As long as Retro Studios keeps showing improvement, as they've done to this point, then I would be fine with a Metroid Prime 4. I would like that to be a fresh entry in that I hope they stay committed to Prime 3 being the end of the Phazon arc. I would like to see Metroid Prime 4 be more explorative than Metroid Prime 3, but with less puzzles with more focus on combat and environmental designs that provide alternate routes. The Metroid Prime Trilogy games take too long relative to every entry in the series aside from Other M, so I'd like another Retro Prime to be designed with faster routes without having to break the game with glitches. 2 hours would be a nice starting place, but 90 minutes would be ideal. With this game being $60, multiplayer on par with Metroid Prime Hunters is becoming something I want to see again in the series just to make me confident that I'm getting my money's worth. I think it was a missed opportunity for Metroid Prime 3 to have the feature absent.

I think Retro should go ahead and change the subtitle now that the Prime trilogy is over. It can still be in first person (if that's what they want) but they don't have to call it Prime. I kind of think once you go past 3, it starts to get a little repetitive. An example of that would be Halo 4 and Halo 5. Once you go that far, it seems like your milking the name a bit.

Edit: Also, do you think the Metroid Blast mini game in Nintendo Land is any indication of where the franchise is headed gameplay wise? I was just playing that game with my sister yesterday, and it is an AMAZING co-operative experience. Just my two cents.

I think my "preferred" Metroid experience, no matter what genre, would have to have several factors.

  • Improved Combat (Prime's combat and Other M's combat really weren't the best in my opinion.)
  • A limited hint system in the style of Zero Mission. (I like that the chozo statues told you where to go, but they didn't necessarily tell you how to get there. I like my hand held just a wee bit, but not too much. Which is why I despise Metroid NES and Metroid II.)
  • Less focus on puzzles, but more focus on discovering new ways to get to your next destination.
  • Give Samus some character. (This is a highly debatable one. I personally would like to see Samus talk a little more, but not on Other M's level. She can still talk and be a strong character, just look at Commander Shepard from Mass Effect!)

In general I'd disagree since Halo: 4 is the last numbered Halo (5 has the Guardians subtitle). That said if they were to another 3D Metroid game i'd ditch the Prime subtitle for something newish. I know some people like the over the shoulder view but for Metroid the first person hud allowed made for a more exciting game. As for the game I'd go with the much faster paced combat of Metroid Prime 3, and the start the story off sometime after the ending of fusion. The game would also have an arena multiplayer mode like what we got on hunters for the Ds.

But this is Nintendo a company with an obsession with 2D as of late, and will possibly try to sell a Star Fox shoot em up for $60.

Why all of a sudden is everyone devaluing the Star Fox franchise? I expect it to be a 60$ game and not a budget title. The series has never been budget so why would people start to think now it should be?!

Okay I can get that. I just hope that the combat is a little more exciting and actually satisfying. Besides slaying huge bosses, I always thought the combat was always meh in the Metroid Prime games. Compared to Halo or Destiny, killing goons just isn't as satisfying in Metroid Prime. They just sort of well... die in Metroid. There isn't any "feedback" from killing the enemy in Metroid. If you know what I mean. Also we need a melee system if the next game is first person. We've all played Smash Bros. We know Samus can bash some skulls.

Edit: And as to Star Fox being 60 bucks. Well, I paid full price for Kid Icarus Uprising, and THAT was a shoot-em-up. I got all my money's worth there. They just need to make the game longer, or price it at 40 or 50.

But Kid Icarus didn't just have the shoot em up parts, it had on ground combat and multiplayer as well and had a pretty long story mode. I'm interested in the new star fox based on what Miyamoto's comments about what the game's presentation would be like. However if it were up to me the new star fox game would have been a third person shooter similar to Mass Effect, with air combat like that of Ace Combat.

Exactly. We don't know what else Star Fox has to give us yet to warrant a 60 dollar price tag. Nintendo knows what they are doing pricing wise. They put Captain Toad at 40 bucks and DKCTF at 50. They'll do the same with this game if it lacks content. But we're getting off topic. Sooooo Metroid. Would you rather it take place after Fusion, or before Fusion? Me? After Fusion. Doesn't matter what genre, even if it's another Prime. I want after Fusion. Samus versus the Galactic Federation AND the Space Pirates? Me gusta.

