I think it was a better concept than it was a game.
The good stuff: The music was top notch, and, unlike Adam, I thought the wide-open areas with multiple paths toward multiple goals were great. It really set the bar high for future Mario 3D games, and, fortunately, each 3D game did manage to get a little better.
The bad stuff: The controls are imprecise, the camera is AWFUL (I'd argue that the camera is the main villain of the game, since it's responsible for more deaths than Bowser ever could be), and Mario won't shut up.
Wasn't fussed about the two-player mode, really. I'm not a fan of games that alternate turns (they bore me), and I can't see any way they could have had the game work with two players simultaneously.
How in the world are the controls imprecise? And I have no clue why the camera is such a big issue. The camera NEVER messes up for me. To me, this game was sheer perfection and it will always sit on the top of the list of my favorite games ever. I love this game. To me, it was even a little better than Galaxy. And it will be a little better than Galaxy 2. This game is timeless, and in my opinion is the best game ever.
EDIT: Yeah, maybe I overreacted a little. Sorry about that. I just love this game.
Love the game, just for the nostalgia. It was one I beat and got the 120 stars a few times on (seeing Yoshi on the roof was pretty awesome the first time), and after playing through it so much I am a bit tired of the game. I know I played it on the DS and didn't enjoy it so much, but now have it on my Wii, and I am going to at least get the 120 stars before I take a few years off from it. I just remember how whimsical it was at the time when I would be glued to the N-64 Station at my local Toys R Us. When I got it for Christmas that year (I believe it was 96), I was ecstatic, just like every other child that got one that holiday. So yeah, a game that holds memories like that will always live on as a favorite of mine.

Chicken, I agree with MetalMario -- how on earth were the controls imprecise?? It was the very debut of an analog stick on a gamepad, and used it perfectly. I also have never been frustrated with the camera in these games. I agree with you, however, about the fun of the open areas where you could pick from any one of several stars to work towards, or just sort of play around until you come across something. I also love the linear levels, but both parts are important for 3D Mario games, they just keep changing the way they balance it (the linear "space" levels in Sunshine were one interesting solution, but Galaxy probably has the best idea by combining linearity with little planets you can still briefly explore).

Yeah, I like trying to find my own ways to get the stars too. The first alternate way I tried was long-jumping to the caged island instead of using the owl. There are a ton more, too. You can get every star in Snowman's Land before even getting the first one, and you can just use the cannon to shoot yourself to the top of the snowman. I like that alot.
Nintendo really needs to make a 3D Mario that is solely compromised of levels based on Sunshine's linear, FLUDD-less levels. I have never had more fun with a 3D platformer, and that's basically how I imagined Mario in 3D from the start. It's too bad the rest of Sunshine didn't appeal to me at all.
Even at the time I thought the camera was abysmal, but none of the reviews mentioned this. It's still great though, I find it has a pleasantly raw feel to it now; rather like the original Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario 64 will forever and for always be my second favorite game of all-time; right after Zelda Ocarina of Time! And SM64 was my first N64 game when I had the system way back then!
What makes it so addictingly fun is just running around with the analog stick and making Mario jump, double jump, triple jump, wall kick, punch, climb trees, go flying, turn into metal, turn invisible, search for stars in the coures, seach for 8 read coins, swimming, beat the bosses, beat bowser, save the princess, see yoshi, listen to the awe imspiring music, savor the legeacy of the game... I mean the possibilities are just endless; you can seriously get addicted to just roaming around instead of playing the actual game & getting all 120 stars!
I mean if you've seen and heard reviews about it still; people will say that it's addicting to just run around... like I mentioned that earlier!
The star system in Super Mario 64...made the levels artificially longer. Instead of getting 8 different levels with 10 or so stages each like in Super Mario Bros. 3, you get one stage for each level. But it just seems long because of the different star goals.
