Hi guys I'm in the mood for a platformer and quite fancy SMB3 but I was reading about Cave Story (Never played it before). I don't really want more than 1 platformer to play cos I like to focus on one so should I wait for Cave Story or buy SMB3 (The price is certainly right with SMB3!) Also, I don't have the classic controller so that kinda discounts Super Mario World... Any suggestions? Thanks!
No, it really isn't a pick-up-and-play game. When you pick it up, you will want to keep playing. It gets somewhat unfairly compared to Metroid a lot. If anything it'd be more like Metroid Fusion because although you can backtrack if you would for some reason want to, it is a very linear game with areas that are often quite straightforward levels, and you generally don't have to explore much except for two or three quests such as the one where you're finding an old lady's dogs.
If "pick-up-and-play" is the sole quality you're looking for, go with SMB3. But if you're just looking for a great game, this is hard for me to say as Mario fan since birth, but it would be hard to pick the better game from these two. I wouldn't say that for many games, so it might be fun for you to try the newer one. Download it for PC first and see. It's free! If you like that kind of game, you'll be wanting to play it again once it's out on WiiWare, so it won't ruin it for you.
Thanks Adam! Sounds like you know these 2 games pretty well! And now I want them both! But that sounds like a plan! - I'm going to take your advice and have a go with the free PC version. Strictly limiting myself to 1/2 and hour play time. If it grabs me then I'm most certainly downloading it onto the Wii. (When it is finally released...any ideas on the date?).
On the Nicalis blog, producer Tyrone Rodriquez said: "If all goes well, you'll be playing Cave Story by the beginning of May or even end of April."
Why do you want to play it only half an hour on the PC? The PC version is awesome. The only reason to wait for the WiiWare version is because the PC game does not work on your PC. Or you want to give some money to the developers.
But it would be nice to sit on the sofa playing on a wireless pad
Precisely my reason to be excited despite having played through the game twice (though I've still yet to put enough effort into it to get to the secret area at the end).
Plus, I dislike playing games on keyboard, and the cost of a PC gamepad would probably be more than the cost of the WiiWare version, which will have new graphics, sound, and ... well, who knows what the DLC will offer!
Yes, I see. Playing it on a big TV screen while sitting on the sofa with a wireless controller is actually one reason to buy the WiiWare version. But I do not believe that the improved graphics adds much to the game. If for instance Mega Man 9 would be redesigned with high-resolution tilesets and sprites, the game would most likely not be better. Probably most people would even prefer the "old" design.
@Omega From what i heard the Wiiware version have extras and going to have DLC. And even if it didn't i would buy the game, and i played the original PC version several times. And if it's only an "hour and half" if you know what you are doing, pretty much the same thing on "Final Fantasy" or "Zelda". And if it's a waste of money i wouldn't buy games in the first place.
I'm curious if it's worth to buy the WiiWare version for the bonus content. They haven't revealed yet what it is. It's supposed to be a secret. Sounds like a bait and switch to me. Well, let's wait for the review.
No question I'll get this at launch to see what all the fuss is about. Action platform games I can get into; games where you jump on top of animated frowny mushrooms get a pass ;-P
