On the surface it looks decent enough. Nice graphics, Nintendo brand cuteness and Yoshi in his own adventure. Sounds like a good combination but somehow this game is repulsive to most gamers. I honestly can't think of many Nintendo platformers that suck so what went wrong here? Is it the melon fetching? I don't see how this game flopped.

I've actually played a little bit of the game myself, and I really didn't think it was THAT bad, though I definitely see where it's criticism comes from. It's definitely nowhere near the quality of Yoshi's Island, of course....
I've played it, and I think it's great. I think some people that really, really hate it is because they immediately judge the game without getting into it. Alot of people do that to alot of my favorite games, and it's annoying.
Love that game, as Twario said most people just judge it without playing it enough, it's not that easy when you try to finish every single level eating just melons, I found that fun and it has some cool twists for a platformer. I've heard bad comments about it's cuteness, but c'mon is Nintendo, everybody should be used to that already.
A friend of mine rented that one. When he turned it on and we were greeted with a theme song that sounds like rusty nails scraping a chalkboard as they stab your eardrums, we both knew that he'd made a mistake by picking that one out. When I went over there again later that day or the next day he was playing it and he'd gotten most of the way through the game, and he explained, "I know this game sucks, but I'm forcing myself to complete just so I can say I've completed it."
So, a couple weeks later... he rented it again... I asked him why and mentioned how much it had sucked, and he had no idea what I was talking about until he put it in and heard the theme song again. The experience had been so bad that he had completely blacked it out. We immediately set out to return it and rent something else after the theme jogged his memory though.
I've never played it myself, of course, but I just thought that the selective amnesia that my friend got from playing it said a lot about just how bad it really was.
Yoshi's Island was great, of course. I played the hell out of that until I had completed everything 100%. But I just couldn't be less interested in Yoshi's Story.
The main thing I dislike about this game are the stupid cutscenes with the singing, and you cant skip them (they take soo long!) But overall, I like the game.
I loved and hatet it, i loved it because its great and funny but i hatet that it was expensive and too easy i paid 120 Deutsche Mark= 60€uro for just a few hours of gameplay took me 2 day to complete it
Don't hate it, not bad enough to hate, but far from a classic either, pretty graphics but the gameplay never really went above average IMO, an ok game but VC has a lot better to offer.
Like I was saying to Super Smash Bros Fan a few weeks ago, seeing the ending once is not beating the game. You really need to unlock and do all twenty-four levels to consider it beaten. People are right about the gameplay but I wouldn't call it very easy. Some of those twenty-four levels can be quite tricky (in a late Super Mario Bros. 3 level style).
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

I completed it with all levels but still was too easy it took me only 2 days(7hours of gametime) to complete it on VC its ok for 1000 points but on its release it was a total ripoff
I'll tell you why. Now I don't hate the game, but it is medicoric in my opinion, The game is way too easy, it has disappointingly easy battles, plus the music sucks. I had an low expectation (I was hoping the game would be okay) and it failed that. See my blog review on the game.
Now to wait for it's far superior game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
I watched a review on Youtube, where the guy said he beat the game and returned it the same day he bought it. When he played it again on the VC, he learned that the difficulty is what you make it. It's essentially an arcade game disguised as an adventure game .

Yeah when I bought it with my N64 when I was but a wee lad I thought the game was broken or something because I beat it in 20 minutes. So I took it back and got Mario Kart. Now that I'm reading this I kind of want to go back and play it again--the art style is awesome, Yoshi is awesome...why didn't I like this game?

I liked this when I was a kid and it was pretty fun at the time. Didn't seem that easy at first but after a few playthroughs It seemed all too easy. Haven't played it for years, so I'm not sure what I'll think of it now but I am also feeling the urge to go back and play this again now.
the main things were that it didn't have much of a 'story' and it wasn't very hard, really. The entire point of the game was for the player to attempt to outdo themselves by aiming to collect mostly melons, trying to get the black and white Yoshis, playing through each level (as in getting through all the different possible pathways through the 'story') and then, when they're all unlocked for replay, to try and rack up a better score than before in each level. That, and the annoying sounds/soundtrack, didn't sit well with everyone. :3
