I wish they would revisit something like Sunshine again

I totally agree with you, however if they did make a Galaxy-esque game I wouldn't mind that either, those games were fantastic!

why not just combine galaxy, 64, super mario world and super mario brothers 3 like the taco girl says why not both?

3D Mario games don't need to keep going to the next new frontier that comes to mind, when they can do wonders by simply expanding the world Peach, Mario, Bowser, etc. live on. They did it in Sunshine with Isle Delfino and they did it in Superstar Saga with the BeanBean Kingdom. I would like to see the next 3D Mario offer a new setting closer to home for the Mario Bros.

Keep in mind the Mario games always had some sort of beautiful feature the console could offer
Super Mario 64 used polygons, for one of the first polygon masterpieces
Sunshine had a stunning water effect, only found on the Gamecube
Super Mario Galaxy used the Wii's excellent shaders to make some beautiful levels.
Super Mario 3D Land showed 3D is beautiful, and rewarding
If the Wii U has anything that stands out to it, graphically, I'm sure Miyamoto will use it to his advantage.
@Waveboy Super Mario Land far less original than 3D Land, and let me remind you New Super Mario Bros. Wii offered Co-op for the first time. I'd also say New Super Mario Bros. 2 was very original, remixing New Super Mario Bros, as much as it can, while NSMBU offered creative levels. NSMB1 hasn't aged well though.

I can't wait for this game. I expect it to play alot like the Galaxy games, but I don't think it will be Galaxy 3. I am expecting SM64-esque levels, Galaxy-esque gameplay, and 3D Land physics. Either that or something similar like an expansion of the 3D land formula.

I think they're going to do the obvious and give us Super Mario Universe aka Mario Galaxy 3.

Which I wouldn't have a problem with tbh.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

I would love a Super Mario Universe/Galaxy 3. I love the Galaxy games. But I am not sure if 3D Mario Wii U will be Galaxy 3 or not. The reason Galaxy 2 exists is because it is essentially all the unused content of Galaxy 1 put on another disk. Galaxy 2 is more of an expansion than a true sequel.

My idea is that Mario (and Luigi) are shrunken down by whoever (most likely bowser) and the game takes place within a toads house, you must collect stars to power a machine that would make you regular size again. this game would be 2 player co-op. one player on the t.v., one on the game pad. and it would return to the style of 64 and Sunshine with giant worlds to explore and many stars and secret stars to collect in each world. and lets face it 120 stars is not enough, they went past it in super Mario galaxy 2 and i think that was a good call. so there could be a living room, bathroom, boys bedroom, girls bedroom, backyard, basement, kitchen, attic, park, sewers, there are so many good ideas/places, but hopefully they don't put too many places, i felt that was one of the biggest problem with the super Mario galaxy games. i think it would be cool if Mario and Luigi had to work together sometimes, but you could also split up, and of course there would be a single player option as well. new power ups could include a Velcro Mario that could stick to things and such, paper could be floaty and and turn thin, and a sponge that could slide, float on water, and wash stuff.
since The Bros. are now small there couldn't be toads and such to talk to, although maybe you could talk to the residents of the home, but now you could talk to toys, and drawings come to life called doodles. and every Super Mario game has really fun controls so i would like new mechanics, keep roll from super Mario 3D land and maybe add grab or dash or something. also it would be cool if the game was open world, but if it wasn't it would still be awesome. the hub world could be the living room. maybe some of the bosses or half bosses would be regular enemies from Mario but now they are huge because you are so small, such as a goomba. there would also be some secret levels off the hub world such as a mouse hole, or inside a TV. What ever Nintendo does it will no doubt be good, but i think this would be a great, and fun idea, especially with beautiful HD graphics, and the big worlds this new system can handle.

There aren't many places Mario hasn't been, so I have no idea what the theme is going to be for the next one to keep it fresh. I am kind of just hoping for a SM64 castle kind of game again. That would be pretty awesome. Better yet you start at her castle jsut like any side scrolling mario and then you go from castle to castle, in 3D until you get to the final bowser castle Bettter yet come up with an entirely new villain instead of Bowser. Bowser can afford to sit one out

Maybe it could have multiple different castles, each one with lots of painting worlds. The castles are all connected in an open world where you use more platforming to get to each one, or, once you find each path, you could use a kart to get there faster instead. Imagine SM64, but with more castles the size of Peach's connected by an OoT-like open world with more platforming all over.

I honestly have thought this through and why not have Mario chase bowser into new and old worlds go back to Mario 64 worlds and sunshine chasing bowser because he keeps escaping finally after chasing him through 64, sunshine you get to the new world and do the levels there and obviously rescue princess peach!! (I don't why people hated sunshine it was amazing, beautiful game!)

Nintendo has not made one 3D Mario game I don't love (except for Super Mario 3D Land which I finished in seven hours and found to be mind numbingly easy), so I'm pretty sure I will enjoy whatever they do. Nintendo has also been pretty unpredictable with the 3D Mario games. Both Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy were basically impossible to predict, and I'm not feeling too different right now about the next game.

Whatever Nintendo does, I'd like to see a bit more exploration and discovery make a return. Both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine offered large comprehensive levels with lots of nooks and cranies to discover. I think Super Mario Galaxy is great (as I said, I love it), but a negative side effect of designing most levels around a series of small planetoids is that the levels themselves are forced to be pretty straightforward. We just got two great Super Mario Galaxy games. It's time for something else.

YES, someone else who feels the same way! I'm not sure how fast I finished it, but I know I finished it within a weekend.

Anyway, I would really like the new Mario to be an open world kind of thing, or at least an expansive hud and levels I could explore in depth. My favorite things about Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine that I missed in Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 were the expansive huds with hidden levels, and all the hidden collectibles within the levels. (I really liked the blue coins in SMS, although I did have a guide so I probably didn't go searching as much as some people)

Now that I think about it, a good comparison to my image would be DK64, although the new Mario would be much more fast-paced and with much more emphasis on platforming rather than puzzle solving.

@MasterWario First of all, cool name! Secondly yes!!! Open world Mario is what I want. I would love it if it takes a bit of inspiration form the first Jak and Daxter game. There is so much potential in the open world game play. Imagine having to find a certain gem or something so that you can barter a ride on Wario's pirate ship t get to a particular island etc etc It would be the ultimate adventure game being free to explore a huge area.

It's Wario time Yaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

O and having Mario be shrunk (as somebody has said in this thread) would be fantastic!
