Not sure if this has been done before. (thought one of the puzzle games did)
So hopefully they start updating games in the future to work online.

The arcade version of Puyo Puyo is has online multiplayer too (that's probably the puzzle game you're thinking of).http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2011/02/japan_getting_online...

I don't like Puyo-Puyo. SNES version of Wario's Woods with online would be great...

If the trend continues, we won't be seeing any of those updates in the west.

That would be nice, wouldn't it?
However, I think this is just Sega going the extra mile with their VC releases. Just like with Puyo Puyo (online), R-Type for Master System (FM music option), and supposedly Monster World IV when it comes out (completely translated!).
Maybe if we're lucky, Sega will go back and add online support for some of the existing games on VC. In any case, I hope this trend continues with future releases. If you share this hope, then vote with your dollars!
(P.S. Sega seems to be full of awesomeness all of a sudden. I never follow company blogs, but now I'm starting to visit the Sega blog quite frequently.)

@proffrink1986 Sega does what Capcom doesn't.
