Topic: How Much Longer Will the Wii VC Be Available?

It's only as of recently that I've decided to go back and start looking into some of the other VC games released on the service that I hadn't made a priority in the past, and as I look at the list of things I'm interested in, I realize it's still a pretty big and fairly costly list of games. But then I started to think of something else. It's obvious that Nintendo is no longer supporting the service and we're slowly seeing games get taken off the service with time, but how much longer does the service have you think? Before Nintendo pulls the plug on it?

A part of this comes from the fact that I'm afraid of the possibility of them pulling the plug before I buy all of the titles that I'm intending to buy as of now. And with an interest in multiple titles, I'm starting to agonize about that potential and as to which ones I should buy as soon as possible and which ones I'm comfortable with waiting on. I figure I should commit to the TG-16 games I want as third party consoles don't seem to be a reality of the Wii U VC, and then I'm also worried about Square Enix games and the fact that they may never support the Wii U as well. Regardless of my own personal worries, I'd still like to hear what people think about the longevity of the service!

They have just added PC Engine (TG16) to 3ds and Wii U VC in Japan. Square Enix they waited a long time last time before releasing the best stuff. (They are releasing stuff old Square and Tatio stuff but they are doing it. And on stuff that is far less likely to sell in any quantity I think anyway.)

Wasn't aware of what Japan was getting in terms of VC, I just kind of assumed the same as the rest of us since I'd heard people talk about not having third party systems on Wii U VC. I was wrong in doing so, though it does remind me that I used to salivate over what Japan was getting in the monthly updates that this site used to have.

Still PC Engine was much a bigger thing in Japan then elsewhere so it's no guarantee that we'll get it over here, but it helps that it is available on those services now.

I don't think first party will be affected soon, but you might want to buy 3rd party games ASAP

Wii Shop seems to use the same servers as Wii U shop so I don't see the point of closing it down completely

There will be games that will be lost forever like Yoshi´s Cookie or Commodore 64 games. Maybe the remain games will be slowly pass to Wii U but I don´t think all games will do it like Factor 5 or Lucas Arts games.

I believe that the Wii Shop will eventually be merged with the Wii U eshop with any games not released on the Wii U VC being placed in a new Wii VC section in the eshop, but that likely won't happen for quite awhile.

The only stuff gets lost forever is stuff that was never kept. (The closing of the Nintendo Wifi Connection will lose stuff - There is loads of Satalleview stuff that is also lost).

They won't be lost if you got an SD card and keep a backup of the files on another storage device like your PC. As long as your same Wii still works you can just copy it back and play it.

Did the LucasArts SNES games disappear from Wii VC?

I had high hopes for the Wii U VC, But week after week of disappointing releases and no new news on other platforms (Dreamcast, Saturn, GC......), I have resorted back to my plugging in my old consoles to play them.

Yes, I have been wondering the same that why has Sega not invested in the Wii U VC yet. They have an amazing archive of Dreamcast and Saturn releases they could release there now that the size is no issue anymore with external hard drives. Same could be done to other lesser known consoles like Amiga CD32. Still waiting for Commodore Amiga in general to come to Wii U VC since it was a no show on Wii VC.

On Nintendo's part I don't understand why they don't release 3-4 games per week in all regions, they should have now already a big selection available from all their previous platforms. There is no need to spotlight like one game per week or even less than that. The GC games especially would sell a ton, but they need to rethink their pricing, the current pricing is a bit insane in my opinion. It has always been also on Wii a bit insane. All the NES/Master System games should have been 2€ a piece and SNES/Mega Drive games 4€.

It would help the Wii U a lot if they would just put out a lot of games constantly.

I don't think that the WiiShop closes down in 2014 or 2015. They still sell VC and WiiWare games and WiiWare manuals are only accessible through the Wii-Shopping channel.

I don't think it will happen any time soon. How many Wii systems are still in homes? And like other posters have said, I don't see a point in Nintendo closing down the servers until all titles are on the WiiU eShop.

I don't think we will ever see all Wii VC over on the Wii U. I can't think of any logical reason why nintendo are delaying releasing the over systems like N64. I am hoping M2 expand and start managing the VC for Nintendo. They are doing a fantastic job on the 3DS with 3D Classics

I'd figure I might as well bump this since we already have a thread.

At this point I've gotten the majority of the VC titles I want that came out in the North American region. What I do want, however, is to be able to also get the Japanese VC games that are on the Japanese Wii Shop Channel. It'd mean I'd have to import a Japanese Wii but it's worth it to get the chance to play many games that never got released over here. But I'm not sure how much time I have left before the whole Wii VC service gets taken down and I also really want to get another PS2 before games start to get expensive to buy.

Should I expect the Wii VC to be up for a couple more years or do I need to get the games I want before the year ends? I want to make sure so I can plan accordingly on what I want to do with game purchases.

I'd say the most likely time to worry about the Wii Shop closing is when Nintendo unveil the next console.

But damn, the store will be celebrating 10 years of service next year, 10 years! Perhaps you can celebrate with a long overdue Sale Nintendo? XD
