Topic: Actual retro controllers on the Wii

I imagine some of you already know about these sites, but for those who don't, I have found a couple of sites that sell adapters that let you use actual NES, SNES, N64, Genesis/Mega Drive and SMS controllers on the Wii. They adapters plug into the Gamecube controller ports on the Wii, and then you plug the controller into the adapter.

For NES and SNES adapters - www.retrousb.com

For N64, Genesis/MD and SMS - http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products.php?cmd=list&categor...

Enjoy!

Wow, I hadn't seen those before, that's awesome. Are all the buttons mapped correctly?

As far as I know they should be, but I haven't actually bought any yet.

Do you think it would be possible to use the Memory Pak and GB Pak for those N64 games on the VC that work with them?

I suppose now you can use the NES Zapper for Operation Wolf too.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

That's a good question Bass, I hope they work! I have always wanted to try the NES Zapper on Operation Wolf too. I doubt they took the time to actually remove the code of the game that allowed Zappers to work, it's probably just the fact that with the Wii controls there is no way to access it. Next time I get some spare cash I want to buy an adapter and try this out. The memory pak with N64 games may be more complicated though, dunno if that would work.

i wish Nintendo would just come out with a classic controller that had actual C-buttons, not the stupid C-analog stick like the Gamecube controller. i actually liked the C-buttons, i loved the N64 controller just the way it was, and playing N64 games without them/without the original controller (I'm looking at you, Ocarina of Time) is a pain in the rear.

i will definitely keep that website in mind when i've got the money to go controller shopping again, because I've still got my N64 controllers in storage (along with the system, lol). thanks for the link!

I didn't know that, definitely will check it out. Is it 100% legal?

It's not Nintendo endorsed, but there's nothing illegal about it.

Don't some N64 games use different button mappings on VC on the Classic Controller? If so, I would think that would reflect on the N64 controller.

Brooks83, you've just made my day! I've been looking for an N64 converter for a while! StarFox and Zelda just don't feel right when I have to use the C-Stick for everything.

@Adam - The different mappings don't matter as long as the N64 controller adapter supports the GameCube mappings correctly. This is because the adapter makes the N64 controller speak the GCN controller protocol.

I'm holding out hope that Nintendo's first yearly Platinum members' gift for the US will be the Super Famicom classic controller they gave out in Japan. http://blog.twilight-realm.com/?cat=8

Well for the N64 games having the button mapping being different game by game bases would make the N64 addaptor impratical as it most probably have the right stick mapped to the c-pad but unfortunally as games have diffently mapped buttons would make it arkward.

Sin & Punishment base the n64's analog stick mapped to both analog sticks meanwhile the left right of the c-pad mapped to the x-y buttons on the classic & gamecube controllers so for that particluar mapping most probably means that the n64 adaptor would likely to be useless.

I have no problem with the current classic controller & I would not trust these for quality.

P.s. In case you wondering Sin & Punishment doesn't use the up down on the c-pad.

Playing sin and punishment on vc with classic controller or gamecube controller is like trying to tame a rabid horse.

If you read the description for the adapter, it comes with 8 different mappings to resolve this issue.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for quality-wise. It's an extension cable that translates N64 comms to CGN comms. As long as it a) works, b) doesn't stop working (within reason), and c) doesn't require something wacky like an external power source that could overload Wii circuitry, I can't see quality being an issue.

(For the record, C is most definitely true. A has been reviewed by others to be true. B is an open issue with any third party product.)

Joystiq made mention of this adapter. It appears to work well enough.

The buttons are mapped correctly for SNES games on the SNES converter I got from retrousb. It works great with Pc Engine games too. I use it for nes games too, It´s ok but you use the B&A buttons as B&A... sounds good in theory, but actually Y&B would have felt more intuitive.

The SNES controller isn´t great for SEGA Megadrive games, but I doubt the "classic controller" is any better. Sometimes you get confused over the buttonlayout. Finally, for Neo Geo I think the buttons aren´t mapped correctly. I have no Neo Geo to compare with, but when Playing Samurai Shodown II I feel light and medium attacks seem to have shifted places.

Anyway, it´s a great (but a bit expensive) buy!

I didn't find it that bad. Star Fox was more difficult for me. though I found the GC pad worked best.

I'm glad someone else has said it, I thought I was just rubbish.

It could still be that you are rubbish. But it's okay. We'll still keep you around for laughs.

Yes. Unfortunately I lack the third arm necessary to play the game. The game demands you to strafe, shoot and jump all at the same time.

You'd have to be Zaphod Beeblebrox to do that!
