Topic: A grounded(!) argumentation wheter to buy of not to buy a WiiU

Hello everyone, I'm new here, followed NL for some time but didnt'register untill recently.

I have been growing up with nintendo since the gameboy generation and I think it's safe to say that Nintendo was one of the factors sculpting my childhood.
I've been part of almost every generation of gaming consoles and handhelds of nintendo, untill recently.
After the WiiU Nintendo Direct I was very optimistic about WiiU and a few days after I pre-ordered one.

But as time passed I sort of lost my enthousiasm. I feel the magic that was at the 3DS and Wii launch is missing here, and I fear I'm losing interest in Nintendo and the way they approach me.

If I was this age when Wii came out I wouldn't have bought it, and I'm afraid Nintendo won't handle it's audience different this time.
It really is painful; when they leave there key audience in the dark like they're doing now.

Do you think that WiiU is a step foward?
Do you think Nintendo Network won't be terrible?
Do you think most 3rd party developers will ignore the gamepad, because they think it's to much of a hassle?

What I'm trying to say is; Why should I buy a WiiU when I feel i'm not part of the audience anymore?
I love Nintendo franchises, but knowing it'll take a year before they enter the fray, is it worth the purchase?

BTW, I'm sorry if this is just another why of why not to buy topic, but I couldn't find my answers in the other threads

Do you want to play the games that will be playable on the Wii U?

If yes, buy one. If no, don't buy one.

If undecided, buy Born This Way, you'll thank yourself for it.

Are you freaking kidding me? You don't need adds all over the place, the Wii U has a strong line up, so it will do fine, and if this is true (http://wiiudaily.com/2012/09/wii-u-zelda-game-coming-2014/) then the system is worth it just because of this one game.

Want to play Nintendo games? Buy it.

Want to play Nintendo exclusive games? Buy it.

If no on both alternatives, don't buy it.

I kind of get where you're coming from. For the longest time the Wii U was the only Nintendo console I wasn't excited for, however that did all change with the Sept. 13 Wii U event in NYC. Nintendo is on the right track here. They have a powerful piece of hardware that is affordable for every type of gamer. They have strong early third party support and of course all the great franchises that can not be found elsewhere. I've been gaming for over 20 years now, and while there are times I find myself wondering about Nintendo they always find a way to turn those doubts around and deliver something to pull me back in. Unless you have literally no interest in Nintendo's franchises, I honestly can't think of a good reason not to buy the Wii U. It's true third parties may not use the gamepad to its potential but I'm almost certain Nintendo will.

Thanks for all the responce! I've always loved the Nintendo franchises, but since most of them won't appear for a year and a half i'll have to keep myself busy with 3rd party games. This worries me because most wii3rd party games were kind of Sad. I know some were beautifull but i'm afraid most 3rd party developers won't do anything special with the gamepad.

But in relation to OP: N64 was the console that made me have the feelings you mention. That and game boy pocket shaped MY childhood. My optimism and excitement for Wii U are on par with when those 2 systems came out.

Let's just hope Nintendo will make some more statements soon, I really want to know more about Miiverse for example. Telling me it's gonna be unlike everything I've ever seen is not what I want to hear. Nintendo gives me info, I give them my money. Sounds fair right?

I definately think the System is a move forward

The Network is always Terrible except for a mariokart game they throw up and say hey there's your network gaming. I have no hopes of it being better until they prove themselves they are dedicated to network play

I think Developers will love trying to program on the new hardware it should open up a whole new way of gaming and will be very cool to switch to the pad on the fly if you dont want to be looking at the TV.

I'm in the same boat im a 40 something gamer and Nintendo has absolutely not moved along with it's original gamers. They seem to would rather Lose it's oldtimer gamers and bring in new very young gamers and don't want to move move along with it's old guys. It's sad and I don't game on Either system but the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 seem better suited for us older players. I just roll along with hopes that Nintendo will wake up and eventually realize that there is an older gaming base out there with the money in their pockets.

That would be a personal Choice and this is how I figured it out. I looked at the first projected releases which is about 50 titles and asked myself, How many of those first releases am I interested in. The Number I came up with was 3 which includes the new Theme Park Based games. For Myself that was just not enough for me to buy the Wii-U. Now if they Release Dragon Quest IX Online for the Wii-U I wont be able to get to the store fast enough to buy the Unit. But one thing is for sure with Nintendo and Older gamers these days......You will need to have alot of Hope but you will have alot of frustrations at the same time. I stick with them and may have bought my last system with the 3DS that I will ever purchase in my life but if the wii-u can prove itself I will eventually get it

Now on topic, Mario will be available right off the bat, and so will multiple 3rd party titles, with Pikmin following soon. I for one, plan on picking up a deluxe asap. I'm on a wait list. But just do what you want bro. :3

Yep. Right up to the point where it becomes economically viable to dedicate resources to gamepad development.

Launch window? Hell no. Beyond? Really depends whether the Wii U takes off.

If you're really on the fence, there's no harm in waiting just in case the system fails or they drop the price substantially 5 months later.

But in all seriousness, I know exactly how you feel @Sjoerd. I can't help but wonder if the WiiU is doomed to suffer the same fate as the Wii, except without all of the initial enthusiasm that was present 5 years ago. However, I'm a Nintendo fan for life, and I have a certain amount of respect, faith, and optimism for Nintendo as a company as well as the WiiU as a product. I'm hoping for the best, though I won't be opening my wallet without a good reason.
