I suppose having infinite credits would make it easy, but it is really easy to lose lives. I can see how big a challenge it must have been in the arcades (as well as how many quarters it must have raked in).

That's because you don't have the nunchuck plugged in. For whatever reason despite having a wiimote-only mode, the analogue controller is required to input high scores. Your best bet is the Classic Controller: you get the d-pad for good control and the left stick for name entry.
The game isn't bad, but I'd take Blaster over Space Harrier any day of the week.
Yeah I surprised to read someone saying it's too easy but it will be with infinite credits - I forgot I used to play this on Shenmue and couldn't put too much money in the machine as I needed to save it all for toy capsules.
Try playing it with limited credits - such as five. That's what I always do with emulated arcade games - see how far you can get each time with just five credits. Hell when I play Street Fighter games I don't allow myself any continues - I try to finish it without using any and it makes it much more fun.
