I'm just starting to get into the FF world, so this is a must for me. I might be able to get my sis to join, too.

Pop Quiz: Whats Final Fantasy called in Japan?

Answer: Mystical Quest. Which brings an interesting question to mind what is this game called in Japan Mystical Quest: Mystical Quest. Or perhaps Mystical Quest: Final Fantasy.

A little digging shows this info is courtesy of an OFLC rating. Good old ratings boards letting us in on upcoming release secrets again.

I've actually never finished this game, even though I've made several attempts. Perhaps ease of access in my room would be enough? One thing's for sure: Day-one download, if only to support Squenix on VC.

My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P

This game was originally released as Final Fantasy USA in Japan because Americans couldn't handle tough Japanese RPGs and they felt the need to dumb down games for us. This was after we got Final Fantasy IV Easytype which was released here as Final Fantasy II on the SNES. Ah, ignorance was bliss. It was better when I didn't know the Japanese looked down on Americans in the 80s and 90s. Super Mario USA was more fun than what the real Super Mario Bros. 2 would have been during my childhood though.

What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.

How do you think us Europeans feel? We had to wait until we got Final Fantasy VII!

If things stayed the same, you'd be probably on Final Fantasy X (since you missed out on IIj, IIIj and Vj) and we'd be on Final Fantasy VII (If FInal Fantasy VII was just simply called Final Fantasy here).

That'd be confusing....Final Fantasy XIIIj, Final Fantasy Xa and Final Fantasy VIIe. XD

I made do with Final Fantasy Legend III. Now there's a game that deserves to be remade on the DS.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

@Relevant Latty: I dunno, in terms of gaming, Europeans have it pretty good nowadays. I'm pretty jealous with EU releases compared to NA in recent years. Additionally, I'm speaking about having been provided dumbed down versions of games rather than localizing the original games, its not really exactly the same as your argument. Also, what ticks me off is the idea of "USA" versions as the ultra easy mode version of actual games being provided to Japanese domestic releases, I feel this attitude leads to many games not being considered for localized release for the West on account of them being too difficult for us stupid Americans.

More so, this was made specifically to introduce new players to RPGs, as it even said on the US cover.

Right, it was not some sort of insult to our skill level, but an acknowledgment that the genre was not popular or understood in the west. It was an introduction to the genre, not really a "dumbing down" of the genre. Given how few RPGs made it to the west, and how very poorly translated they were, it was understandable that gamers over here did not really understand the games.

FFIV Easytype and FF2 (NA Release) are not the same game. The easy type version was released in Japan after NA already got Final Fantasy 2 (FFIV). While the NA version is easier than the Japanese version it is not the same as Easytype. Easytype is actually easier than the NA version.

Some have said the final dungeon is actually harder in the Easy Type version.

I don't think that was released in England...

I still remember when Nintendo Power claimed Mystic Quest was the European title for Final Fantasy, because the only two FF-related games released there at the time were Seiken Densetsu 1/Final Fantasy Adventure (renamed Mystic Quest) and FFMQ (renamed Mystic Quest Legend), neither of them canon games.

@sykotek, I stand corrected. My mistake but the link to the article you posted doesn't say much.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV/Version_D...

But there were enough changes made, not just cosmetically, from FFIV Easy Type Japan to the NA version that the game experience is different.

@kingmike

according to the link above all the enemies and final bosses battle scripts for the final areas were changed so it might be more difficult to some, I've never played the Easy Type version so I couldn't say for sure if it's harder or just different.

On topic, FFMQ is a great starter RPG, it lacks the depth of the canon FF games but it's a fun little game on it's own. Anybody else notice that Benjamin's (FFMQ) over world sprite and Bartz (FFV) over world sprite are similar or is that just me?
