@Atariboy I meant legal emulators. On a side note, I kinda regret buying ogre battle 64 on wii shop becuase it turns out it's also available on the Wii U shop and it'd be really nice to have proper save states.

While I know what you're saying and share similar thoughts (I also appreciate official options to enjoy classic games on modern hardware, even when superior homebrew options are available at no cost), there's actually nothing inherently illegal with emulators for systems like the NES, SNES, and Genesis.

They're all patent expired and the internal guts have reverted to the public domain (And there's no internal software like an operating system that would have copyright protection which lasts decades). The legality issue comes when you download copyrighted software to use with one, since no commercial videogame software has been out long enough to be copyright expired.

That's why something like the Retron 5 can legally exist without being bothered by a company like Nintendo. It's all just software emulation and it plays original cartridges. Of course the Retron 5 itself isn't the best of examples for legality I suppose, since it utilizes freeware emulators while not respecting the license terms that the creators of those emulators put in place.

In other words, they stole someone else's work by essentially not having permission to use it in the way they've done so, by their refusal to abide by the licensing terms under stuff like GPL (Like by releasing any changes to the code that they've made). But where the original platform holders are concerned, these emulation boxes are non-infringing (As are high end FPGA recreations like the Analogue NT Mini/Super NT and the Retro USB AVS that are presently in vogue for dedicated classic gaming enthusiasts that want to enjoy their favorite games in the best possible quality on their HDTV).

Just a friendly reminder that the Wii shop no longer accepts money in about 12 days.

Just got my Genesis and VC Arcade titles. Sonic 1, 2, and 3 actually supports the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on feature if you have them all.

WiiWare, TG16, NES, and SNES left to go. Ugh, my WiiWare list, though

This is why it sucks not knowing what the Switch VC plans are.

I've got too many Wii Shop products this winter/spring... the latest were Pulseman and Excitebike World Rally or something.

I also got a (cheap) second SD card to download copies of the games (and maybe savegames) to. My old one is probably closer to ten years old and I wouldn't be surprised if the card died before the system.

I tried to buy cheaper points considering the fact they would be useless after today, but sellers are stubborn and I couldn't. I won't have tried Wii Channel games, then. And there were a couple I was interested in. No, I'm not going to pay full price for the points.

Hey Nintendo Family,

Unfortunately I had not been paying attention to all the news and was unaware of the mar 26 cut off date. IF ANYONE HAS WII POINTS THEY DON'T NEED AND ARE ABLE TO GIFT THEM TO ME I WILL PAY TOP DOLLAR. Ask for PM info if interested.

Over the past few weeks I've bought a lot of VC and Wiiware games that I had been wanting. Rather than split the post into two threads, I'll post the Wiiware games that I bought too:

VC
Spinmaster
Aero the Acrobat
Pokémon Snap
Ocarina of Time
Sonic and Knuckles
Toejam and Earl

Wiiware
Bomberman Blast
Strong Bad Episode 1 (to complete the series)
Carmen Sandiego Vol 4
Pinnochio's Puzzle

And I added 2000 points just before the deadline, so now I have to decide what my final Wii Shop Channel games will be. End of an era

Sure it does and will continue to do so until January 31, 2019.

What was ended the other day was the ability to purchase Wii points (Although if one had a Wii points card left sitting around, I wouldn't be surprised if a redemption code still would work to add credit), not the ability to redeem your Wii points.

The Wii Shop will be accepting Wii points for another 10 months.

Can anyone confirm if point cards work?

Nintendo said that you can no longer add any points to the shop at this point. You can still purchase games though

I don't think you're going to find anyone that's able to test it.

But I can say from 1st hand experience that if you have a redemption code for a delisted Xbox 360 download, they still work. It was already activated, so in essence that copy already exists. All that's left is for it to be assigned to an account. Microsoft doesn't prohibit it, so Nintendo may also allow it in this similar circumstance.

But Nintendo stopped selling these physical Wii Points cards years ago (I haven't seen one since about 2010). And it was before they switched to register activation of these things, so standalone Wii Points cards were sealed in plastic for protection since they're pre-activated. So I imagine anyone with one today probably views it as worth more as a sealed collectible than for the potential 2,000 Wii Points that still may be redeemable inside of it.

And the entire point of how they're gradually shutting down the Wii Shop is to make sure that customers that don't read gaming news sites or the Wii Shop news notices don't end up with an unspendeable Wii Points balance. It would run counter to that policy for Nintendo to prevent someone that stumbles across a long forgotten Wii Points card over the next few months and attempts to redeem it before the Wii Shop goes offline, to not let them access those 2,000 points that have already been paid for.

So I bet you could, if you actually had a card.

My local shops all sell e-shop cards that say Wii, Wii-U, Switch on them so wonder if they’ll work? I got my fix of final games just before the deadline so don’t need to try, but I’m curious to know.

Octane

@Memva There's no eShop on the Wii, so I don't think so.

Yeah it just mentions Wii on the card’s packaging so assume it at least added the equivalent points before they removed the ability to add points.
