Since there are so many great VC games on the Wii VC that are not on the Wii U VC I'm thinking about buying an SD-card for that purpose. From what I grasped the most appropriate is SDHC with a maximum of 32gb. Transfer speed is of course and important aspect and Nintendo apparently have a number of sponsored cards but those listed are a maximum of 2gb.
I could use some help regarding what guidelines to follow in order to buy a proper one.
I recommend you a 4 or 8 giga SD card. I have an 8 giga card and a lot of downloads and I haven´t get even half card. I think a 8 gigas card is perfect for Wii mode even if you download a lot of wiiware games (they are heavier but also you need a lot to fill your SD card).
2GB is more than enough for games and save data back-up considering how small Wii downloads are (maximum size for WiiWare games is 40MB, and most don't even come close to that size). Unless you plan on going berzerk and downloading every single title in the Wii shop, 2GB is plenty, however, given how cheap SD cards are nowadays, you might struggle to find one that small, in which case, the 4GB card will do. I have dozens of games on my SD card, with save game data and thousands of pictures (mainly from Animal Crossing and My Pokémon Ranch), and I still have room to spare.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

Yeah, I'd suggest a 2 GB card too, it's plenty of space for VC and WiiWare games.
Additional consideration: some old games like Excite Truck don't support SDHC cards, only old SD cards up to 2 GB. If you want to have custom music in Excite Truck for example, you'll need an SD card at 2 GB max.
Just like there's a 300 games per external harddrive limit on Wii U, there's a limit of 300 games per SD Card menu (on the Wii and in Wii U's Wii mode), the size of the medium doesn't matter.
My 1TB external harddrive for Wii U was too much: I still have more than 600 GB left, but more than 300 games (that don't appear in the Wii U menu until I delete older games). Tip: I should have bought 2x 500 GB and set up one external harddrive for 300 new games and the other external harddrive for 300 VC games.
32GB SD Card is too much for Wii. 16GB is enough for 300 VC/WiiWare games. Do the math: 300 games x the maximum file size of 40MB = 12GB total! Still, you have enough space for all your game saves + even a few MP3's for Excite Truck and Endless Ocean.
If Nintendo could just update those horrible limits. I stopped buying VC games because of this.
Any size works, as long as you format it properly to FAT32 with a partition management tool (Windows won't do it for cards larger than 32gb).
I'm using a 256gb SD and it runs flawlessly.
