I dunno FF fans can usually give reasons why they like them, most SMRPG fans give the terrible reason of it being their first RPG, or the first Mario RPG.

Oh, i'm sooo sorry I have an opinion. How's this?

  • I like the story
  • I like the characters
  • I like that everything isn't just a straightforward "Talk to person A, deliver item B to point C" scenario
  • I like the fact that it lets you interact with attacks to make them stronger instead of just having the game doing everything for you automatically
  • I like that it has a ton of additional games on the side so you don't get completely bored with it

And that's all I say on that for now.

this shouldnt be a question! Final Fantasy IV by far!
why i like FFIV more than SMRPG:

  • a story that progresses a lot more
  • a lot more challenging
  • more party members
  • bigger variety of weapons and armor
  • more customization (in SMRPG, every guy can only have 1 piece of armor on and only use 1 type of weapon)
  • more magic attacks and unique character abilities
  • longer
  • bigger variety of enemies
  • better music

Suoer mario RPG. It's just a timeless classic. It's fun, it's funny, the graphics are great, great music/classic music, record setting (by this I mean this is the very first time Mario and Bowser team up against a different evil), the game's just balanced very well, free roaming was very nice, pretty long running you around 15-20 hours or so depending, awesome enemies, memorable boss battles, unique weapons and armor, memorable characters, etc.

It's just a great game.

Just for you.

In terms of 'which provides a truly epic RPG experience', definitely FFIV. However, note that I've played SMRPG through probably upwards of fifteen times over the years, whereas i've played FFIV exactly twice -- once as a part of FFChronicles, the other being the DS remake. It's just not often that i'm interested enough to settle down with such a long game that takes itself so deadly serious. SMRPG is the kind of good, Mario-related fun that i crave, with just enough RPG elements and story to keep me satisfied; FFIV, though it is excellent, is too depressing for a casual playthrough IMO.

actually, come to think of it, i think i'd love SMRPG no matter what characters were in it. Sure, the fact that it's got Mario-series characters in it is a plus, but so much of the story has absolutely nothing to do with the main Mario series as we know it that it may as well have just had other random protagonists and an entirely different setting, and i bet i'd still love it to bits.

If i had a novelized version of FFIV, i'd read the hell out of it, but if i have to slog through the entire game every time, scraping by at the skin of my teeth, no thanks. Once (or twice) was enough.

I probably shouldn't converse in this thread considering I've only played Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (my very first RPG ever). I can't wait to play Final Fantasy II/IV [NA/JP] someday.

I couldn't ever really get into FFIV for whatever reason. I played SMRPG and had a blast.

Well, considering SMRPG is my #1 favorite game of all time...

Truthfully, they shouldn't be put in the same category. Here's why:

SMRPG

  • Uses a lot more humor, and the script is just excellent. Its a lot more lighthearted than an FF game.
  • You can press the A button right before an attack hits to cause more damage, immersing you a lot more into the action.
  • The characters are very memorable and each have personality.
  • Best music on the SNES
  • Graphics. These are the best on the SNES, and the pseudo-3D look makes it gorgeous.
  • Gameplay changes every now and then. You'd first enter a section, fight some enemies, then have to solve Zelda-like puzzles or riddles, then fight the boss. There's also a casino in the game, and you can purchase a Gameboy in the game to play Beetle Mania.

FFIV

  • Great script and story, but a lot less humor.
  • You don't get into the fight as much, as you only make battle selections for the character, then watch it happen.
  • Each character has a personality, but are in different leagues than the humorous characters of SMRPG.
  • Pretty good music, but not as good as SMRPG's.
  • Graphics on the SNES version don't seem as good as SMRPG's. But then again, I've only played the DS version.
  • Gameplay is repetitive and un-diverse. You'd start in a city, buy equipment, go to dungeon, grind with UNSEEABLE ENEMIES ala random encounters, then fight some extremely hard boss. Sure, it works, but I'd rather be able to experience some puzzle solving or at least be able to SEE my enemies before I encounter them.

Considering these factors, I thought SMRPG was a much more fun experience, but that's not to say FFIV is bad. No, its a great game, but cannot stand up to SMRPG's diverse gameplay and genius design. I'm sure a lot more people would've seen that if SMRPG were a bit more difficult and longer.

Super Mario RPG is better.

Nintendork

Well, Final Fantasy was actually somewhat fun. So....................................yeah, FF4 wins by default. :3

That's why you're still a kid.

Uncalled for and insulting comment was uncalled for and insulting.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was my first RPG ever, and I find it to be entertaining and really fun. And I enjoyed the timed attack battle system. But, if you don't like it, than that's all right; everyone is entitled to their opinion [and if Waltz reads this end statement, he'd better not assume I'm a hermit again!].

I've yet to play Final Fantasy II/IV [NA/JP], but I hope to someday; it sounds good from what I've looked up and the review I've read.

Not really as most times when I've asked why people enjoy SMRPG, those are the most popular reasons.

StarBoy91

Well, I've got countless reasons as to why Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is one of my favorite RPGs.
But, if you don't like it, Digiki, I don't mind. To each his own.
EDIT: the reason I said insulting was 'cause you said "terrible" reasons.

This.

So, Super Mario RPG for me.

@StarBoy: nostalgia is a pretty lame reason to recommend an RPG to someone else if it's all you've got going for it, mainly because your fond memories playing it as a kid won't be around for that person when they go to try it out. as for it being the first Mario RPG also being a lame reason, i'd disagree -- it's like suggesting any other 'first' game in a series; if you've played all the rest (or plan to), you may as well give the one that started it all a go, though if you're only going to play one Mario-based RPG in your entire life even I'd suggest Paper Mario instead. Digiki may have put it bluntly, but if you step back and try to look at it from the point of view of someone who genuinely did not enjoy the game, he hasn't insulted anyone.
