Topic: How much longer will the Virtual Console be around on the Wii?

I'm very curious about this, because Project NX is supposed to be coming out in less then a year. How much longer will Nintendo keep the Virtual Console on the Wii around?

Do you honestly think so? It would cost Nintendo money.

Right, but the Wii has such a large userbase that I'm sure that Nintendo still makes money off of it. If it no longer seems profitable, then I'm sure Nintendo will close it down.

...They have some catching up to do between the Wii and Wii U VC first before this happens, though.

For about as long as it continues to stay up.

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

As long as they still have downloads of some kind then it probably doesn't cost them much money at all. Especially given how small VC titles are relative to other content and how small the number of downloads will be over time. Combined with rapidly reducing bandwidth and storage costs.

I think they won't take it down until they have got all the Wii virtual console games on Wii U/ NX

I would not be surprised if Publishers/Developers signed so very loooong licensing deals after seeing how well the Wii sold....

Hopefully they don't shut it down anytime soon and leave us stuck with the pathetic Wii U VC lineup.

Its not actually that bad really. The lack of NeoGeo and Genesis games are a small price to pay for GBA, DS and Wii games

I think it'll depend on how VC works on NX if at all. Will Nintendo ditch VC in favour of the Nintendo Classic Mini approach? If not. will it be a straight up transfer from Wii U to NX like Wii to Wii U? Will the cloud be involved hence transfers of save data being like 360 to XB1?

There's plenty of other possible questions which put together would give an insight of whether Wii VC is shutting down. That said, if it was then I'd expect the Wii U VC quantity to step up this holiday (e.g. something like 3 games per week from November onwards).

@Bass_X0 You may as well add N64 to the lack of list for NA. I think EU only has F-Zero X, Smash 64 and Pokemon Puzzle League left to obtain of the Wii VC games but NA has many more to obtain like Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, Majora's Mask, etc.

It's more than that even with the recent addition of F-Zero X since your post.

For titles that appeared over there on the original Virtual Console, Europe's Wii U VC is still lacking Bomberman Hero, Cruis'n USA, and Ogre Battle 64. And that's in addition to the last two that you mentioned.

I hope North America gets Mario Kart 64 and Majora's Mask soon, then all the titles that I'll likely ever be able to upgrade will have been done (Since I don't see SimCity reappearing or even hold out any hope for my 3rd party titles on various platforms).

I've downloaded all the N64 games on Wii U eshop so far. Thankfully I had already downloaded many on Wii so it didn't cost me that much. The only N64 games I have left to upgrade are Super Smash Bros. and Ogre Battle.

If they only begin to put Turbografx games in Wii U... (only 3 in months?)

With the announcement of the Switch I am kinda wondering this myself now. Granted there are other means of getting these games when Nintendo does shut down the Wii Shop servers but still.

All it has to do is pay its cost to justify keeping it online. It's likely bringing in much more even in late 2016 than it cost to keep the service active with server fees and routine maintenance.

And it wouldn't surprise me if a fair number of Wii's are still being used as Netflix boxes and so on (Especially in bedrooms and such, where as the lack of HD likely has pushed it out of the living room for most users), which is further justification to keep the Wii Shop channel online.

I never messed around with most of the video streaming stuff on the Wii (Just the Nintendo Channel and the YouTube channel), but not only is the Wii Shop how you download these channels to your Wii, but I also imagine it's how they must be updated, which likely is how something like Netflix can still be an active proposition on the Wii despite all the time that has passed since it first appeared.

Hey guys! I was just searching through the interwebs and came across this forum. I trust this community as I have been a NintendoLifer for a few years now.

Can you still add funds and make purchases on the Wii Virtual Console? I am leaning towards buying a cheap Wii for the GameCube backwards compatibility and playing some Wii games I missed. My Wii U is the first Nintendo console I have owned since the N64 lol. As I dug around and did some research, I found out that the Wii has an amazing virtual console and includes a lot of awesome Sega Genesis and N64 games that I want to play from my youth. I just want to see if it's possible for me to actually do the following:

a) Sync up my Nintendo Account ID (the same one thats on my Wii U and 3DS)
b) Still make new purchases on the Wii Virtual Console (it's now 2017)

@Tasuki If you download some Wii Virtual Console games, do they remain on your system even after the service has been shutdown? I don't want to buy some games if I lose them.

@Nintendofan83 Hello! The games remain on your Wii whenever Nintendo decides to discontinue the service.
You cannot sync up your Nintendo Network ID, as that was introduced for the 3DS in 2011, the Wii runs on a different system.
You can still buy things from the Wii virtual console and transfer them to the Wii U if you want, but the process is one way.
Funds can also still be added.
I hope that answers all of your questions!
