I love the VC for the simple fact that I didn't really get into console gaming myself until the last generation with the Gamecube. I grew up with the C64, Amiga, and PC. So there are a ton of games I missed out on. I only got to play console games at department stores via their display units. Kinda sad really. Anyway, it's nice to delve into these older classics, especially as I find their gameplay more appealing than a lot of today's games.

Yeah, I know I hurt some people's feelings when I diss the Atari 2600, same as you do mine dissing my favorite systems. Rapidly advancing technology does much to create gaps between generations of gamers.
I have never met someone who defends the 2600 era. It has no classics and managed to destroy console gaming. The SNES era, on the other hand, had lots of great titles that helped make gaming what it is today.
I think the 8-bit era ushered gaming back after all the idiot game companies of the Atari 2600 era all tried to turn their game consoles into cheap computers. But there were still plenty of classics to come out of the era, just more dumb decisions than classics.

I had a quick look at your list Corbie. I know some of them like Yar's Revenge, Asteroids, Galaxian etc. If i paid for one of them I would feel severely ripped off. However, I am willing to give one of them a shot, as you are Corbert the great. What is your favourite from the list there? I promise I'll play it ESEP. Oh, and you forgot Custer's Revenge. That's the one 2600 game I've actually played in it's 2600 form (as opposed to arcade).

Yeah, but now days the only real value they have is nostalgia; that was my main point. Anyway, off to find a dodgy ROM site. Yay!
I didn't say they did. I know that many people won't find them as appealing as those of us who enjoyed them in the day. One of my niece's friends told me the other day that he couldn't understand why anyone would want to play a VC game as they all looked terrible and played even worse. He actually called Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, "blocky gaming garbage!
I played Garou: Mark of the Wolves recently for the first time but just could not see what was so great about it. It just seemed like an average fighting game to me. I think that its because I didn't play it originally when it was first released that I'm spoiled by all the newer fighting games.
In comparison though, I do love playing Street Fighter Alpha 2 and can still enjoy it even today even though I started playing it when it was first released.
I think nostalgia does play a part in playing retro games - you won't always develop a bond to a retro game if you first played it today than if you played it when it was first released.

I didn't play Garou until about 3 years ago and I find it the deepest fighting game I've ever played. I spent over a month just trying to get one character down to where I could last in a competition. And it took me almost a year to get to where I could actually compete against some of the better players around here. I read every guide, memorized every strategy, all the just defends and special moves, etc.
Or maybe I'm finding myself not being able to bother putting the dedication into learning new fighting games. New Street Fighter games I can pick up just fine since you can mostly apply the skills you learned from previous games to the newer games.

Adamant is also a strong defender of the 2600, or at least he had a problem with me dissing it the way I was on the thread about 2600 games on VC. I never did get my dad's old system hooked up, either. I think he'd let me (he knows I want to, or at least I told him, whether he remembers now or not), but getting the right chance is still a pain.
Anyway, I want to know this, Corbie: How much do you think a 2600 game is worth today? Even the BEST game on the system? Personally, from what little I know of the system (and I still doubt this is subject to change given my general gaming tastes), I'd feel ripped off paying more than $1 for one of those things. Heck, even the $1 might be too much! Sorry if that hurts you, Corbie. If I liked the system, this kind of talk would hurt me. That thing you posted that kid said about Mario 64 and OoT hurts me, and I didn't get a 64 until somewhere around '02-'03!

Well truth be told, unless you're someone who has a nostalgic connection to the system, the games will likely not be worth much to you. And I'll be honest with you, I don't mind other people dissing or not liking a game system. I like what I like, but I don't expect others to. I like having these discussions, but I'm not really trying to change people's opinions, just expressing my own.
So...do you agree that the NES is more likely to attract gamers without nostalgia for the system than the 2600?
I believe that the NES and SNES (especially the SNES) can easily draw the attention of newer gamers, but the N64 may have a harder time doing so because let's face it; early 3D SUCKS! PS1 3D is worse, of course, but still...it IS a problem, I think. Of course, closed-minded gamers will just miss out on everything. Such a shame!

I think the more recent you get, the more likely you are to attract gamers without Nostalgia. Mainly because as time has gone on, games have become more and more like the recent game releases.
No exceptions for the ugliness and generally questionable controls of the N64 and PS1, huh? I've always been of the opinion that SNES>PS1/N64 in the graphics department, but I realize I may be in a minority on that one.

I grew up with SNES, GB, & N64. Back then, Nintendo released good Virtual Console games... and now they don't! But again, the ONLY good games they released were Majora's Mask, Earthworm Jim & the Mega Man games.
