So, if it was being made, which one would you want? Me personally? I'd rather have a beautifully animated 2D adventure. I'm not talking sprites, but detailed character models and backgrounds. I'm really not a fan of the Prime games at all. Everything is too dang cluttered on the screen, and scanning is a chore. People complain about too much dialog in Metroid games like Fusion and Other M, but I think it's even worse if I have to stop every 2 minutes to read a scan log just to get the story. I'd rather have a nice 2D adventure again, with more storytelling told through gameplay, than cinematics.

I've been playing through Super Metroid again (My favorite SNES game of all time, btw) and I'm really appreciating the beauty of it. It's just you against the planet, surviving on your own, and fighting disgusting bosses and bad guys. Also, if there is going to be another Metroid game, I hope they make the enemies really freaky, gross, and frightening again. Every game since Prime 1 really has been lacking in the creeptastic department. (Except for when they brought Nightmare back in Other M, that was nice and terrifying.)

On another note, I would also love to run through the game with another person. Maybe increase the difficulty if your playing two players. I'd love if both players could go off on their own and do some adventuring, either splitscreen, or gamepad with television. Maybe throw in some online missions too. This could all be optional, because I would definitely rather run through it alone first, but being able to have another person with you the second time could really change up the formula. Heck, including some two-person environmental puzzles would also be pretty sweet.

Edit- Dang, you guys have started to make me want a 3D Metroid more now! I've been thinking about it, and here's what I've come up with.

Story: After the events of Metroid Fusion, Samus is wanted by the Galactic Federation. The Federation chases her ship and eventually an all out battle ensues. They inevitably shooter her down, and her ship crash lands on an unknown hostile planet, with a dark secret. Samus must somehow get off the planet, and get the GF's off her back. That is where our story begins.

Gameplay:

  • Combat is similar to Mass Effect 3, although Samus is just a tad bit more agile. She can strafe and use her grapple beam (Bulletstorm style) to pull enemies closer to her in order to deliver a melee blow. Her blaster relies on a cool-down feature, and she can pick up various sub-weapons that rely on ammo to keep them sustained. If Samus manages to down an enemy, she can perform a "Metroid Drain" attack. Because she is part Metroid (play Fusion) she can absorb power from downed enemies. That is the main way of restoring your health in the game, although there are also Energy Tanks.
  • Exploration is classic Metroid, with a pinch of Deadspace jump scares thrown in. The environment is moody and atmospheric. You can also pick up dropped audio logs to listen to through the gamepad speakers or TV. Samus will react to the audio logs, but I'll get to that in a second.
  • Graphics and Sound: The graphics have an almost Borderlands like look to them. They are cartoony, and yet dirty and grim. There is in fact blood in this game, I feel that adding that will make downing enemies a little bit more satisfying, and will also make the enemies and bosses a little MORE terrifying. Although there isn't an ABUNDANCE of it. The sound will be classic Metroid atmosphere. I believe that Samus should, in fact have a voice. However, this Samus is a stark contrast to the one we saw in other M. This Samus is witty and strong. She doesn't talk a WHOLE LOT, but when she does, it is usually impactful, or clever. Maybe a funny reaction to an audio log she just picked up, or maybe a quick one liner before going up against a boss. I think this can help to make Samus a strong female character. She will also be voiced by Jennifer Hale, of Metroid Prime, and Mass Effect fame. Just remember though, she doesn't talk THAT MUCH, maybe just as much as Master Chief did in the Halo games.

"...with more storytelling told through gameplay, than cinematics." I forget where I saw the article, but what you said there is pretty much Miyamoto's approach to games. I have this feeling that a new 2D Metroid might not be out of the question, though I'm not sure if it would be on Wii U.

As much as I loved Super Metroid and Fusion, I'd much rather the next installment be a 3D entry, preferably in the style of Other M. I thought the combination of 3D environments with camera worked that invoked 2D sensibilities was fantastic. I also enjoyed the stronger focus on narrative that the game had. Just a much more enjooyable experience for me than Metroid Prime.

3d Wii U. We have far too many games in 2d on the Wii U. If they really want to showcase the U It needs to be in 3d. Save the 2d stuff for the 3ds as it's a better fit for it.

If it's 2D, it needs to be on 3DS. Putting it on Wii U would be a complete waste of the console's resources.

