@KaiserGX: if he doesn't find it interesting enough to continue, it's his call. the battle system doesn't really change throughout the entire game, after all, so if he doesn't like it now he's still not gonna like it after another five, ten, fifteen hours of it. plus, he can always look up a plot synopsis or some YouTube videos to see how things turned out in the end (in all the ends, actually). :3

Of course the battle in CHRONO TRIGGER can be changed. Anytime!!

It's boring for me on standard "WAIT battle mode" as well, so I always play this with "ACTIVE battle mode" and on highest speed settings (look it up in the options menu)
It's a big change but the game is much harder and faster and that's how I like my Chrono Trigger.

Now I know why I'm so far ahead of my Chrono Trigger competition with all my characters being at level 60 in just 20 hours of playing time.
Everyone else is playing this game in the slow WAIT mode hahaha!

@SKTTR: the enemy can hit you at any time, but you're still stuck waiting for your dudes' turns to come up even in Active battle mode, lol. :3

Spoiler

@ocarinaoftime I've beaten it. My favorite ending is the one where everybody dies.

Curse you Turn Based combat, because that aside which i didn't mind in the beginning but grew tired of it hours on in, i loved everything else about the game. From the plot, the worlds(especially in the current time), the characters and yadah yadah....If only Chrono Trigger had a more Zelda-ish/Star Tropics-like combat system.

I wish most action RPGs would copy Zelda as well. When I first bought Chrono Trigger I was expecting it to be more like Secret of Mana. It was disappointing at first but I'm a Final Fantasy fan too, so I got over it. The combat system is actually one of the best aspects of the game. The characters are a different story. None of them are very complex.

I've just downloaded CT on VC. Right at the beginning, I see at least the enemy scream sound effect sounds right. That's one sound effect I think I've only recently seen one fan emulator get that right. So hopefully that means the other sounds that most emulators butchered (including the official PS1 version) come out right. (well, the DS as well, but since it was a remake it was expected that they'd get the sound right)

I've downloaded the VC edition today. I like being able to play it on the big screen for the first time ever here in Europe.

Sigh*
If only I would of known this at the time, i ended up selling my copy of CT for the DS on eBay.
How faster exactly does it make the battles anyways?

Because in all honestly, it was the constant waiting and slow fighting that killed it for me. If it's sped and reved up I'm sure it would of been more enjoyable....Oh well, i can always download it on the VC. But I basically spoiled 2 of the endings for myself by reading a few of the coments on this Thread, yay me.lol

I'm playing it on active as well, since it's the default setting - but I also have it at the default speed which I believe is 5.
It's obviously still about sifting through the menus, but everything goes faster and is a lot tougher (and requires good reflexes, especially when you need to switch from a damage tech to a heal tech).
I should probably finish this soon, I have all the sidequests done and just need to take down Lavos.
