Thanks man. I had no idea the Elixir did anything at all...I thought it was just some item to give to the old man. Bah.

I did have plenty of red potions, but the first time he killed me I didn't have time to equip it. The second time he killed me I had it equipped, but accidentally fired off some magic instead. Double bah.

I did actually just end up running through him and taking the damage in the end. Sure enough, yeah, he respawned. But by that point the spring was active and the old man gave me the ring, so I figured I had nothing to lose by fighting the monster this time. He'd kill me, of course, but at least I wouldn't have to go back inside.

...sure enough, I beat the crap out of him. >.<

Triple bah.

You will be thanking me when you realize it is the best game ever. (If I say this enough, someone is bound to agree with me, eventually.)

Man, I could have sworn that was the very first place I tried the wing boots. Turns out I used them on the nearly identical screen to the left, and then the screen on the right, but not the middle one. I hate invisible walls in games. Having to go screen to screen guessing with an expensive, short-timered, one-use item is not really intuitive, even for an NES game.

And Chicken, I know how you feel. The locked doors drive me mad. I try to keep two or three Jack keys with me at all times. I just got to that guy in the sky who tells you about the key, but the fountain erupted, covering the text... very helpful. Thankfully I've got your report of what to do.

A Most Editsome Edit: I just got through the Joker door and handle the boss easily. Those of you around this part of the game should really look into grinding and backtracking to the shop that sells the death spell. Killed the boss in two or three hits. Not only that, but in the process of grinding for it, I got to the Hero rank which starts me off with 5200 gold each time I die... pretty handy.

Hoooooly crap, the mist area is the most amazing thing I've ever seen from an NES game by far. So weird to see this after the horrendously ugly areas I've gotten used to from this game.

I agree with you.
Granted, i always did. AoL is filled of hyperawesome-osity goodness.

Ahem.

Meanwhile, I need to pick up Faxanadu (i just "demo'd" it using ... erm ... magic), and think i'll have to grab it once i have space-time in my game playing rotation.
Yes, my game playing habits are a fundamental aspect of space-time. You haven't played multiplayer until you've played it with an alternate time-line version of yourself.

Mine too. He totally sucks. Except in those times when i'm him and the other me is the better version of me. Then i suck. Wibbly wobbly timey-wimey ... stuff.

Even though I've beaten this game so many times, I made a fundamental mistake. I forgot to talk to the Joker Guri twice, and I forgot to go talk to the guri in town before proceeding, so I died to the dwarf on my way out and respawned with only 500 golds. I am dumb.

Well I'm up to the misty town now. Took longer than it should have though no thanks to some of this games annoying quirks.
I had to keep re buying the keys I used. I found out they are only good once. Sucks when you forget something and in order to go back to where you were you gotta go fetch another key. That's how games used to be in those days I guess. They had alot of unfair things about these old games. Like starting back at the first area with a tiny amount of life everytime you died in Zelda. Somehow we pressed on and loved our little Nes games anyway.

@Adam's most editsome edit: For those willing to spend the time grinding, this is definitely a good idea. However, be aware that the Death spell will be made available later at a much cheaper price. It's a hidden shop in the mist.

Edit: Another pointer for those struggling with the Dwarf in the Joker room. If you kill the 3 flying guys in the first screen to the right of the town, there is a high chance of obtaining the ointment.

I heard there's some sorta glitch in this game that makes the pendant item reduce your attack power rather than increasing it.
Is there any truth to this? Anyone know what I'm referring too?

I just came back in here to post about the Tower of Suffer. It contains the Pendant, which reduces your attack power.
Basically, the Pendant flag is reversed from what it should be. At the start of the game, you get the pendant bonus. When you get the pendant, the pendant bonus is removed.
It's actually best to skip the Tower of Suffer altogether.

Edit: I got to Dartmoor and wandered around a bit and decided to save the rest for tomorrow. If anyone needs any help I'll check up on this thread at around 3 P.M. CST.
Always remember that when you die you will respawn at the last guru you talked to, with a fixed amount of Gold depending on your title. This can come in very handy.

@ NotEnoughGolds
Well in that case since the pendant is going to make the game harder I'll be skipping it. Thanks for the warning.
I guess If you wanted a more challenging game it would be worth it. I better take it easy since It's my first time playing.

Wow, seriously?? What does this pendant look like? I have not been keeping track of my passwords, so if I accidentally get it, I'm going to be stuck with it.

I got to the town in the mist but forgot to visit the guru, so now I'm back in the town before that. Not exactly sure where to go in the mist area. I found a building with an enemy inside, but it's treated like a townhouse so you can't use weapons. I thought it was like those goofy houses in Zelda 2 where you can talk to a blob enemy or a sleeping bat, but no, he just killed me. How very pointless (though hilarious in retrospect).

Ugh, my least favorite part about Zelda, beating out even the Wizzrobe dungeon in 2nd Quest. If you'd just start off with full health, or even half health, it'd contend with Zelda 2 for best action game in my book.

I just got to the mist town (Mascon?) and there isn't a Guru there, which sucks. So I am too back at the previous town. Mascon has a pick axe there, so I reckon I might save up some coin, and backtrack to get the Death spell.

Keep forgetting to re-buy keys. That is one of the most annoying things about this game.

By the way, I kept on wondering why I was getting exp to the next level, but when I died, I went back to the previous level. I didnt realise that you had to speak to the guru first. Duh. Now I've got that figured out, and along with realising I hadn't been equipping my gear properly (why cant you equip stuff in town?) Double duh. Now it's starting to be more enjoyable.

I only found out about this Pendant while watching some youtube videos of the game. Just to get an idea where to go next.
There were all these comments on the videos about this pendant that reduces your attack power. They were saying it was some kind of programing error. It was meant to increase your attack power but it works in reverse. The tower of suffer is aparently an optional area that contains the pendant. I guess I'll be avoiding that place. Once I figure out where it is.

Adam, if you just reached Mascon, then you don't have the Pendant yet.
It looks like this: Untitled
The Tower of Suffer is east of Mascon, above the Guru.
There are 3 towers in the mist.
The first one has a clapper enemy (when he claps, the screen flashes and you take damage) on the very first screen. I believe there is an Elixir in this tower (I believe this is your last chance to obtain an Elixir), but nothing else of value, so not worth it imo.
The second tower is the Tower of Suffer. The Pendant is the only item in here.
The third tower is your way forward.

Wait... I just went back and bought the Dispel magic... HOW DO YOU USE MAGIC!?

NotEnoughGolds

Up+attack for magic, down+attack for items. Spell is called Deluge.

The Evil One has been vanquished.

I just arrived at Dartmoor town and I have a slight problem. I bought too many keys a while back and need to get rid of them. I need the space for more life potions. can I sell unwanted keys or do I have to go back and use them on the doors to get rid of them?
