I`m i long-time fan of the Mario Kart franchise, i`ve played and mastered them all and consider myself above at least above average in every input.
Back in the Snes days, i remember having earned gold medals in every cup, and being able to beat the game without breaking a sweat. So when the game finallly arrived on VC and me being Mario-Kart Wii/64 gold cup holder i sort off expected a semi-fast playthrough..... boy was i wrong!
I really don`t remeber this game for being this hard... the game is UN-FOR-GIV-ING! One single screw-up lands you on a last place, and you damn well better make a perfect run from there, otherwise it`s game over for you!
It`s nearing 6 months and i can`t even beat the 100cc and believe me, i`m not an angry gamer. My gaming-patience is unbelievable and i love a good challenge, but THIS... this is utter frustration, and a real shame, because i was really looking forward for this gem on VC.
How i was ever able to score gold medals in this game as a teenage kid in the 90`s is beyond me....!?
Yeah and I'm starting to think I never actually beat those tracks as a kid now. There's no way I did it back then - I definately played Rainbow Road but I'm guessing I must have just finished 100cc and that's it. I have it on the VC and I've managed to beat it in 100cc but 150cc is proving to be a challenge - I think I have had the last cup to do for over half a year now. Still, the challenge is good - I've managed to see all the tracks but still have more to play for, which makes it a good addition to my VC collection.
You may have beaten the game at 150 cc but it may have been with a second player. If you have 2 people in gp mode and don't competing against each other you can usually insure one person always gets first. The cheating AI will be divided between 2 people and if the 2 people can do 100 cc and one person agrees to be cannon fodder and to never past the person in first or to attack the person in first it is clear sailing.
The other thing is memorizing the sweet spots to drop bananas. An example of that is in ghost valley 1 there is one spot there the npc who is assigned to first place will always drive over.
One the straight away to the far left of this image there is a group of coins in the following pattern: o o o o o o o
As you approch these coins in game do not collect the coins drive on the plank of wood just to the right of the center coin and drop the banana right beside the coin.

i,ve never really played this one. i beat mario kart 64 and mario kart ds all the way, but i could never beat mario kart wii. and i didn't really like double dash

Between this game and Street Fighter II 'playing inside" with friends could never be more fun for me. Reading about how you guys are saying that this is so difficult has intrigued me enough (along with some nostalgia thrown in the mix) to give this a download or a cart purchase..

Maybe it's because Super Mario Kart was the first SNES game I owned as a child, but I think you guys are overstating how difficult the game is. The only cup that is REALLY hard is 150cc Special Cup. 100cc is a complete breeze, and the first three 150cc are too..(especially Mushroom Cup). 150cc Special Cup is only difficult because of the first two levels (Donut Plains and Koopa Beach)...if you can manage 2nd in both, 1st place in the remaining races isn't too hard. However, just placing in Donut Plains 3 is VERY hard. It comes down to not only being very good, but also catching a few breaks along the way.
Super Mario Kart relies heavily on SKILL v.s. luck, unlike several of the later entries. Generally you can't just win by getting good items. Learning how to "hop" with the L/R buttons while turning is crucial to getting good. I would recommend anyone having trouble with controlling their kart to race as Toad or Koopa Troopa. All of the other characters are pretty difficult to control. Because control plays such an important factor in winning races, Toad and Koopa Troopa are pretty much your ONLY options if you want to win a difficult Special Cup race.

This. Mario Kart on the SNES was the first one I've played, and even at such a young age, I never once thought that the game was difficult.
it's not too tough, but the physics kinda suck and doing good time-trial runs can be brutal. I can still murder the ghost town power-slide DK Hop for the absurdly low time well...maybe I still can--it's been years.
I personally had a harder time doing well on the N64 one, but I think that was more due to the crap framerate. It was like a horrid halfway between the really imprecise SMK/MK Super-Circuit sliding and the full-control, 3-tiered/powerup Double Dash/MK DS sliding. No thank you. I also think there was something wrong with the VC version of the MK 64.... not sure what it was, but the game controlled and played like absolute crap.

Really? I breezed right through MK64. I think the only course I had difficulty with was the mirrored Toad's Turnpike.
Yeah, Super Mario Kart is tough. I managed to finally beat Special Cup in 100cc and unlocked 150cc last night. I don't think I'm gonna bother trying to finish 150cc though.