Wow, I never knew DKCTF lacked content! I don't think that's what Nintendo has in mind when they price games. Animal Crossing New Leaf has all the content in the world and it was priced 5$ cheaper and they didn't even have to do that.

Splatoon already exists, so why would Nintendo reinvent Metroid a second time and end up with two 3rd person shooters when they could just improve on the same basics and have a greater diversity of titles? I hope the hypothetical new metroid prime games include a greater variety of beam weapons, the same great puzzles, and a new emphasis on story.

Make Metroid Prime read like Mass Effect nix all the branching choices and there you go. I already made my femshep act like Samus all the way through those 3 games, I just want Samus Aran: Space Badass the game.

See, that's what I mean. I don't want dialog choices, just some good acting at least.

That's not really what I meant. They priced DKCTF that way most likely because it was another 2D platformer (simpler than other genres) and they also knew that it would not sell as well as Mario. I'm not picking on the game, I know it's brilliant. But I see why they priced it the way they did. Donkey Kong does not compare sales wise to Mario, regardless of quality, so therefore it had a cheaper price.

There's been 5 uses of the Prime subtitle. I think they can stop the numbering, but I do think the title "Metroid Prime" gives every Metroid fan a clear idea what to expect in terms of the game's design. If Retro decides that they want to do a Metroid Prime Hunters 2 I would definitely want the game to be called Metroid Prime Hunters 2. I don't think Nintendo is any danger of being repetitive with the Prime title anyways given how different each game is. It's not like Mario Kart or Pokémon by any stretch, not that they're that repetitive either (well, Mario Kart isn't). If there's any name that should be dropped due to a sense of repetition, it's NSMB.

I don't ever want to have a Metroid game offer a co-op experience in its adventure mode, but I'm perfectly fine with a separate multiplayer mode that's much like Metroid Blast. Ideally, as well as Metroid Blast worked, I would want such a mode to be designed in first person due to the greater precision and handling. I don't want to be holding a button down just to turn around Samus or another bounty hunter like I did in Metroid Blast.

The Prime Trilogy had a feature in the logbook called Samus' Notes. I would like to see that expanded to include creature, object and lore entries, with better writing, and have Samus narrate her notes to the player when that portion of a scan is selected. It'd be a nice way to include more character for Samus, keep her with a voice and offer it as an option as opposed to a potential intrusion.

The chance of Metroid Wii U being 2D is high but.... Nintendo might shock us all with a 3D Metroid starting a new series that's not Prime.

To be fair I didn't think Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze was worth $50 either.

I love Metroid Blast, but Nintendo has two multiplayer third person games slated for next year. Thing is would you like the series to be similar to the first two games which were more slow paced or more like Corruption which seemed like Halo lite at times. I'd say the third game is my favorite in the series, but the first two games play more like 2D metroids more.

I'd like a faster pace, but better combat to suit that faster pace. If Prime is what most people are rooting for than that's cool. I just hope Retro can really innovate with the franchise, and change some mechanics around. Maybe give vehicles a chance? O.O I'd like some wider, more open areas to explore, instead of constant hallways. Also yeah, about the multiplayer mode I mentioned, it would be a totally different mode, and separate from the main one.

I would love a game that takes place after Fusion, they could do neat things not just the storyline, but with the gameplay as well. Now that Samus is part Metroid, they could give her some more Metroid themed abilities.

I agree that if it's for the Wii U , it has to be 3D. 2D is already filled up with Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Kirby.... and from a progression and marketing point of view, Prime 4 makes most sense. Metroid Other M had an amazing control scheme in my opinion. Unique and so fun to twist the remote around and change gameplay. One of the nicest experiences on the Wii.

The 2D Metroids and the first two Primes are worlds apart. For one, 2D Metroids are generally 3-4 times faster than my fastest runs through Metroid Prime. The margin just gets greater for Echoes and Corruption, not factoring in glitches for any of the games. There's a reason why 2D Metroid has completion time endings where as the Prime Trilogy has only collection based endings. 2D is designed for much faster gameplay, the Primes overall are designed to be very slow. I would love for a new Prime to actually allow completion as quickly as 2D Metroid making extensive use of glitch-free alternate routes.

To be honest, as far as 2D Metroid on the Wii U goes, I would probably prefer that from Retro Studios as opposed to another first person Metroid. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze to me is their best release, and I think they could really take 2D Metroid to the next level given what they've done with DK. If their take on 2D Metroid has as much polish and attention to design as TF, I'd easily call that their best Metroid title.
