad was integral to the experience, there are only a few games that justified the controller. Perhaps had they re-released the Wii U with a Pro Controller + Wii Mote instead and patched games like Mario Maker to accept alternate inputs (like Pikmin 3 was patched), again there may have been a second life for the console.

Instead, it will eventually reach a cult status much like the Dreamcast and Gamecube before it.
