Just beat this last night. Very solid game in my opinion.

The doors staying locked didn't bug me too much. However, not being able to sell the Jack keys later in the game burned me. Also, as far as I could tell there are only two areas to use the wing boots. I was expecting more areas needing them, and consequently carried a pair of wing boots and a jack key through to the end of the game.

On a similar note, I was expecting more walls that needed the Mattock (Pick Axe). However, I only ever found that one (regenerating) wall. Perhaps there is a sweet hidden store behind a wall somewhere that I never found?

After beating it I fired up Zelda 2 again and played until I got the hammer. Zelda certainly is more polished, but Faxanadu has a certain charm that I really liked.

Can anyone comment on similarities between Faxanadu and Ys? I have been interested in trying Ys since reading the excellent review that Ys Book I & II got on this site.



Ys Book I & II is not at all like Faxanadu.
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (not available on VC) is a side-scrolling action-RPG like Zelda II or Faxanadu, but I can't comment beyond that.

Still, I highly recommend Ys Book I & II. It's pretty similar to Crystalis if you've ever played that.



I know this is an old thread but I'm going to try any way. I've got Faxanadu as a ROM and I think the ROM is jacked up. When I'm in the tower of Fraternal on my way to the Castle...if you follow the map all the way down the middle then try to go to the can't go anywhere. It's like there is a wall. So basically there is no way for me to continue the game.

I know that there is a guru in the castle of Fraternal. So does anyone have a mantra I could use to hopefully "warp" myself past this glitch?
