@theblackdragon You might as well lock the thread now, because you just answered the question and no-one can argue with it.

In related news, I don't think I should have to pay for food I already ate. If I already paid for Alaskan King Crab legs once, maybe 20 to 13 years ago, why should I have to pay for it again when I want to experience it a second time? Despite the fact that I'm getting it prepared and served to me all over again, and that I'm likely buying it in a totally different restaurant. It's madness!

@Sneaker13: by past re-releases, i meant retail versions. not all of us enjoyed the graphical upgrades some re-releases featured, and sometimes there were other drawbacks (like Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, with the smaller screen area naturally hampering your view and making you have to scroll around to see everything). yes, most of us either bought or were gifted all these classic games before, but that doesn't entitle us to be able to download them again for free just because we owned them on their original console.

I think the fact that games being re-released for newer systems is nothing new at retail kinda helps this topic to span more than just the VC... that's kinda the tangent i was leaning toward with my other replies. short answer: the statement is false.

I though this topic was about download titles (see opening post). I have absolutely no problem buying a game with better graphics, better music, new gameplay, better controls. etc. etc. I got no problem with those re-releases and I bought a fair amount of them. VC games are a different case. They are just ports. So if I already own a game for the original system, I'm not going to buy them for VC (as long as the original console is still working). However when my SNES breaks down I'll probably just redownload most of them on VC (or buy a new SNES).

@Sneaker13: right, and i get what you're saying, but the title of this thread is 'you shouldn't have to pay for games you already have or had'... it gives the OP the flavor of 'they should give me these games for free since i already paid two decades ago', and that's what we're all reacting to. by the title of the thread, it's like he's saying that you shouldn't have to pay to re-buy your games on VC when your SNES (god forbid) finally kicks it, which, again, is false.

No...I don't know of anything else that is. Maybe music from an online store, but I don't ever buy from any online stores for that reason. I want a CD in my hands.

Agree with this 100%. I'd rather buy an obscure single CD rather then buy it on iTunes...since I can rip it onto my PC anytime I want.

I agree. There are more examples of this, like DJ's who turn away from playing vinyl to CD's and even USB sticks. It makes music and other media impersonal; it's just some data...just a lot of 010101's :-[, no artwork, no feeling of having the special composition itself in your own hands. Some people call it improvement, well i call it impoverishing.

I've re-bought a few games, aLttP due to the carts battery dying, and a few others, not having to set up individual consoles everytime is a bonus too, not having the cart or box isn't a big deal to me, ebay and amazon rather than VC would be my main place for retro buys otherwise, a lot of retro games are actually cheaper on such sites than on VC, except a few rarities that is, also cuts down on needed shelf space too, one other benefit unlike 2nd hand purchases, games companies can still profit from downloads, and as a consumer I certainly have no problem sending more money to my fav games, just hope it encourages them to consider reviving a few.

What are you doing using a computer then? Its so impersonal to do so. Write everything by hand that you would on the computer and then send it by post to people you want to tell things to. That way we can see your handwriting instead of your text on a screen that is made up of 1s and 0s.

Not convenient enough for you? Then you get our point.

Exactly. It is impersonal. That is why i don't use stuff like MSN or other social-networks where you can show of your 10,000 digital friends, what really can be called socio- pathic networks. A lot of people do not even send Christmas- or birthday cards any more, they'd rather send an e-mail. Or the girl you met at a party only wants to exchange mail-addresses, not phone-numbers so you can hear each other's voice. I do not think technology is a bad thing, but people calling new stuff 'better' with such ease that they don't realise the loss of their personal or rather humane 'signature'... People should never become slaves of their own creations, seeing them as means and not as ends as such, simple as that.

I don't really have a problem with that, because they are digital, and look better on today's TVs, so it's not like it's exactly the same, and no one's forcing you to buy it. The problem I have, though, is that you don't really own it; you just own the license to play it on your console, which is really lame.

That's true for ALL video games

At the expense of what? Your social and emotional intelligence and thus abilities. That is why a majority of today's youth has problems reading emotions off fellow human beings. Everything in this decaying modern society uses tag phrases as 'better', 'faster', 'safer' and 'easier', and people fall for it, blindly, because they accept it instead of ignoring or rebelling against it. These are symptoms of lack of dedication and love.
