Topic: Fleeting moments in Majora's Mask

One of my favorite things about Majora's Mask is how many different little details and moments are stashed away in the game. You could play through it to 100% completion, and not actually see everything. The characters operate on schedules of their own, and while the Bomber's Notebook keeps you abreast of the big stuff, there are plenty of little moments tucked away that you might not notice.

Playing through this time, which will be the fourth or fifth time for me (including back in the N64 days obviously...not five times since the VC re-release) I've already encountered a few things I don't think I have before.

  • After the little monkey teaches you the Song of Awakening, you can re-enter the King's chamber instead of going straight to the temple. If you do, you'll be able to watch the monkey getting tortured. (Damned disturbing for a Nintendo game!) And if the view isn't good enough, go stand next to the king and the monkey will get a green target around him. Press the action button and you'll get a full-on, close up view of the poor monkey being dipped in scalding oil, and then going catatonic. Holy @#$%^.
  • On the rainy day in Clock Town (day 2?) you can follow Anju the place Kafei is hiding out. She sits on the bench in the rain, and breaks down in tears. As many times as I've been through the Anju/Kafei story, I keep finding little things like this that are really affecting.
  • The postman goes for a midnight (appx) jog on the evening of day 2. He won't talk to you, and he's not delivering mail. Is it just nerves? Taken in conjunction with his "night of the third day" nervous breakdown, this is pretty distressing.
  • On a lighter note, I looked through the astronomer's telescope today (can't remember the game-time though) and saw what looked like the banker sitting in some bushes and tossing leaves(?) around like a little boy. Couldn't zoom in very close, and when I went to find him on foot, he was gone. Never seen that happen before!
  • The organ-grinder guy...when you talk to him and he gives you the Bremen Mask...his tale of woe actually reads like lyrics to the music he is playing. You may have noticed this before, but it was a huge and happy revelation for me. If you haven't noticed, try it! Seek him out and night, and read his words in time to the tune. Really cool.

There are obviously loads of other "hidden" moments in Majora's Mask. Care to share any you've found?

Man. I beat the game years ago. And forgot some easter eggs. I always focused on getting the Fierce Diety's Mask before I beat it. My favorite mask.

Going to the Swordsman's School when the moon is looming large, he's hiding out back, trembling in fear!
Tis beautiful, and I only wished I could console him.

Day 2 and those final hours gifted some real treats to those who care to look, and playing match-maker to Anju & Kafei you felt really involved. I hope the Bombers Notebook returns in some form in a future Zelda. Making people happy and watching them go about there business made Majora's Mask the classic it is, as you felt so much closer to the characters, and of course, there doom.

Oh man, I forgot about that. Yeah, that's an awesome one.

Also, if you go to the hags' potion shop on day 1, there's one hag inside telling you that the other one went into the forest and didn't return. But today I went there on day 2 (for the first time, so I hadn't saved the second hag) and as you enter the screen, you'll see the hag who is normally in the shop flying into the woods. You can then find her searching the woods for her friend. Just a great little touch that shows she's sincerely worried, and not just hanging around behind a counter all day waiting for some little elf dude to wander in and fix everything.

Are you still a Deku Scrub? You can't really do anything until you turn back into a human. If you ARE a human you've got loads of options, but if you're a scrub you need to meet the kid in Northern Clock Town, find him and his friends in a game of hide and seek...and a few other things. Let me know where you're stuck, specifically.

Yeah I remember that now, wow. That game lives and breathes, the programming that went into all the off screen stuff is immense. I also loved talking to people whilst wearing various masks, the different responses you got were great.

I cheated on my last run through, wearing the stone-mask half the time. I should play it again, properly. Thanks for the prompt Chicken. Forgive me for my earlier sins. lol

@SUPERZELDAMAN: Learn to abuse time. Have a chat with the scarecrow if you're not sure. But if you are still stuck in Deku form you need to complete the 1st lil dungeon and grab the Ocarina when you face the Majora imp thing.

By "dungeon" do you mean the clock tower on the third night? If so, just go in there as usual, and hit the skull kid with your Deku Bubbles. He'll drop the ocarina, you then play the Song of Time, and the Mask Salesman will restore you to human form. Once you do that, you'll enjoy the game much more.

If ur talking about the Forest Dungeon, you can always play the Song of Time backwards (Down C, A, Right C, Repeat), which should double the available time. If you still die while in a dungeon, you can use the Song of Soaring to reach the entrance of the dungeon qwiker. Hope that helped.

I can play any Zelda game bildfolded... just kidding! I'm just joking; because I can play Zelda games & know exactly where everything is at!

I'm just that good of a Zelda player; & I do enjoy re-playing Zelda all of the time! Reason is I never gets tired of my favorite classic Zelda games; they always hold a dear place in my heart!

When I'm playing my Zelda games though...
Has to be when I'm in the mood to listen to the right kind of music! I prefer Backstreet Boys & Keith Urban when going through specific favorite dungeons in Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask... being the Water Temple in OoT & Woodfall in MM!

My favorite Zelda MM Secrets though...
I always can't resist pulling out the Captain's Hat in front of Ingos De Ikana at the Ikana Castle; I mean it's just too darn funny! "OH... is it not Captain KETTA?! Buy you're so... TINY! LOL!
And of course along with that is pulling out the Bremen's Mask & making the Ikana soldies of Ingos De Ikana march to the super sweet & upbeat tune! Always puts a smile on my face!

Ooh, ooh, I've got one!

Watching the world go by from the observatory. From there you can...
-Get a glimpse of those weird crow enemies and their strange flight and migratory patterns? The fly in cool formations. y'know.
-Follow the part time working Item Shop guy on his quest for cash.
-Watch the Buisness Scrubs fly by and change shops to set up elsewhere after trading them a deed.
...and if I can remember correctly,
-See the Skull Kid wreak havoc upon Termina.

Wow, I feel the exact same about this game as you guys.
There was so much time, and effort put into that game.

Majora's Mask overall contains an upsetting nature, a generous helping of a sense of foreboding, with a hint of discomforting.

And yet still the feeling of hope prevails.

I'm also in the middle of replaying it now (just finished the Ocean temple and gathered all the fairies), and I love these little moments of the types you've listed. People complain about the time limit, but for once, you get to play a game where characters follow their own courses rather than everything just waiting for the player to trigger it.

I'm also quite fond of the added difficulty of finding all the fairies in each dungeon. Adds a nice little extra challenge, especially if you're determined to win the dungeon and find every fairy on your first time through--it ends up being enough time, but you feel the pressure of needing to move quickly in order to accomplish it.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

If you talk to the Sword School guy, he will say something different for every single mask that you're wearing.

Fuzzy

I need to spend more time just wandering around in this game to see what i can find. I would like to know what the Goron postman does for the whole 3 days, for example.

Fuzzy, Backloggery.

KoKoO_Psy

My favorite has been mentioned.
But final hours with the post man, made me feel so much sorrow and disspare on his behalf, i wanted to help him. However the first time I saw him in that state, I couldn't, and it practically broke my heart having to go back, without helping him.

CowLaunch

I like the fact that the Zora band teaches you The Ballad of the Windfish, which is from Link's Awakening.

Rensch

Yeah, I've completed three dungeons but I've only got about eight hearts. I'm still missing a lot of sidequests that I need to complete.

Really adds up to the replayability of the game. It also adds an emotional aspect to the game since you can't do everything you ned to make decisions on what characters to help.