Don't know if that cancelled 3DS Metroid game leave room for 2 different Metroid game on the Wii U, or if this doesn't affect the Wii U Metroid plans. Since it's rumored that Retro is the Metroid/Wii U developer, it might be a 2.5D game?

I would prefer to get a new 2D Metroid, but it should be on the 3DS.

3D, like other M, with a better history and overworld.

I think we can forget the train wreak that was Other M. I'm sure Nintendo got enough bad feedback from it that the style they used even if it was Team Ninja is dead and gone.

Okay I can understand having a 3D game to show off the Wii U's processing power. But if the game IS in 3D, I would rather it not be in first person to tell you the truth. Maybe have it be Other M style, but a little slower so that we can appreciate the environments more, with full camera control and an actual control scheme that involves control sticks. Or, the game could be an exploratory Mass Effect style TPS.

3D on the Wii U. 2.5D on the 3DS. The 2.5D visuals on the 3DS can be enhanced with the 3D. The 3D on the Wii U will explode with HD.

"and an actual control scheme that involves control sticks." Nice one!!!

I appreciate what everybody else is saying here, but for my money it's got to 3D, Metroid Prime-esque game. I know graphics aren't everything, but man oh man do I want to see what a Prime game could look like on Wii U. I'm not a big fan of the art style that's being used in the new Zelda game, so I'd like to think that the next Metroid game could be Nintendo's chance to really show off the type of realistic graphics that the Wii U can turn out. That's what the original Prime did for Game Cube at a time when Zelda was going with the Toon look, so I'd love to see history more or less repeat itself now with the Wii U.

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

No 3D! First we want a proper Next Gen system of the WII U. Next WII U will be a great console. Yes i already named it hihi. 2D will work best for this game. Nuff said

I don't really think it's best if Nintendo tries to go for hyper realistic right now, especially with their console being the least powerful out of all 3. What has been making Nintendo games for this generation, is the unique art style that their games have. I think the next Metroid should go for a stylized look that can be a nice soft "reboot" for the series after Other M. (Which I didn't really HATE per say...) I think they should also focus on some horror elements as well, and really bring back the "scary" to Metroid, that has been missing since Fusion.

However, if they DID decide to do another First Person Adventure, I would rather them not clutter the HUD this time. Ideally, if Nintendo were making a 3D Metroid game, I would like it to be a mix of Mass Effect styled shooting, with Dead Space elements, and classic Metroid environments and adventure.

I would like the enemies to not look like stupid cartoon characters anymore. Most of the basic enemies look kind of stupid and generic when put in 3D. I would instead like a interpretation of them.

I've been hoping for a 3D Metroid on Wii U, but not first person, maybe more similar to Other M, how in places it felt 2.5D, but was mostly 3D. Then, on 3DS, they can make a First person Metroid with multiplayer, like a sequel to Metroid prime hunters. I think FPS multiplayer works better when everyone has they're own screen, and with the 3DS's gyroscope, aiming could be so much easier than it was on DS.

I've updated the OP with my idea for a 3D game.

Bayonetta 2 says NO! Really, just look at what Prime did for the Cube when made said it looks like next gen already. Not only could they make a hyper realistic looking Metroid it would scare me what Retro could do with the graphics. I think we could be talking about the best looking game hands down on the Wii U. First person or not it will look realistic and great because since when on consoles did they not go for realistic?!

I think it would be better to define the art in Bayonetta 2 and Prime as something else than "realism". Both games use highly stylized art, but not realism (or cartoon style for that matter).

3D Prime style or bust. The Wii U has a lot more to add to that style than Classic or Other M. For one, there's the graphics and level design, the Wii U allows them to make larger and more open areas. Now I don't expect it to be Xenoblade Chronicles X or Zelda U levels of openness of course because the design has always been room based, but they could make larger rooms and more paths/less linearity. And then the Gamepad has a lot to offer to that style. There's the usual stuff like maps, menus, and gyroscopic aiming, but there's a couple of other ways that the Gamepad could help. For one, they could map scanning and visor control to the Gamepad, which would make using other visors a bit less clunky. And then Retro mentioned an idea where they could map functions to Samus' forearm (Source: http://www.gamnesia.com/news/retro-studio-talks-hypothetical-... The Wii U feels like it was tailor made for Prime, it'd be a travesty if it doesn't get one. They can put anything else on the 3DS.
