Topic: Enhanced Super Mario Kart

I know it's against Nintendo's policy, but I'd love it if Nintendo enhanced this game in a few ways. I'm sure it would sell more if they did so, and judging from the XBLA titles, it should be simple to just add these enhancements:

Multiplayer: Four-player multiplayer is a must. Mario Kart with only two people was fun back then, but that was before we were introduced to the idea that four people can play at once.
Graphics: This game's framerate is not what I remembered. The framerate could use a boost, especially if we're playing with four people onscreen.

Pushing it a bit, here are some things I'd never expect, but would appreciate nonetheless:

Multiplayer: Online, non-split-screen. Use the same screen as the 1P Grand Prix and Time Trial modes.
Graphics: 480p, widescreen support.
Controls: Wii Wheel support - I don't even like the Wii Wheel, but it's a nifty feature that may sell the game.

Now, honestly, what would Nintendo sell more? Two-player Mario Kart that is the same exact thing many of us have on our SNESes or four-player Mario Kart with Wii Wheel support that doesn't even have to be played with four people or with the Wii Wheel if you don't want to?

If you put "Enhanced" on the end of any Mario Kart title, I can promise you at least one pre-order.

Exactly.

Instead of this being on the Virtual Console, if it was included as an unlockable bonus game within the next Mario Kart, this would be very possible.

All of this would ruin Super Mario Kart as we know it. Microsoft`s XBLA is nice in all but it feels like most of the games on there are remakes. Now Nintendo brings us the classics we all grew up with on a very wide range of variety.

but a lot of your claims are ridiculous like “Graphics: 480p, wisescreen support”- you do know this is a Super NES title right?

“Controls: Wii Wheel support” Haha get real!

And online multiplayer on a SNES game is a dream to never come true.
Super Mario Kart is awesome the way it is, it`s a classic and for it`s time it was a flawless racer.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize she was talking about SNES title specifically.

Yes, it would take LOADS of work to pull of something like that. And for that reason, it'll be a fantasy only. But you know what? I still like the idea, and am a little disappointed that we won't get it.

Will it happen? No, definitely not. Nintendo clearly has zero interest in this kind of stuff, and rightfully so. There isn't a huge demand, and releasing VC titles as they are clearly has satisfied many.

Should it happen? Personally, I don't think so. The game was designed from the very beginning as a one-on-one racer. Everything would have to be overhauled for it to be fun with more. I still find when I play this game to this day that it is perfect as-is for two-player. I wouldn't change a thing. The courses are great. The items are fair. The characters are balanced. The speed and graphics are just fine.

Of course, if Nintendo did release it "enhanced" for some reason, it wouldn't bother me. I can always not use those features if they turn out as poorly as I would think they would.

I'm just going by what Microsoft does with XBLA here, guys. If 4J Studios can pull this off (plus more) with both N64 Banjos within months, it isn't too hard for Nintendo.

"but a lot of your claims are ridiculous like “Graphics: 480p, wisescreen support”- you do know this is a Super NES title right?"
I've seen the original Galaga in high definition.

I don't like the Wii Wheel either, but are you telling me today's generation won't love this?

Works with emulators.

"Super Mario Kart is awesome the way it is, it`s a classic and for it`s time it was a flawless racer."
I totally agree, but would some extra options we don't have to use hurt?

I had a similar idea but it doesn't involve changing the SNES game.

Instead, it would be for the WiiWare and would be an expansion of sorts to Mario Kart Wii however it would only feature retro courses remade in the exact same way retro courses were remade for Mario Kart Wii.

The gameplay would be identical to Mario Kart Wii; although it would not be able to interact with Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart WiiWare would be designed as if it were an expansion pack - i.e. exact same menus and options. Mario Kart WiiWare would also read your Mario Kart Wii save data and you would have identical unlocked characters and vehicles you have in the main game.

I don't know how many courses Nintendo could fit on a single WiiWare download. I'm thinking four would be acceptable with additional cups as DLC. Is there a limit on how much DLC a game can have in terms of size?

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Adam

Well, why make them DLC at all? Why not make each four-course cup its own WiiWare title? Since they're treated as "expansions," there's no reason you should have to buy one cup before getting the others, I'd think. It would be cool if there were an SNES cup and an N64 cup, and then I could just get the SNES one since that's my favorite while others could do oppositely if they don't want both.
It's too bad Nintendo wouldn't do something like that. Then again, I didn't really care for MKWii.

