I have noticed a lot of confusion about both how long the three-day cycle in Majora's Mask is in real time and how much the Inverted Song of Time slows down time. So, I timed it and here are the results:
Normal hour = 45 seconds Normal day = 18 minutes Normal cycle = 54 minutes
The Inverted Song of Time makes time pass exactly three times slower so:
You're welcome. Has anyone beaten this game by going back in time only once? You need to do the initial cycle, then go back to the first day, play the Song of Inverted Time and beat the game during that cycle.
Interesting stuff, though. I figured that a "normal" day in Termina lasted an hour, but I guess it's slightly less than that. It's such a great game...every time I read anything about it, it makes me want to sit down and play it again.
As for the numbers above, that is indeed useful. As far as I'm concerned, it puts to rest the complaints of those who act as if the time limit makes them rush unnecessarily through the dungeons -- you have more than 2 1/2 hours if you play the inverted song! Do you really need to sit for even longer than that playing through one dungeon?

I confess to being a complainer about the time limit in the dungeons. But, to be fair to me, once the final day begins, I start to panic. (If I'm in a dungeon, that is.) My stress level kicks up and I stop making rational choices and thinking clearly. So that's a whole worthless hour for me.
Much like the time-limit on Luigi's Purple Coins in SMG, the time limit is only relevant in terms of how careless it convinces you to be. Maybe this time (I just starting playing again on the VC) I'll try to put it from my mind. I'm sure I'll be healthier for doing it.
I also just started playing through it again recently on the VC -- this time, I intend to actually catch those fairies in each dungeon. The first time through, I was too lazy.

I'v never complained about the time but I do panic on the last day. but since you can go strait to a dungen entrance useing the song of soaring you can use the full 3 days on the dungen witch even without the inverted song is far more time then even the most lax of zelda players to finish. also you can re-fight boss's and re-save the area without re-doing the whole dungen since after you beat it once you can go strait to the boss's lair from the dungen entrance.
I've read that it is possible to beat by going back only once. You obviously can't beat it during the first cycle because you're stuck as a Deku Scrub and can't leave town. But then after you go back and slow down time you can beat it in one cycle. It's important to get Epona before the night of the first day so you have to focus on that.

Yeah, catching the fairies is great because it gives you more puzzles to do that you would otherwise miss out on.
A one-cycle run through might be possible (the review on MM said that some people had done it), but it would take the steel will of leaving every side quest alone. Speed runners usually use glitches and tricks to get through it. Oh, and I know that there is indeed a way to get to Great Bay without Epona. Saw a video of it requiring bombs and the Goron mask. Although...Yeah, a lot of glitches and tricks must be used to do that, especially with the final dungeons and their requirements for entering.
And thank you for that math. I always knew as a kid that it was too slow (after the Inverted Song of Time) to be half as fast as normal.
Awesome topic title. It caught my attention. And thanks for the useful info, especially the bit about how slow the Inverted Song of Time makes time pass.

I'm just about to start playing this game again and remembered this thread that I started over four years ago when Majora's Mask came out on the Wii Virtual Console!
I really hope that if Nintendo remakes this game they'll put it on Wii U. I don't own a 3DS and missed out on Ocarina 3D. Has anyone else been playing Majora's Mask recently? After Wind Waker HD came out I started playing all the old Zelda games again.

I would be playing Majora's Mask, but I'm assuming there will be a remake soon, and I love going into a game I love with as vague of an idea of what to do as possible.