Bass_X0

Well, I was thinking that all the Cups you have downloaded would be selectable on the same screen so in a mulitiplayer game, you could play on a course from one Cup and then the next from another. Plus, they would have to put the character and kart/bike data on each of the downloads which would be unnecessary if all DLC could access character and kart/bike data from the first downloaded software.

How about the first download be battle courses which would also contain the menu, online, character and kart/bike data on it and every Cup would be DLC (although unlike some other DLC, these wouldn't already be downloaded in the first download).

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

You want a medal or something? BTW if you haven`t noticed yet, Nintendo`s consoles don`t support HD so there goes your “Super Mario Kart HD”

“I hate the Wii Wheel too but are you telling me today`s generation won`t love this?”
Yes I am.

“but would some extra options we don`t have to use hurt?”

Yes! it is. It`d ruin the original experience we have all came to love. VC games are brought to us to be either played again from our favorite past gen consoles or for new comers to download and experience for the 1st time ever. Since they missed out on the game

If they are options you don't have to use them, so they can't hurt. I agree that I wouldn't want to play with those options and I too love the game as it is, but their very availability would not hurt anyone.

And while you and I clearly don't care for the Wii Wheel, there's no denying it and Mario Kart Wii were a success. Most people who have the game play with the wheel. It's mostly just past Gamecube owners (and even then, not all of us) who prefer traditional controls, and we have to face the sad fact that we aren't the primary consumers for Mario Kart and Nintendo games in general. I think newcomers to Super Mario Kart would dig the wheel. I would personally continue not using it, but I would probably be in the minority.

Oh, and he suggested 480p, not HD. The Galaga HD was just an example to say, if an early 80's arcade game can be redone in HD, there's no reason an SNES game can't be remade in 480p. I don't see why you need to be so sarcastic when it was painfully obvious what he was saying. Let's play nice.

Then again the kid can keep wishing for the dang remake in 480p, Online Multiplayer, and Wii Wheel capability since Nintendo wouldn`t do something so stupid to such a classic. Nintendo has no plans nor are there any rumors of doing this to any of Nintendo`s games which is by far a great idea not to do so.
By the way Adam I don`t hate the Wii wheel, actually it`s a pretty obvious/unique accessory for Wii racers.

Assuming that it's possible for argument's sake, I don't really want to play an enhanced version of Super Mario Kart, not even with online. But if Nintendo released the original version on VC as well as an enhanced one, then I'd have no problem with people enjoying the latter.

Adam

The very first post addressed that. This thread was just a big What If, speculation for fun. Nintendo clearly isn't going through all these efforts.

I personally don't care for the wheel. I have no problems rotating the Wii remote without the aid of plastic. Excite Truck controlled fine without it, but hey, to each his own. If in our fantasy world Nintendo added Wii wheel support to Super Mario Kart, I would welcome it just so everyone could play it as he wants, but I'd continue using my wonderful Classic Controller.

I'm just using the HD version as Galaga as an example. You don't have the be so rude about it... Also, I said 480p, something the Wii is very capable of doing.

"'I hate the Wii Wheel too but are you telling me today`s generation won`t love this?'
Yes I am."
You sure put up a good argument.

"Yes! it is. It`d ruin the original experience we have all came to love."
Which is why you ignore the extra options and play it without the enhancements. >>

I don't particularly care for a remake too much, I was just posting an nice example of what things would be like if Nintendo offered optional enhancements.

I'd play with the increased framerate, the four-player capability (I don't see why not), and maybe even online play if I had a reason to (this is one of the reasons people like XBLA releases). I know many gamers would enjoy online capabilities.

The 480p... I'm not too interested. It wouldn't make much of a difference, but I was going by what gamers on various forums seem to want. It just seems like a default feature for Wii games so I put it in. If people want to play with higher resolution graphics, they can use it.

Saying the optional enhancements would turn you off is like saying "Oh, that new Pokémon Snap... I heard that if you choose to, you can press the - Button on the Wii Remote to send pictures to the Photo Channel. I want my games to be played the way they were meant to be played!"

Wow, this thread sure got ugly. Especially when you consider that she already made it clear she was just hypothesizing.

Even hypothesizing, I can't come to grips as to whether or not enhancing VC games is a good idea. I guess online play would be nice, and that photo feature in Pokemon Snap was KINDA cool.

Realistically I rather Nintendo release more nostalgic remakes on WiiWare like Excitebike as well as VC versions. Everyone's happy, right?

How about Super Mario Kart 2? Uses a similar graphical style as the SNES tracks do in Mario Kart Wii (which should be possible on WiiWare) but plays more like SNES Super Mario Kart. New backgrounds. More characters.
